A nostalgic song. Words and music by Cobb & Edwards. Published by Gus Edwards Music Pub. Co., New York City.
sung by Sheet Music Singer, Fred Feild
piano according to the sheet music
tempo = 150 bpm, valse moderato
1. Nothing to do, Nellie Darling, nothing to do you say
Let's take a trip on memory's ship, back to the bygone days
Sail to the old village school house
Anchor outside the school door
Look in and see, there's you and there's me
A couple of kids once more
Chorus:
School days, school days, dear old golden rule days
Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic
Taught to the tune of a hickry stick
You were my queen in calico, I was your bashful barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, I love you Joe
When we were a couple of kids
2. 'Member the hill, Nellie Darling
And the oak tree that grew on it's brow?
They've built forty stories upon that old hill
And the oak's an old chestnut now
'Member the meadows so green dear
So fragrant with clover and maize
Into new city lots and preferred bus'ness plots
They've cut them up since those days

So glad I found this. My grandfather taught it to me in the late '60s when I was in 3rd grade. All I remembered was the chorus. When he was a young man & before he married he performed in vaudeville shows where he played saxophone in a band with his sister. He was also an end man in a minstrel troupe. This had to have been one of the songs he sang\played.

It is a very beautiful song. Both the lyrics and the melody of the song are very beautiful. I felt the smell of chalk while listening to the song. I can hear the sound of chalk writing on the blackboard. The chalk dust mixes with the air and soils our clothes.. The past time was beautiful.

Oh, another old favourite of mine. The first verse and chorus are so sentimental (if you disregard the hick'ry stick) but the second verse is GRIM AS HELL -- "They've paved paradise and put up a parking lot" circa 1907! Thanks for singing this.

Terrific! Thank you so much for posting this! One of those great old songs that people don't realize they can just spontaneously sing! That's true about the refrain, for sure! I looked it up because my plan is to learn the verses and bring it to local unaccompanied "pub sings", assuming that people will probably have no trouble joining in on the refrain . A real gem! (I'll let you know how it works!)

Back to report on two different performances. First, I brought it to an unaccompanied "pub sing" of about fifteen mostly 25-35 year olds, and only two people joined in. Those two were over 50. (I'm 63) Seems like the millennials don't know it! Last Saturday I performed it at the Sounding Board Coffeehouse in West Hartford, CT, to a house of about 100 predominantly over 55ers. They heartily joined in on the chorus, and it was a great success! This leaves me somewhat perplexed. If the song is from 1907, why would it still be around for people who grew up in the 1950s, but not be around for their children? Does anybody know if it was ever a hit in the mid 1900s, or perhaps it was a radio show theme song ...... or whatever. People my age (63) learned it from their parents, but where did THEY learn it? 1907 was a long time ago!

If it makes you feel any better- it's my daughter's favorite song and she is 3 years old. I find the song interesting in its anti-development message and mention of the "hickory stick!"-- in other words, teachers hitting kids. Crazy.
@mikelisacarb
@mikelisacarb 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, the phrase is ... "Taught to the tune of a hickory stick", referring to the practice of a teacher's banging out a rhythm with a stick while the students recited the lessons. It really doesn't have anything to do with students getting hit with that stick.

Actually I current sing a corrupted version of the refrain: "school days, reading and writing, and rithmatic: taught to the tune of a hickory stick". The awfulness of my tone deaf singing & the words are useful for getting my son out of bed for school. I just wish that there were more useful words in the song about "school days"...
