School district bans books on Rosa Parks and Malala. Now students want answers

Students in a southern Pennsylvania school district are battling the latest example of panic spreading over how history and race are taught in schools across the US.
"I don't think a moral compass will let you ban books about equality and loving each other," Central York High School senior Christina Ellis told CNN.
Ellis is among the students protesting a book ban in York, Pennsylvania, and questions whether the officials who decided to remove certain reading materials from the curriculum even read the resources they deem controversial. She was joined by other teens protesting in front of Central York High School this week.
On Monday, students, parents and other community members debated during a virtual school board meeting about the list of anti-racism books and resources that were banned from the curriculum by the Central York school board last year.
Last October, the all-White school board unanimously banned a list of educational resources that included a children's book about Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai's autobiography and CNN's Sesame Street town hall on racism. CNN's Evan McMorris-Santoro reports.

My high school assigned Malala’s biography to all students as summer reading… I guess I should go protest against my school district for indoctrinating us with “bad ideas” such as valuing our education, or even worse, exposing us innocent children to the reality that not all children have an opportunity to obtain an education! Most countries have done evil, at some point, like the English starving the Irish. The Germans, murdering the Jewish people and others. Children must learn about these horrors, and especially the subtle changes that happened just before hand. Those who know, can see that we are heading down a terrible path at the moment. It is not the people, but what they are lead to believe. We must support free speech, critical thinking and respect for individual creativity. Seeing how many teenagers spoke up after Parkland was amazing. In my own town we had teens set up an entire BLM march, working with our politicians and townspeople to organize it. Currently we are having serious issues with the lack of school bus drivers, over crowding on buses and the district putting middle and highschool kids on the same buses which just increased the problem. While parents sat and bitched on Facebook, it’s the teens who took action and began writing and reaching out to the superintendent for change. I am sure young adults will change our future and I will stand behind them and support it.

The ridiculous thing is that Hidden Figures is inspirational for anyone who is not from a rich background, because it teaches that, so long as you have skill and determination, you can achieve anything - regardless of your race or gender. Unless the board of this school district (& the parents that support them) are modern day Vanderbilts, then this ban takes inspiration away from *their* children, as well as children of colour. The telling part, though, was when they said they wanted to "freeze" usage until they could review the books and, in a year, they still haven't done it. That's either admitting blatant racism or that they can't read... (or possibly both...) 🤦‍♀️

I am a 75 yr old black caribbean woman. My dad had us reading Readers Digest condensed version at 10 years old. Taught us kids fractions, decimals, multiplication, additions, subtraction, devision, before it was taught in school. He didn't sit and wait on the school system. Buy the book and have your kid read it. Pass it on when the kid is done. Talk about it witj your friends. Come on my people. Do it for yourself and the kids. Please do not tell me you do not have the time. Form little groups, less than six kids in a basement or backyard. Do something. Stop wasting time and energy with the so called educators.

As a 62 year old white male Canadian who was taught in a Canadian school about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King amongst other heroic figures of the civil rights movement in the USA, I am absolutely stunned that a Penn State school district can get away with this!!! Not teaching history, accurately, doesn't make that history go away, it only increases ignorance and increases the threat of repeating terrible mistakes. Case in point, the wholesale slaughter of an afluent black community in Tulsa Oklahoma in the 1920's was not errased dispite the best attempts of whites in Oklahoma. The 100th anniversary of that terrible event came roaring back both nationally and around the world this year. A Nazi-style book-banning will not stop history but rather only delay the eventuality of historical existance to the masses.
