My autistic 6 year old son was injured at school by another boy but the school (and his injuries) said a different story. This isn't what this vlog was supposed to be about but I feel like it's important to talk about how scary public special education can be for a lot of us. We are thankful Lex could tell us kind of what happened but if it had been our nonspeaking 3 and 4 year olds, we would've never known and that is heart wrenching and terrifying.

I am not upset he was pushed down. I am not even upset that it happened when the para was looking away for a few minutes helping another child. What I AM upset about is the para said he tripped when she had no idea what happened. Lex didn't tell them he tripped. She literally guessed what happened, put that on an incident report, and is what was told to us as fact. I think ANY parent would be concerned if their child had a concussion, HUGE bump on their forehead, what appears to be a black SWOLLEN eye and their child is telling them something completely different from the school. I am not upset with the teacher and I know NO ONE can watch a child 24/7 but honesty and transparency is expected, and is what SHOULD happen. I am so glad Lex is okay now and I really hope the para learned from this experience.

You should know that a teacher can be fired and loose her license if a child had and accident during class ! Sometimes kids with autism kick , bite , pull the teacher’s hair and they can’t say anything. Is not easy to take care kids with special needs ! Also a lot of parents are alwyas y threatening to sue the school for any reason .

I'm 20 years old, and not only I am a huge fan of your videos, but I'm also autistic. I don't let it affect me as a person, it's interesting that my life was changed after I found out that I was autistic, I do a lot of stuff with my local Special Olympics program where I live, it's changed my life, when I started watching your videos, it made me feel good inside that you tell your story of being in a family with autistic children. It's also frustrating to hear about this, I was bullied at school at a younger age, but I had help and a really good teacher and friends to help me through it.

You are totally correct. They were probably worried you'd sure them for negligence if they spoke the truth. There was an element of guilt behind their lying. As a teacher of preschool, I've had to phone parents and tell them their child is injured. It's never easy. But I'd never lie about it.

I think you did a really good job of responding to this and not letting emotions overwhelm logical thinking. Definitely important to figure out what happened and create a plan for it in the future but considering that what you were told had gone through four people who didn’t know what really happened in the first place, I can understand why you were told what you were told. I’m glad that you were able to speak up and request more transparency in the future and that they understood where they were wrong in making an assumption and stating that as fact. I hope Lex is all back to his normal self now and feeling great! Sending you lots of positive vibes ! ❤️

My intention behind this channel is to advocate and inform, I am learning and growing on how to do that while still respecting my kids privacy. Im ALWAYS open to constructive criticism and ideas. Being rude, degrading and overall ugly isn’t the way there. I am hardly making ANY money from this channel which I’m okay with. I continued this channel not because I was looking to be the next “up and coming” but to help other parents, professionals, and disabled adults. I feel you frustrated though. My daughter is 13 and has ADHD. I've had issues with the public school for years now. Today she had her first day of cyber charter school and the best experience in school in years. On top of that they reached out to me to welcome us and explain things. They will keep in contact at least monthly. Sometimes a change needs to happen. Best of luck mama!

Sometimes kids don’t understand what happened. To them they were pushed but the reality can be different. I am a teacher and had an incident a couple of weeks ago with a mama telling me that her daughter told her someone pushed her when they were coming in from the playground. Luckily I saw this incident and what happened was another student tripped and fell into the student in front of them. So technically yes, they were pushed but not maliciously. This other child is a chronic tattler and she did tell me and I explained to her that the other student just tripped. She still went home and told her mom someone pushed her. It’s important to listen to your kids but it’s also important to remember they are usually only telling you half of the story. Especially when they are 5 and 6.

This has been my life, thank you for sharing. I have two verbal ASD+ADHD kiddos and have fought a school to remove a principal (head of school, not sure what you guys call that) due to child endangerment. My son from that school is 9.5 and it took 3 years to get him back into full time school and start easing his supervision on the yard. My older son hasn't needed that kind of supervision but I have had plenty of battles for him too, especially when he was 5/6/7 years old.

The boy said blocks fell and hit her. Story I got was boy's version. Kaitlyn was verbal, so I questioned it. It hit the corner of her eye leaving a mark so I took her in to get her checked out and injury documented. Dr. actually said boy's story couldn't have happened. So off to the school I went. They tried to dismiss me until I was going to pull Kaitlyn out. Then I got an apology and the truth, and a promise that they would be honest in the future.

I then asked them if that happens a lot? Which they ignored so I let principal and teacher know how pissed I was that TA did not intervene with the other boy… Unfortunately TAs will know I am supervising and watching in a class room so I am sure I won’t catch any of them off guard not doing their job… I was a TA at a school and know it only takes seconds for another kid to get hurt but I def don’t like when they are distracted by phones or talking to eachother… like I said being a TA myself I saw alot of that….

Teachers job is to teach not to take care kids. People are confuse about teacher roles . Too many parents see school as babysitting center . I work with kids with disabilities but for private families and is like taking care babies . You can’t leave them alone , they alwyas surprise you . Now working in a school with 15-20 kids per class is crazy , is very stressful. Ian to. Easy to handle too many kids plus they kick you , bite you , pull your hair or any kind of agresiva behavior could happen. As teacher they have to deal with it . Now not every teacher is prepared to take care kids with special needs . They need a another certification. That’s more investment. Parents demand too much but teacher don’t make enough money to survive . If parents want a good service for their kids they should look for private school or have private teachers who will work 1 to 1 ! Or parents can stay home and teach their kids . I know few parents who el that and works great if you live your kid

When my daughter was 3 the school called me and said that my daughter broke her glasses. They said that she took her glasses off and broke them with her hands. I KNEW that was NOT true. I asked if she fell. She has an issue where the reflex in which we throw our are hands out to protect ourselves during a fall is a inconsistent. So, at that time especially, if she fell she was likely to fall right on her face without putting her hands out to protect herself. Anyway, they were adamant that she did not fall and she just took her glasses off and broke them. When I picked her up at the end of the day, she had a cut on the side of her face near her eye....right where the hinge of the glasses would go if she fell on her face. It wasn't a huge cut or a deep cut but it was definitely visible. I saw it right away. I immediately pointed out that she obviously fell on her face and her glasses cut her. They finally admitted that they didn't see her fall. Which I was fine with...they can't see everything. I am an educational aide myself with many years of experience. I realize things happen. I just upset that they were adamant that she just took her glasses off and broke them and insisted that she did not fall. Thankfully she wasn't more injured than that little cut. In reality she fell on her face. They did not see it. The first thing they saw was my daughter with her broken glasses in her hand and they assumed that she took them off of her face and just broke them. Mind you this would have been a COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER behavior for her (Not to mention that her glasses were bent to such a degree and at such an angle that a 3 year old would not be able to just bend them into that shape, it would be a difficult for an adult to just bend them into that shape) A fall made much more sense. But instead of saying her glasses are broken and we aren't sure what happened and she doesn't appear injured. They went with the unlikely "she took her glasses off and broke them". I know they can't see everything..but I know some scenarios are highly unlikely and when you didn't see what happened you have to use clues to figure out as much as you can. And for goodness sake say "we didn't see it but we think she fell on her face". or "we didn't see it but we think he (Lex) tripped".

Transparancy is like my #1, disabled child or not. How can you teach children to be honest, if adults don't do the same. It always go better when you say "I don't know, but let's see if we/I can't get the correct answer!" I too often think about the disabled children/adults who cannot advocate or speak for themselves and often fight for them, even if I get frustated in the end. You can only take so much though.

I been thru this so I can relate.. my child was slammed to the floor causing seizures and the school denied it. Board pulled videos and they don't lie.. she was assaulted by a teacher and her arm pulled out of socket and had to get the er put it back.. and then the ambulance had to come bcus someone slammed her face into a table and it was busted up. Being non verbal was a big issue. I hope all gets resolved.

Absolute guess but I imagine people do that with their stickers on the pole in solidarity. Even if the parking lot is empty, you can look at that pole & know you’re not alone, everyone’s family has it’s own medical issues & traumas. Edit: I wrote that before you told me about Lex’s concussion. I’m so sorry your trauma with schools was triggered again & I completely understand your reactions. If they had cameras that caught what happened, why didn’t they watch the footage to clarify what happened before just making something up for an incident report? I definitely agree with you about he whole transparency thing. If you didn’t actually see what happened, then say that, don’t just make something up.

Also they just didn't acknowledge that she had autism. They just pissed me off and it was other things besides this but I just never sent her back . Schools are notorious for covering their own (excuse my French) asses with incidences at school. It’s very bad because kids are getting hurt and teachers and adults turn a blind eye when kids (especially ones with special needs) to kids either falling due to being clumsy or kids actually being mean.) I think schools should be trained to handle kiddos who are special needs. I would def go to the school board if it’s not addressed or solved properly.

He doesn't. I saw the footage and even had an aid been right by him, she wouldn't have been able to stop what happened. It wasn't malicious. @@OurLANDingCrew8 That`s good to hear. Small children will get hurt sometimes when they are playing and there`s no way to prevent it but they can definitely work on their communication. I was super pissed when my son`s kindergarten teacher told me he got into a fight and kicked another child and completely lost it when he got kicked back - and once we were home I saw a blue bite mark bruise on his leg. They shouldn`t assume if they weren`t there to see it. Poor Lex, I hope he feels better soon.

@monsterman: Sawyer loves to spin all the time usually standing up. For safety reasons,his PT got him one for the floor. It's like the old sit&spin toy that had a circle handle that came up thru the center&allowed the child to change direction and spinning speed. This one has no handle thru the center. His love of constant spinning is a stim from being autistic.

@Danielle Fedak: As a high school math teacher for almost 30years, WE DO NOT GET SUMMERS OFF. I get very offended when people say that. We have workshops to attend,continuing education classes @ college to keep our certification current, with papers to write,tests&group projects. We are usually only teach one class we did the previous year&are assigned to new ones. You spend time starting new lesson plans loosely based on the counties time table. Finding worksheets, making quizzes,tests&daily review questions, learning a new grading system on the computer, learning how to teach certain things using technology that's often easier by hand, games like Jeopardy as a test review game. Weekends except for church, I finish grading papers for 150 students which I started Saturday before 4pm so we can have a nice dinner, time to do something together-ex.board game night, shower,have all bags by door ready to go,lunches made for next day minus water bottle&sandwich in the fridge,read&bed between 9:30-10pm. I carpool with another person to work. Due to traffic and a school quite far away from our homes we leave @3:45am to get to school by 5:30am. I have quiet time to prepare,Xerox worksheets,have students get help,make up tests or quizzes. Double check with Dept chair for any updates or extra class coverage for a teammate who doesn't have a sub. I love teaching and the kids. I'm tired of all the technology they have to show on the state exam,loseing our ability to teach at times creatively so the kids remember&learn an alternative way especially for some of my main stream&weaker students,less parent support. Unless we see some big changes with the county math dept&our administration taking our suggestions for change&equal fairness there will be many people retiring or leaving in 2023. We haven't had any type of raises-pay,cost of living,benefits etc in almost 3yrs which in the past happens yearly. We don't get paid in the summer for all we do. If you choose when hired to have our paycheck(pd biweekly) stretched out so you get checks during the summer months. Teaching like nursing is a special calling! It's not a regular 9am-5pm M-F job with June,July&August as vacation.
@charleigh3275
@charleigh3275 2 жыл бұрын
@Danielle Fedak: In our county all schools have teachers rotate 1 day per week-a morning or afternoon AND 1 day during one of 3 lunch periods to cover an assigned area to monitor the students with school security officers&administration circulating during their grades lunch period&they split to cover am or pm&Security officers with a few county police officers cover both am&pm duty stations. This applied for Elementary,Middle&High Schools. We are the largest county in the state with a large diverse population, different&mixed socio-economic backgrounds, almost all speak 2 or more languages fluently. I can't believe preschools&day care don't have teachers,assistants,paraeducators and administrators on a rotating basis supervrsing the playground at recess&dismissal. Different schools(especially preschools) usually have different ways,during different seasons of supervising the kids for the 10-15 minutes before their classroom programs start. It is illegal NOT to have enough people supervising kids @all times.
