The brand new Schrade Froe (SCHF64) was designed by Chris Tanner from Prepared Mind 101 as a full tang fire prep and wood processing tool so you don't have to baton your knife when building a fire, My only complaint is it is almost impossible to do a decent balance test. Because it is "pointless" ;-) Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Looking at the comments, I think some don't understand the use of a Froe. It was designed in the old world days to split wood for wooden shingles. Chris designed this tool to split firewood. It is much thicker and a higher grind to split wood and save a knife blade that you my need to save your life. Not a bad idea I think. Great video Bryan, thanks.

One of my pet peeves is large knives with small for size 4.5 to 5 inch handles.. I'm glad Chris addressed this ergonomic design flaw inherent in many high dollar choppers / battening blades.. If the blades over 8.5 inches it should have at least a 6 inch handle so that you can choke up or down to dramatically change the area where the sweet spot occurs or to choke way up and get maximum control of the blade for fine detail work.. Those with belt sanders can use this to make a wicked reverse tanto.

So I just came from the channel of the guy who designed this tool and saw in the comments that one guy asked him to do more than knife reviews. His reply was "the reason preppers don't need to do the survival situation circle(explicit deleted) is because we aren't dumb(explicit deleted)s who will ever end up in a survival situation. I never unsubscribed from a channel faster in my life. Actually started a rash of unsubbing from all channels that have "survival" or "prepared" in the name that only do knife reviews. I like reviews to a degree but I'm glad you still do some skills on your channel.

In addition to guilt free, consequence free batonning of firewood, I have been glad to have it when I buy a tray of steaks and freeze them all before individually wrapping them. If they are all frozen together, rather than risk a chef's knife or meat cleaver, I line up the froe where they are frozen, whack it a few times, and voila! Pops right apart!

Before you were born, there was a pre-code movie, The Hatchet Man, staring Edgar G. Robinson. Watch it. Cleavers were routinely used as non firearm weapons. I have three cleavers, one of which is nearly identical to the Schrade model. If you have the skills (and most people do not and will never seek out professional, paid instruction), the Schrade product would make an excellent defensive weapon. In related considerations, do you know what is the favorite weapon among the homeless? It is a discarded flat edge screwdriver sharpened on a concrete sidewalk. I keep one in the driver door in the car - no one burglarizing the car would ever steal it.

I just ran across this for the first time. I'm 72 and grew up using a froe. I think as a large chopper it might be good but without the eye,which is were you get the leverage to split wood quickly it's a bust..
@RobertReno1
@RobertReno1 5 жыл бұрын
Nice video! However...two pretty major design flaws, though. 1.) Safety issue. Hand is too close to where you are beating the blade. A "normal" froe handle keeps your hands well away from the blade you are striking; 2.) Hardly no torque power. What's nice about a normal froe handle is the ability to twist it and provide plenty of torque to either split your wood more easily or free up a pinched blade in the wood. Normal froes have a much longer blade too. This is especially useful when processing larger pieces of wood. Froes are also known to be good tools to make shingles with. This tool could possibly be used to make shingles for shelters to provide better barriers against poor weather. I've seen froes process out entire logs. A froe can also be broke down into two pieces and fit pretty well into a pack/bag. What Chris Tanner designed is nothing more than a medium-size knife with a flat tip. This "knife" could never process a big log the way a normal froe could. My pack knife could do just as good of job as Tanners' design. I would never ever buy one of these. Sorry.

Good review. Personally I don't see the value of owning a Froe but I can see how some people may find a use for it. I like how you give a good natured ribbing to the well over six and a half billion of us who have seen the light and adopted the metric system. I work in the trades so I use imperial a lot at work, use pounds to measure weights and yards to describe distance when shooting a bow but I use meters to describe distance when shooting a rifle and kilometres for navigation. I'm a weird hybrid between the two systems.

It's another tool, it either does the job required of it or it stays in the tool box till it's needed (or at the store). I've never used a froe so don't know it's merits as one. I could imagine some of the base camp/cabin people looking into this, it can obviously split wood and in some situations would be lighter and take less pack space than hatchets and axes. An interesting thing to review.

Yo yo yo, froe bro! 😋 Ths thing really breaks wood apart like some kinda crazy magical sawsword. No kidding, I could see myself using that to make planks for my roof... Now, this thing is nice and basic and super budget-friendly, but for me, a guy that doesn't own _any_ woodcraft/bushcraft/outdoors knives, it's a bit too pigeonholed. I think I'm gonna save up further and buy myself a Jess-X for the sheer versatility it offers (plus the design pleases me greatly), you know, keep starter options on several points instead of limiting myself to batoning and what I could improvise with this froe. Do you have any thoughts on that, Bryan my man? I'd legit appreciate some input.

Yeah, the tip of the blade I think should at least have an edge so you could use it vertically for shaving down wood bark or taking off knots, or maybe a little carving. For splitting wood it does a good job, but I think more knives should have a shaved and sharpened spine to strike a ferro rod. It's like peanut butter without jelly.

for a tool designed specifically for fire prep, there's no excuse for it not being able to throw wicked sparks and shave feathers well. Those are crutial steps in the fire prep process. Otherwise what's the point of bringing this tool? It doesn't do anything my Bark River Bravo 1 can't do.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 7 жыл бұрын
Again, it is not designed to replace a knife. Just to be a tool you can pound on to split wood safely. A lot of people don't want to baton with their $200 knife. And, just to be honest, you could beat this through a larger diameter piece of wood that the Bravo 1- which is a really great knife, by the way.

joseph melchor who says anything about being tatical? It's marketed as a fire prep tool, yet it doesn't wood shavings well and it has a hard time throwing sparks to get your tinder ignited. The only thing it's good at is batonning, so it's only batting one out of three. Pretty awful I'd say. You're better off with a $20 Mora.

Charles Le I was joking. i don't see a need for it either. it's just redundant, theres plenty of tools similar to it that serve more than one purpose. You don't have to sub it for a 200$ dollar knife either, carry a knife cheaper that'll do everything you need just as well if not better.

I can see this being useful at the backyard fire pit or base camp. If it had a squared off section of spine for the ferro rod, and maybe a Tanto-style point, it would be more useful. Sharpen up the edge real good and it could make better shavings. So with some mods, this might replace a 'hawk or hatchet in camp. Of course, people have ben making their own with old lawnmower blades for decades. If you want to DIY...

My vote on this product: Pointless. A tool for splitting wood / processing fire wood? Isn't that what an axe is for? Opinions may vary, but in the realm of limited space and weight - I've got no room for something like this... On the link prepared mind 101 states "not a knife / not a survival tool". Again... I still can't see the value in this. Carry on.

I think the object is to get a well made inexpensive durable tool to use for basic camp tasks-set up, wood prep, fire prep, food prep, etc. Yeah, it's possible to use a knife that is a lot more expensive and a lot more of a hit in the heart when it's damaged or lost. This runs for around $30 bones and is something that you can hang on your ruck and use being assured that it is big enough and tough enough to do the job. Something that you can't do with a Mora or you would want to do. I like it too, and am getting one. Is it a #1 knife? No. But it is a function-able tool.
@10191927
@10191927 7 жыл бұрын
Rockford Beretta - I think what it's missing in my opinion is that the front of the blade isn't sharpened, because you could use the tool vertically and actually split large wood. I get what it's engineered for, but I agree it kind of misses the mark at the same time. I can understand where having multiple knives for specific tasks is needed, but you could still use a knife as a knife if you needed to. I just kind of ask myself, if this isn't a bushcraft knife, it's not an axe, it just splits wood, why do I need this?
@rockfordberetta8414
@rockfordberetta8414 7 жыл бұрын
The object is to re-invent the wheel and create a need for something needless. It's a cash grab. Justifying buying one by the logic of it being inexpensive is not really a good route to take. By that logic, people would go off into the woods carrying all sorts of half functional nonsense. It's not about price - It's redundant, less useful than a blade with a point, or an axe. Something you can't do with a Mora?...ok... but it's something you CAN do with an axe. Along with many other things, far more efficiently. It's a waste of money. Worse yet, a waste of weight and space in your pack.

@@rockfordberetta8414 I would just point out that isn't exactly a reinvention but rather just a current take on some really old tools. see traditional Froe with a 90 degree handle or a Japanese Bamboo Froe which looks a lot like this. As to how you would use this...I guess it depends on the person if they can find use for it in their system or not.

From a hunters stand point: I like it. It is useful for around the camp tasks, including snapping bones on my kills. For the price point, you cant turn this down. Also, this can be seen as a blank canvas for those who are good at re profiling its tip. Tanto? Maybe....

The froe is designed to make roofing shingles from rounds., pieces about 15 to 18 inches tall and a foot thick or so. There is a good video of ones use called "Making roof shingles with hand tools". The handle should be 90 degrees off from the blade so it can be used to pry the wood apart. I guess you can design one the way schrade did, but its not historically correct.

A traditional froe has a handle which gives leverage for splitting. Only thing that I see at first glance that doesn't excite.

Yep, this is not a traditional froe but it does what it is designed for very well.

don't wanna debate because i respect anybody else' opinions. i think it's ok. not sure i would personally buy it, but it looks ok. i just use a hatchet and i use a hatchet for even shavings. in fact, i seriously doubt i would ever part from using a hatchet, but this item is ok IMO. i like looking at new stuff. i might give an opinion, but it's not meant to suggest anybody else should feel the same way i do. thx4vid - i thumbed it up!

I have an indirect heat smoker. I use pecan and fruit woods, like apple to smoke my ribs. I also like to mix in a little hickory. All hickory is too much smoke flavor for me. I need one of these to split my wood! Love your channel as I have said before. Don't like all the "experts" that comment and think they need to correct everything you say! Keep up the great videos.

What? No tip test???(Look again at the knife..) Wrong question. Why should I carry the Froe where I could use an ax. And I can throw an ax. And a huge curve blade like a traditional Parang could do the job, and some ability for simple bushcrafting, while this is a one use only tool.
