The Schrade SCAXE9 Axe is a combination Hunter's size axe with a 12.5" folding saw in the handle. It is a great idea but how well does it actually work? Take a look and find out in this video.

Been feeling rather bad as of late , got my fishing equipment out and put new braided lines of different test , 100lbs on my #6 penn , I'm using for catfishing, 65 for 309s and 209s , put 25 on my ice fishing gear, ill use here at home in mountain streams , got new edges on knives , hachets , axes , time to get my noise makes out and check for rust . Thinking about getting a 6 inch slide for my old 45 and order a 460rowland barrel and compensator for it . Be able to run 45s 45 super , 460rowland. So I'll be ready when I feel better

I wish I'd seen this before I bought all I got , it would work well in a hunting bag , sometimes just need both for butchering wild hogs and deer , out in the field. But I use to quarter them up with a sharp hachet and large case pocket knife

My preferred tool for batonning. Lol. I really enjoy this axe/saw combo. It saves so much trouble. Between it and my SCHF52 & Mora, I’m good for camp or survival.

I agree, I would never carry an axe on my belt, a tomahawk or hatchet sure, those are much smaller and lighter but I still wish they would use a system on their sheaths to attach the axe to the outside of a backpack or rucksack. I use a Gator combo axe/knife, but would gladly take that SCAXE9 Combo also mounted to my pack. I like the idea of a saw blade in the handle. You cover 2 needs with 1 combo tool.

I was impressed when I saw the Schrade 2015 products and immediately ordered this Axe. Unfortunately after chopping down about 10 dead Arbutus trees (I live in western Canada), within a two week period of ownership, the head broke off right where it meets the handle. I found it vibrated quite a bit when chopping also. Great idea, the head & saw were nice and sharp but the handle's composition needs better design for impact resistance. I requested a refund, not a replacement. Thanks for reviewing, I hope it servers you better than it did I. Cheers!

Thanks for your honesty and response. I used to love Schrade until I bought the Bolo and the handle broke a 1/2 inch into the handle right out of the box. I thought I probably just got a defect but when I contacted Schrade to tell them what happened, they basically told me I was out of luck. That said, I haven't had issues with the other gear I have. Unfortunate because I'll never buy anything from Taylor Brands for their lack of customer service. Thanks again Brian.

I was really impressed with my new schf36. I took it to my father in laws house, he had some small bushes or should I say small trees about as thick, maybe a tad thicker then the wood you was chopping and I cut most of them down had a few that I got most of the way through, but that was because they were growing between the chain link fence, the knife did really well and still had a razer sharp edge on it

I hadn't thought about using the hammer end as a battoning surface. That makes a lot of sense, particularly in those situations such as you described. I wonder if gripping the saw around the axe part (with the sheath) on would provide more balance and keep that weight under control. In the end, this may be the axe for me.

Don't like this tool at all... sort of reminds me why the combo knife/back scratcher never caught on lol. In my early twenties a wise old friend asked if I would help harvest some firewood. "Sure", I replied. I really didn't have any experience but how complicated could it be? About 5 minutes in he stopped me and offered some of the best axe safety advise that was ever yelled to me (in a nice, comforting sort of way). He said, "Always swing the axe as if you were trying to drive the head into the ground if it passes through the target". Yup, it requires more bending and some not so cool looking stances (like your trying to pas a turd) but your lower parts are worth it. Another excellent video Bryan!

Bryan, Well I admit that I was at first kinda sceptical as "one tool" options like this usually as you said wind up being classified as a trade off (compromise) But, the axe sure appeared to bite very deep, and the saw seemed to work great in the straight out position....with the "L" shape position being resevred for upright limbing. Splitting (batoning) and ferro rod work all seemed to also go very well. Like anything of this nature, it would simply require a little time to get used to it when using the saw with the counter weight of the axe head at the rear. But all in all, I'm rather impressed. I would in the long run, do something about that sheath. Probably as Swissarmyzippo said, a kydex sheath, which would be the icing on the cake here. The long term useage will be the true test of course....but all in all...at present, I would give it four stars as a truck & base camp tool. Higher with a new sheath. Not bad at all. Love Schrade Saturdays. Thanks Bryan for another honest straight up review! Stay well.

I just came across this axe on sale here in Alberta Canada for $40 CAD (= $30.40USD). It looks like to me that the axe is quite good indeed and the saw seems to be a good backup choice in case one's main saw breaks or goes missing, or forgotten (do I forget things? naaaa). At that price, if you needed an axe this size, would you still recommend it? You don't have to send me your's because it would probably cost $30USD to ship it to me.

Not only is the axe design stolen from Fiskars but also the concept of having a saw in the axe from Gerber (which are part of Fiskars Group). Not the first thing Schrade copied, I like brands with OWN original ideas better ! (That does not mean Schrade products are bad, just sayin) Sorry, but that "test" was silly, you could atleast chop more than twice on a bigger log or something,
@hathlet
@hathlet 9 жыл бұрын
***** Fiskars are great MODERN axes for the price, you can not go wrong with them. But it is pretty obvious that the schrade axe head design in combination with a "glasfiber plastic" handle was not their idea (I am pretty sure Fiskars were the first who used that). People just hating the Fiskars axes because they like wooden handles better in most cases.

***** No, it was for Hercules. I was referring to his point about liking brands with their own original ideas. Just poking a little, no harm intended. For the record, I have absolutely nothing against Fiskars. In fact, I would like to review some of their stuff. I just don't necessarily agree that Schrade copied them on this. I think they saw a concept that sounded good and put their own interpretation of am Axe/saw combo.

To all the nay sayers. I bet you wouldn't complain if that's all you had in a survival situation. I think the angled position would be better used at shoulder or over the head use. As far as some of the over priced axes, you can drive a Cadillac or an old beater you still git to the same place. I have compared the Schràde to a wetterling and the Schrader performed! better. The Schrader seem to bite very well and I only paid 1/3 the price. Brian I love yer Chanel and I look quite often to see if you have another video published. Keep up the good work.

This review does not put the tool or the presenter in the best way. You were not prepared, too excited and perhaps too cold. Lots of practice required before demonstrating the pros and cons so you are comfortable with the tool. You dont have a chopping block? Well get one. You are also easily distracted by a little piece of bark. The banter does not help me however, I am intrigue with the concept and will look for one the next time I pass by a Pro Bass shop but it is not because of the video.
