AUS8 and AUS10 seem to be under rated, by and large, as material for stuff like camp knives. I keep seeing them tested with surprisingly good results.

@warthog11966 I think it's a little like D2- at some point someone was putting out poorly heat treated AUS8.

I still have my SCHF52 in micarta scales which was basically the same knife. It had those early terrible nylon sheaths but at least it was 1095. It doesn't seem much use these days but it still is a great budget chopper.

I've had the SCHF52 for years and it's still a great knife. Nylon sheath sucks but the knife is good. Glad they have the plastic sheath now.

I can clear the "more viewers for budget knife videos" mystery up for you, at least for me. I'm more interested in seeing the "budget" range blade reviews because I want to know what works that I can afford and that I'm actually going to use. Simple as that. I replied to someone on the last video who mentioned they had some old Schrades and still use them that I have several and I use them all the time too. And I mean literally every day. I almost always have one in my pocket and I use it. I have more expensive knives, a few of them actually and some of them are custom, and they sit in their boxes and rarely come out because I don't have any daily use for them. You mentioned "not a KZfaqr busting through sections of telephone poles" and with that you nailed it. Most of us cut string, open boxes, cut tape, open overly packaged and plastic wrapped things with our knives. I have two knives I take camping, an SCHF13 I wear on my belt and an SCHF10 I keep in my fire kit. I use them and they're absolutely perfect for what I do with knives. And if one of them breaks.. oh well. It was my fault and I have another one of each back home waiting to pull out and start using because I bought two of each because I could afford two. It's been nearly ten years, I haven't broken one yet, so I still have two of each. I love my expensive knives, I wear then I get the urge to pull one out. Anyway, thanks for the reviews of the new line of Schrades. Of course some are going to be winners and some aren't, that's true for any brand. But it's good to see them in action so we can decide for ourselves.

It's a new version of the SCHF52 but with overmolded handle, stainless steel and what looks like a thinner blade stock. I like AUS8 in general but more even for tough use. It is more likely to bend than break and that's great for an 'impact' tool. The sheath looks ok and an improvement on the sheath the SCHF52 came in.

Im wondering if its worth buying again in the newer version. The 52 isnt heavy as such but it could stand to diet 😂
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 9 ай бұрын
@@primafacie5029 I'm wondering the same. I think for me it would be an improvement since I think the 52 is heavy and possibly overbuild. I also prefer stainless over carbon steel. The sheath is thinner and would ride well inside my backpack. But not sure if the improvements are enough to spend the money on it.

Not sure about that 65mn Steel , it does good on the thicker Kershaw Camp 10 , but l put a HUGE Chip in my Camp 14 and there are video's of other people breaking the 14 and also the Camp 18 and the are also 65mn Steel but they are thinner higher Full Flat Grinds . Wish I could show you a picture on here , I can fit my Wrist inside the chip on the 14 it was weird how it just chipped out so big ....👍🖖

Finally got one from a friend. It is noticeably thinner in stock and thus weight than both the 52 it was modelled on and its grandfather the 37 (which was thicker than the 52)... it thus is not the chopper it's predecessors were. I'm not sure if that's a feature or a flaw as I liked the weight of both the 37 and 52.

The Schrade SCHF37 along with the 36 & 38 were 1/4” 1095 knives with different handles. I saw several of you Tubers snap the tips off the hollow ground 36 & 37’s. The Schf38 with it’s much less pronounced hollow grind was passing everyone’s tests back in the day...

Hi Chris, I saw the Wolverine and did a little research if you haven't remembered by now, my opinion is the Wolverine is a revamp of the old 56L and there is a Mini Wolverine which is probably a revamp of the 56 strangely enough although the Wolverine is AUS8 the Mini is 65MN !!!! seems a strange use of a 'chopping' quality steel for a sub 3 inch EDC blade atb Bill 😇
@JohnSmith-gs4lw
@JohnSmith-gs4lw 11 ай бұрын
IIRC, the 56L had a nearly quarter-inch thick blade. It was the quintessential sharpened pry bar. I picked up a LM (micarta scales) version from SMKW on closeout for $10 or something like that. It’s a nice chunk of 1095, but that geometry is atrocious. It would be a different story if the blade was twice as tall and was a full flat grind. But it’s not. And it’s little more than a pig sticker because of that.
@misolgit69
@misolgit69 11 ай бұрын
@JohnSmith-gs4lw according to Schrade the Wolverine is 3 mm spine like I said probably a revamp
@JohnSmith-gs4lw
@JohnSmith-gs4lw 11 ай бұрын
@@misolgit69 You’re probably right, they probably changed a few things and fortunately stock thickness was one of them! 3mm would be acceptable. It’s also a much taller blade on the Wolverine so that will help with the geometry a lot.

Ehh the previous version schf37 (1/4 inch 1095) was way better! This one is just OK in my opinion You can still grab some of the 5 inch ones(schf36) still 1/4 inch 1095 high carbon And I still grab a few when I can. Nice to stock up with especially for the money, one of the best ones I've ever used!! I actually tend to like the lil Ricky
