Schubert's setting of Friedrich Rückert's poem "Du bist die Ruh" (You are rest) dates from 1823 and was one of the songs published in Schubert's lifetime, in 1826. It is a classic example of "less is more" and at its root it is a very simple song. Two verses of nearly identical music are followed by a four line "envoi" which is also repeated with only one changed note. But what Schubert does with this simplicity creates this beautiful sensation of inner peace. One of my favorite Schubert songs (I say this about a lot of them, but so many of them are so good) and one that is in many singers' repertoires. A translation may be found at the following link:
