I first heard of An Die Musik in 1975, because a UK experimental theatre company, Pip Simmonds, created a show with its name. The show was set during the Holocaust in a concentration camp, but it was about a group of Jewish musicians who`s role it was, while appalling things were going on all around, to play music to mask the terror. I can`t even remember if the Schubert music was used or if they just took the title and played other things. It was one of the most powerful theatrical experiences I can recall in over 50 years of theatre going. So how wonderful it is to hear BZ, who`s family fled the Nazis, give so much to this young man and his wonderful accompanist

I think this is my favorite of Zander's interpretation classes so far. So inspiring. I love the quote of "To be worthy of this role, we need to develop our humanity to such a point that the world needs to hear from you." such a beautiful way to view music and being a performer.

*Lyrics (English Translation)* _To Music_ Beloved art, in how many a bleak hour, when I am enmeshed in life’s tumultuous round, have you kindled my heart to the warmth of love, and borne me away to a better world! Often a sigh, escaping from your harp, a sweet, celestial chord has revealed to me a heaven of happier times. Beloved art, for this I thank you!

I could easily have clicked on something less wholesome, but Zander is right - the world needs the healing qualities of music. He conveys the wisdom in Schubert’s music. This piece can bring tears to my eyes and warmth to my stony heart. It’s great to see such receptive musicians, well on their way to melting people with music’s beauty.

Absolutely beautiful singing and the pianist, a dream. I have difficulty with Zander's interpretation of the tempo however. Suddenly, this solemn prayer to music sounds completely flippant in his suggested tempo. The text is indeed solemn, and is about art providing a respite for all of life's trials and hardships. This fine duo's tempo was beautiful, in fact, the second verse was a bit faster and in my view, to the detriment of the poem. This is truly a fine duo and Zander, obviously a great artist....just in disagreement here.
@eclarksoprano3 жыл бұрын
I'm in sympathy with your reaction, although I think there is a middle way here. I love what Zander is talking about but I find the contrast in tempos within each verse to be way too extreme. A little more movement for the beginning than the duo started off with was welcome, but it was TOO fast, and then that HUGE ritardando at the climaxes pulled the whole thing all out of shape.
@chrisa00012 жыл бұрын
@@eclarksoprano he is, most of all, a conductor - and I noticed he was very “conductorly” when he was talking them through the piece. Duly noted, it is Mäßig, but *in 2*. So the base beat is half-bar, not quarter note. Plus both the vocal line and the left hand do work much better at a not-slow tempo. This also affords the opportunity to do those extreme pullbacks in tempo, without making it impossibly slow to sing. In terms of “pulling it out of shape”… perhaps the shape of the piece *is* to be “brisk” when declaiming the text, but then to linger very much on the climaxes, both in terms of high notes and important words. It’s *not supposed* to be performed at relatively the same tempo throughout.

Yes, I enjoyed Zander's interpretive skill and enthusiasm much more than any hope for this young singer. He has a "pretty" sound but I would be very surprised if he could ever get any meat into it - the low notes are nowhere and the highs, while more attractive than most countertenors, are unsteady when he puts any pressure on them.
@briandelaney97102 жыл бұрын

The high countertenor is a widely practiced and recognized voice type today. One of the foremost choral groups in the world, Chanticleer, is all-male, with the soprano and alto sung by countertenors. I’ve been to their performances, and it’s an astonishing sound.
