In terms of missed notes? Or interpretation?

More’s the pity. The seemingly casual, debonair quality that reveals depth but never insists on it comes from a different world. The world of Proust, Bergson, of pre-Great War Paris. The world the Great War blew up. Cortot was neither a perfect player nor a perfect man but there’s something here worth remembering. New to Schumann and lost to us. But we keep looking. And for my favorite work from Schumann try Anatol Ugorski.

This will raise hackles but for me Cortot realizes the playful Florestan side of Schumann while seldom achieving the seriousness of Eusebius. That may seem simplistic, even glib, but I’ve been wrestling with Cortot for almost sixty years. His magic is wondrous. Still, I don’t detect a great soul. This has nothing to do with Vichy. I revere many Nazis as musicians, not people, including Elly Ney. However, Cortot’s failure in politics may cast light on his essential shallowness. This is a minority view; it may even be singular. To put it in perspective, I relish the widely different David dances of Fanny Davies (sadly incomplete), Thierry de Brunhoff, Charles Rosen (the later Dutch recording) and especially Anatol Ugorski. Cortot is good for Papillons. It’s telling that we have no Fantasie apart from the chaotic masterclass excerpts. Okay, I’ll now duck!
