Schwalbe has just announced the renaming of their tire casings, to the more simplified Super line:
Super DH - Super Gravity - Super Trail - Super Ground - Super Race. Added to their Addix rubber compounds, and we've got a full fledged line of tires ready to take on anything you can ride them through.
For this video we take a look at our four favorite from the line up: the Magic Mary, the brand new Big Betty, Hans Dampf, and the re-designed Nobby Nic V2

I just bought 2 Nobby Nic Super Trail 27.5 x 2.6 ADDIX Soft. I'm currently running an old set of Schwalbe Hurricane 27.5 x 2.0 So they're a skinny tyre good for the bike trails which i mainly ride on. But i want to start doing more gravel and mild MTB trails so i think the Nobby Nics will work well....certainly better than my Hurricanes! They'll be slower on the sealed road though, will just have to pedal a little harder! I will also be converting to tubeless. I've only ever run tubed tyres so i'm excited to feel the difference. I run DT Swiss rims so they're tubeless ready. Love your channel mate! Keep up the excellent work. Cheers from Australia.

Fanatik do you guys find you can run really low pressure with the super gravity casings? I've been running Magic Mary's front and rear ultrasoft / soft and around 18 psi front and 20 rear. Love how you explain things, great video! Can you elaborate on the difference between Hans Dampf and Nobby Nic? They weigh almost exactly the same at 29x2.35, Supertrail Soft. Is one faster rolling? Is one better at clearing mud? Is one better at gripping / side knobs? I'm really having trouble finding this info online...
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback, glad you found it helpful. Generally, the Hans Dampf is a more aggressive tire. The lugs are a little taller and widely spaced to bite into the ground more. That does make it roll more slowly than the Nobby Nic, but it also clears mud a little more easily. Under most circumstances, folks will run a wider and more aggressive tire in the front, with a faster rolling tire in the back. The idea there is that you steer with your front tire, whereas the back is sort of just along for the ride. Similar idea with braking; as long as you are using both brakes and not just skidding your back wheel, the front tire is doing most of the stopping. That's because braking on your back wheel actively pushes your front wheel into the ground (think of trying to do a wheelie and hitting your back brake - it immediately sends your front wheel into the ground). All of which is to say that if you like the look of both you could try the Hans Dampf in front and Nobby Nic in back. Or really whatever you want - it's hard to quantify this stuff without just trying it! Hopefully that helps and doesn't just add to the confusion! Dan at Fanatik

Which combo would you recommend for NorCal riding on an EVIL Following? I currently have DHF and DHR and they have enough grip but I wonder if I can trade some of that grip for fast rolling and more efficient climbing. Conditions range from dry, loose, and rocky, to moist forest soil covered in detritus, often on the same ride, with root and rock gardens. I think Nobby Nic front and rear can handle it but I'm curious how a Hans Dampf in the front would work, it looks like it doesn't shed debris and rocks as well
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 2 жыл бұрын
I was actually running Nobby Nics on my Following, front and rear (as seen here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jquZhbODvp6dgIU.html) and I loved em. The Hans Dampf is a little knobbier, but I've had no problems with the Nobby Nics. I eventually swapped them for a Specialized Butcher in the front and Eliminator in the back (as seen here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLCKo92ZqKzHh4k.html), which also worked great and were even a little lighter, but because of that I had to air them up more. My preference was the Nobby Nics (if I'm being really nitpicky). You can find em all here: www.fanatikbike.com/collections/components/tires?page=1&rb_snize_facet5=29%22|29%22+Plus Cheers! Great video explained really well so as not to confuse people like me!! I currently have nobby nics on my haibike and I keep coming off!! Mostly on slippery mud and the dreaded chalk as we have rather a lot of this on the southdowns!! I just don't find the grippy or planted enough so I'm thinking that magic Mary's would be better for me. But I like what you said about the big Betty on the rear too!! What are your opinions on this please? Just want to enjoy autumn and winter riding without ending up on the ground. 😎😎
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah! I wasn't familiar with the South Downs, but it looks like a gorgeous area!! Now, I don't know about riding on chalk hills, but I do know about slippery mud. There's always a full on mudspike like the Dirty Dan, but those are a bit much for anything other than super muddy conditions, so I do think something a little less spikey would suit well and be much more fun the rest of the time. I've run Magic Marys on both front and rear of my downhill bike, but that was before the Big Betty was out. It does work well, but slow rolling. Less of a concern on a downhill bike where you don't have to pedal uphill much. Depending on how big a part of your day that is, I'm thinking a Magic Mary up front, and either a Big Betty or a Hans Dampf (a little faster than Big Betty) on the back, depending on what your average ride consists of. Hope that helps! Dan at Fanatik

I don't like how you showed the tire rolled up instead of on a rim. But good info. And is there a chart comparing tires from different brands? So I can see what is the Schlawbe version of a Maxxis Assegai?
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo 3 жыл бұрын
Hi net poser, Thanks for the feedback, I'll get them mounted up in the next tire video. Outside of less specialized brands (😉), most tire manufacturers don't make "versions" of each others tires. There is no Schwalbe version of a Maxxis Assegai. The most similar application, however, would likely be the Hans Dampf or possibly the Magic Mary, although the latter is more of a modified mud spike than the Assegai. A phenomenal tire though, I use it frequently. Cheers - Dan at Fanatik

Picking up a Transition Spire on Friday and notice they come stock with Super Trail Magic Mary and Big Betty. Thanks you all are the best and I don’t mind if you tell me to order new tires from you!
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo Жыл бұрын
Hey Johnnie, that's exciting, congratulations! The Super Trail casing is pretty dang beefy and will probably hold up fine (how much do you weigh?). Compared to the Maxxis line up I'd say it's in between Double Down and Exo+. Those tires are both great, aggressive tires, but they are pretty slow rolling. Designed to really dig into the ground. In New Mexico, where you're riding hard-pack, I might suggest some faster rolling tires that don't have as deep of lugs. In the Schwalbe line, if you want to try that brand, I'd suggest looking at the Hans Dampf and the Nobby Nic (maybe the former in the front and the latter in the back). Alternately, just going with your tried and true tires! Let us know if you have any other Qs, or if we can help with anything else. If you want quicker answers, Live Chat on our webiste has people on it during our work hours, and we get back to emails really quickly too (sales @ fanatikbike.com). Cheers! Dan P.

@@FanatikBikeCo Hey Dan thanks for the quick response! I weigh 190 with riding gear on. I don’t usually get punctures, but I am always on the cautious side (psi and casing) so I don’t ding or crack a rim. I think you’ve convinced me to give the tires a go as I’m fine with more aggressive knobs because once the snow melts I will be riding a lot more high elevation/forest areas with shuttles, etc. I’m a little worried with the rear not being a beefier casing just because that is an option, but I will be running a tannus insert.

They might look a little different, but nothing so drastic that you'll be able to feel a difference regarding the width. So a lot of my terrain needs better grip and so went fr and rear nobby Nick .I did a race like that and felt more stable for a course I was not familiar with. This year no races but went wider and to the Hans Dampf 2.35 rear and 2.6 fr . The tires are a bit heavier but larger diameter and that is great. So now I am more confident and a little faster than the year before. I corner on loose and brake well and can go lower pressures. Your comment remids me of the way the "Sea-man" says "Swallow, come!" in South Park. Shwahlbeh or Swallbee same thing, don't get into such things makes you look narrow-minded, there are many languages & accents in the world, it's beutiful.

This dude sounds like he started riding Schwalbe 2 years ago. And "breaking, breaking, breaking... everything is for breaking" :D Great that Schwalbe survived those degenerated bots lying about knobs falling off, such a miserable way to compete. Morons believed such blatant lies. With this new and better casing I'm a happy customer. Best tires on Earth. Keep 26 alive!

I like to be able to slow down when I need to ;) I started to check out Schwalbe tires in 2014 when I moved away from Colorado, where the sidewalls on Schwalbe's tires at that time just didn't hold up well. I started to enjoy them a few years later, when the knobs stopped falling off at a moments notice!! Currently, Magic Mary is my go to tire on my downhill bike, and trail bike in the winter. Cheers - Dan at Fanatik

@@FanatikBikeCo The sidewalls thing I understand. The knobs falling off is a lie man, everybody knows about it today. The bots of another bigg tire company went dirty and used that to discredit Schwalbe, Kenda (KendaSUPRIZE, apparently they used to brake grip all of the sudden, so people hurt themselves if driving Nevegal, total BS) and another competing companies, and succeded. We all know who they are. I have never seen a fallen knob out of normal ride, only seen one dude's Nevegals break traction for no reason. Bots are controlling the world, look how many people believe thei lies.

@@FanatikBikeCo Most changes on Nick are not for breaking, they are changing the tire to be more rear specific, so RollRes and thrust forward related. Still not there in my opinion. Soft MagicMary is the best MTB tire overall, I trust/put my life on it. Can't wait for the SuperGround 26er. Thanks for the reply human of similar interest.

@@daryldaryl887 It depends, in sommer, around the city and on roads I like to have Rock Razors in the back, specially on the Hardtail. They don't make them any more, but I have 5-6 of them stashed. I have NobbyN & HansD in speedgrip too. If I use DH Marries or lighter ones (up front) depends on the weather and ground conditions, but they work. Crazy Bobs for playing. Nothing special, just standard stuff. What about you?

I love Schwalbe but gat dayyum is there a big weight penalty with these new models. The super trials are heavy a shit. 2.4 lbs for a nobby nic for thier narrowest offering! For comparison the old Nic was 1.9 lbs. That's a half pound difference for the same tire. I think they missed the boat. It's really hard to build a sub 30lb 29er with 5 pounds of rubber without dropping 9-10k.

I remember their ig account talking about the thicker walls are meant to prevent snake bites/pinch flats. Like they wanted to make tire inserts not needed for these

It's tough to make all the market segments happy. When I lived in Colorado we'd take the Schwalbe's that came on bikes off and discount them massively. No one would run them, because the casings would tear instantly in those sharp rocks. Out here that wasn't an issue, but I've had several people people that wouldn't run anything lighter than super gravity because the tires would squirm and fold under hard cornering. Gotta pick your battles, I suppose. They do make the Nobby Nic in 2.25 in Super Ground. Thanks for watching and commenting! Dan at Fanatik

@@FanatikBikeCo Yeah man, I feel that. I have little doubt that the new tires outperform the old. It's all just personal opinion but it would have been nice if they looked at the competition in the trail segment and found a way to make a more capable tire and kept the weight competitive with other companies. These weigh as much as the more gravity focused tires from other brands. I would expect a weight penalty with a tire more capable but these seem out of bounds. I'm not a giant weight weenie but I'm consistently doing 3000ft+ of climbing when I ride and while I can do it no matter the weight of the bike it's about how I feel after and the next day when I need to perform in other aspects of life.
