A European bronze medal in this couples' first appearance at the event! A full decade later with new partner Mirko Mueller, Peggy Schwarz would get on an ISU championship podium again at the 1998 worlds. Alexander Koenig here is the current coach of Savchenko & Massot.

Fantastic. Such a shame they never repeated this type of quality skating after this competition.

Had they skated like this in Calgary they would have cracked the top 6

You know Dick Button seemed to think in Calgary that this pair had a chance to wrestle the bronze from the Americans, and after seeing this performance, I see he was right.

I spent a lot of time in the area where I got CBC (Toller C) & CTV (Debbie W & Brian P) coverages in the late 1980s. Unlike Debbie and Brian, Toller was rarely completely impressed w/ any of the performances, but he made some remarkably positive comments @ 1988 Euros. He loved this couple, of course, and he loved the Duchesnays and Selezneva & Makarov--and his comments were generally quite positive for others, as well. [The only skaters he seemed totally disappointed with at this competition were G&G...and that negative tone continued through his commentary at the Worlds that year...]
