As a general rule, plants don't consume oxygen; they emit oxygen and consume carbon dioxide. There's probably still a way to make the protag. give their life for the plant, but the oxygen warning is probably not the best way. The comments I'm seeing are complaining about the imprecise landing, but the pod can't land on uneven terrain, like the switchbacks shown, so I think that part is okay. Though it might be worth a line for why they chose to land where they did instead of the detected location of the plant. Caves and uneven terrain are some of the reasons you could use. If that tent + PVC is a safe enough shelter from the storm, then the pod would be as well, so storms might not be a good reason for the hike.

You'd think she could have switched between giving the plant some oxygen, and herself some. It's not likely to consume all the oxygen in that bell so quickly. Let's ignore that the plant needs oxygen to survive :P And, yes, she should have been wearing a helmet.

It's because the terrain between the landing spot and the area of interest was so rocky it would damage the ship when it landed. Like, you can't park a boat on jagged rocks. I imagine you can't park a spaceship that weighs thousands of pounds on them either. I bet they landed on the closest flat piece of land, which was 15 miles away.

Visually a nice piece of work, but otherwise it couldn't convince me. As most other comments stated, the imprecise landing doesn't match the high-tech spaceship design. The reentry vehicle also wouldn't be aerodynamically stable (not mentioning structural issues) with those wings pointing forward, but that's creative freedom I can live with. Then the shelter - it looks very flimsy, not like it would survive even a gusty wind in that rocky landscape, given that the next storm almost killed Karen. Then the plant growing on the planrt requiring oxygen to be carried? That simply doesn't make any sense at all. At the end, the extraction point is between ruined buildings. Normally, you'd expect a flat, open area to land an extraction pod. In my opinion, having Karen to get back to the landing pod would make more sense. Changing the story in a way that the way to the plant is easy first, but then a storm coming and blocking the way back with a rock slide so she has to find a way around to get back to the pod would make way more sense and keep the story basically identical and doesn't need the "plant requires oxygen" twist to work.
@bozdowleder2303
@bozdowleder2303 8 ай бұрын
The way I imagined the backstory is that earth finally becomes no longer suitable for habitation and humans escape to a different planet or build space stations. This happens within Karen's lifetime. Karen's mother, a scientist, develops a synthetic plant that needs oxygen at the early stages of its development to grow quickly(without this it will still survive for a period but not grow) but afterwards it can sustain itself in any environment, spread rapidly, and also clean up the atmosphere. So she goes on a mission to re-terraform the earth. But she does not make it because a storm compromises her mission. Further, because this synthetic plant is very difficult and expensive to create, only one specimen was made and that had gone with the mother's mission. Karen tries to induce people to manufacture another specimen but they are unwilling because of the cost. So she decides to go to earth to get back her mother's plant before it wirhers for lack of oxygen, partly for sentimental reasons, and also to sustain the possibility of a future terraforming mission. But she ends up terraforming earth herself. But I agree that her initial landing should be much closer to the plant and a storm and landslide are the reason getting back becomes a problem

@CodAv123
@CodAv123 7 ай бұрын
@@lisanidog8178 It still must make sense at some level. I don't expect it to be scientifically correct in any way (hence science *fiction*), but at least the story should follow some basic logic. It's not easy to write a good story and then make an enjoyable movie from it, so I think it's key to give the maker some constructive criticism for future projects. The short is otherwise very well made - effects, acting, sound design are all great.
@lisanidog8178
@lisanidog8178 7 ай бұрын
@@CodAv123 there’s a difference between constructive criticism and nit picking. In terms of what plants do, it’s another environment. Alien plants do things differently. In the end there were thousands in what looked like a meadow. However they processed things it worked. We have to stop judging by how plants work here. Completely different environment, completely different plant structure, completely different evolution. It wasn’t Earth. In terms of how the ship’s design is, it works in the film. No one here are NASA engineers and the ship was built in another country. They know all about space flight, made it work and it’s called poetic license. It’s a story not a space engineering documentary or Earth botany documentary. It’s an alien world and we should accept how that world functions. Karen did her best. She’s to be cheered for not nit picked. It makes sense in terms of fiction. In fiction you can make up whatever you want. Reality is suspended.

With a larger budget, I would have gladly explained the backstory, but with 3500 euros, we shot only what was absolutely necessary. Anyway, at the beginning, the AI mentions that it's the last remaining capsule, so wasting fuel to search for a plant of unknown location wouldn't be wise. That's why she moves on foot. Humanity now lives in space ships, as indicated by the Explorer numbers. In the end, we see many ships returning to the repopulated planet. That planet is Earth. It becomes clear at the end when we see the moon and buildings. I hope it's clearer now. Thank you so much for watching our short film. All that VFX work was undercut by a story that made no sense. The 15 mile trek might make more sense if the plant was in a rocky cliff face, or someplace inaccessible to her ship, but everything was at least as flat as the area where the ship landed. Then, why did the plant need her oxygen when it was growing rapidly without it? Last, how the Hell did this newly oxygenated plant 1. get out of the device she put it in, 2. cover the entire planet, and 3. also mutate into a completely different subspecies (the trees), all in 25 years? Any species that invasive would be a threat to any other form of life on the planet. The FX and production values were good for a low budget film. The same crew with a better script would have killed. Maybe next time...

I was really rooting for this film to be good because it looked great, unfortunately the plot holes killed it. Landing so far without explanation, a plant that survived, but inexplicably needed her O2 to survive? Then somehow the plant lived, broke out of its container and spread all over. Again, visually it looked great, but the writing confused me.

Hello and thank you for watching our short film and for the feedback. The location of the plant is not precisely known, so they landed at a not-too-specific point. The plant is of a new and special type. We combined fantasy and sci-fi in this short, and our intention was not to create a documentary but a film that conveys a message. Nevertheless, during the night, the plants need oxygen. We researched extensively to make everything quite plausible. Thanks again for watching. It is an honor for us to be on Dust with a short film made with just a budget of 3000 euros. Carlos... director and vfx artist at Plant.

hey Dust - *thank you* for all you to showcase sci-fi short films - it is really really appreciated. and my fellow Dust subscribers - hi, hello, 👋 _waves_ - re the *15 miles* (which was MY major issue) - the official reason is - 'she land far from area because of the type of terrain' (and because of the fuel) as with many shorts - the creative people behind this come here, in this case Carlos Milite the director vfx artist for 'Plant' has been reading the comments, and is taking on board the constructive feedback. 'We explain many time that this was a desperate Mission. There were many others Mission all failed. Our focus was on the attitude and passion of our Character for this impossible Mission. If this was Easy wouldn't be a story.' I think, like many of you have commented, that there are some major flaws in the plot - this is a creative process - to me this like a 'test screening' that the film industry does all the time. Carlos and his team are listening to the feedback - and are working on fixing the flaws - but apparently as revised version of this couldn't be uploaded to Dust Dust - is this right? if so, why? I for one would LOVE to see a revised version - addressing the 15 miles, the plant needing oxygen, other plot issues my fellow Dust subscribers - and/or anyone just passing through - wouldn't that be great - to see your feedback heard, listened to - a creative process changed as a result of lessons learnt from us all - after all, the creative process is just this *creative* - not perfect as Carlos says "Anyway we know that our short isnt perfect but we did with 3500 euros Only and we Will do Better Next time 😃" - don't YOU want to see the revised version here on Dust - next level Dust 😊- not just show-casing creative content - actually helping to make _better_ content - (allowing Carlos to provide us all with a revised version of Plant - ) just seems like a win-win-win for all of us - you, us - Carlos and his team - sci-fi content in general just a thought

@@lowtekmnemonicWe've won many awards, yes. Nobody gifted us anything because we are nobody and we are a small crew. This isn't a test, it was actually published 4 years ago on the official channel, and we received a lot of positive feedback. Among those, however, there were also the same criticisms as the ones mentioned here about the distance covered, etc. I had decided to improve some lines in the script, but Dust rightfully wanted the same product already published on another channel. I value the criticisms directed at me because, as an artist, I work for people, and I always thank them when they spend time watching my work. There are criticisms I understand and they will help me improve; others, on the other hand, I believe are subjective. Some people liked the film, others didn't. Moving music and good acting. But the plot was terrible. Knew area where the plant was but landed 15 miles from it? Plant lives on planet without life support but needs oxygen for a 500 meter walk? If you want to fix this, take out the scene where her father brings her food and put it as the ending. This makes it look like it was a dream and in dreams, anything is possible.

I normally like the shorts that come from this channel but there are so many issues with the execution of this one that I can't ignore. From the face masks poor fit (what is the point/what is it there for), to the suit's monitor being placed where the user cant even see it, the cable on the shoulder sticking up a good 6 inches just asking to be snagged and tear, the poor landing (which I could overlook as a 'no better landing area closer' if the area she was walking through didn't look the same as the landing point and be just as flat and open), and multiple other issues. The story idea was good, but the execution was poor.

(so... 0.4 miles..) to set off a beacon that was already there? AND was launched from the ship / the computer - what? why? none of this makes sense the 'plant' (assuming new planet, dying, last remaining plant...) needed oxygen to survive - so how did it survive without it? WHAT is that at the end? her and the plant (or just the container) - why suddenly skeleton buildings behind her on barren planet ??? again - this makes no sense... take it the 25 years later is this new planet - what? if they can *fix* that barren planet why not earth?? - why i'm so frustrated all this time, energy, money, resources, effort spent focused on mars, moon - rather than FIXING earth! 🌍🌍🌍 oh also - though he was her partner/husband - ick DO appreciate the clear subtitles sorry to be so negative. Good film, but stupid computer. Why not fly the dam ship to her location? You'd think with all that tech, it could do that. Edit: It did not occur to me there was a fuel issue. Though I paid little attention to the English subtitles. My take is that they landed where they did at the eye of the storm. You don't need very flat land to make a landing. Hell you could land on a hill at an angle as long as the angle doesn't call a fall or tilt. I figured the location of the plant wasn't exactly known, but the woman used her memories, or her gut instinct to find it. It was at that point, after the storm, she should have called the ship to her location. Though I'd understand that wouldn't allow for exiting the planet if there was a fuel issue.

Hello and thank you for watching our short film. I understand your point of view, but the ship couldn't land randomly; no one knows the exact location of the plant. In the film, our protagonist finds it almost by chance because she believes in it until the end, and the storm clears the way for her. Additionally, the capsule couldn't have reached it and returned. Therefore, a probe is sent, and even though it would have been too late for the protagonist, thanks to her body acting as fertilizer, that probe gathers valuable data for the future of humanity. I appreciate your viewing, and for us, it is an honor to be on Dust with a short film made with a budget of 3000 euros. Carlos Milite director vfx artist plant

When the pickup craft was launched, it had the same destination point the first one had and there was no storm this time. Remember, #2 was a backup craft since the 1st one was broken. Oh Karen if only you could see those plants that are more that have found their own way of doing things as not everything has to act like earth plants to be useful. You paved the way for others, girl.

Too much drama and bad acting. Sci-fi left on second plan. Bad. And credits still rolling until 4th minute.

This reviewer seems to dislike drama and should stick to action movies. Unsure why reviewer points out that the credits are shown for 4 minutes. It could be to highlight that no "action" is to be expected till the 5th minute or that according to the standards the reviewer has been conditioned to except, 4 minutes is too long for a short movie. ★★★☆☆ review

The acting was okay for what it was. The execution on everything else was lacking.

Agreed! Very touching. Always love the theme of the value of meaningful connections in almost all of the DUST presentations.
