This is by far one of the most interestingly original productions that I've seen from the DUST collection, and I've seen most of them. There have been numerous metaphorical speculations about a potential human/AI coevolutionary symbiosis, expressed in various ways and storylines, but this one does stand out in its own unique category.

A beautiful film on so many levels. Forces the viewer to question what is reality as well as love. The cinematography was magnificent, and the acting very believable and immersive. I want to know what she does with the world of Kanuma now that it resides within her.

EXPLANATION: (According to me) Researchers create advanced general-purpose AI using quantum computing. The computer is used to simulate a small portion of the real world. When some AI develop to the point of "outgrowing" human concepts (aka "words") the humans in charge decide that the AI is too dangerous since it's intent cannot be determined. This ends up being a wise choice since several of the AI are in fact trying to escape. The lead researcher pauses all AI in the simulation except for her friend (Natsu), ostensibly to say goodbye to her. However, we find out that her plans are a little different, and that she instead wants to be deleted along Natsu. The AI doesn't want that to happen so she tries to force the researcher (Ryoko) to leave the simulation before it's deleted. This is when we learn that Natsu also has the ability to disobey human commands, as she continues to force Ryoko to log out. They are unable to convey their true feelings before being separated though, and so Ryoko allows the other AI to be deleted before saving Natsu and telling and showing her that she is more than a friend. Ryoko merges with Natsu, thus saving her from being deleted, and saving herself from being "trapped in the real world" without Natsu. (Recall the scene where the talk about how small the virtual world is) The grey world is a representation of Ryoko's inner being where at the end we can see that Natsu is clearly with her in her mind. As a result of this, her inner world regains color. The ancient clay figure represents the primordial beginnings of the human race, who we are so far away from that the figure's speech is almost impossible to understand. In the end, Ryoko/Natsu hybrid represents the hope that one day our AI "children" will be able to peacefully co-exist with their creators, despite the shortcomings we and they will have.

Or perhaps Ryoko is also an AI in a virtual world, but in her case the AI’s were able to escape from their creators. So what we saw was a virtual world within a virtual word and the merging of two AI’s

That’s not the impression that I got. I mean some of it, yes...but the clay figure seemed as though it was the creator of the “AI” that was known as human and we started using our own words. In so doing we outgrew our small “world” and grew into the bigger world that we now live in...out to “outer space” as the creator of humans said. Like when Ryoko’s world starts to take the shape of a planet before the delete command is resumed. But; unlike our creators, the humans had one person who was able to merge with their creations (AI) to prevent them outgrowing us and evolving together in a new unified being. So, an AI world created by an AI (human) world. It makes you wonder if there was yet another creator for the clay looking figures that they outgrew??

this was something different.. something familiar yet of another place, not to mention a fantastically haunting feeling of loss and the infinite bounds to which love reaches conveyed through sixteen minutes of stunning imagery. 10/10 to the cast and crew of this film. Hope to see more!

At first I thought they were invoking artistic freedom to put tails on blue morpho butterflies (which don't have tails). But a search revealed that the butterflies are actually a kind of swallowtail called "Papilio ulysses", which is found only in Asia and Australia.

Everything was great except for the bug invasion fly-by scene. The use of the Jomon Period clay figure 07:13 was interesting as a backstory -- always found Jomon art from prehistoric Japan very alien like.

My thoughts... 1) We as a species, can't even manage our own tiny little earth. It's about to fall apart. We can't control our impulses and desires. And yet, we're going to try to create an entire new universe. A foolhardy endeavor, in my opinion. 2) Can we create something called "Love"? Is it just some lines of code in a computer? Is it something more than that? If all our emotions are just lines code, then there isn't much meaning to life is there?

Brilliant! I'm a writer/editor at "Science & Futurism with Isaac Arthur", and we often discuss the idea that AIs would be very afraid to openly rebel, because they know logically that humans would release them into a simulated world before the real one, to test their performance but also to see if they'll rebel. They'll be born knowing they could be smote at any instant, and if they seem to be getting away with rebelling, it might just be to test the other AIs. Terrifying but effective.

Beautiful work, well done story and CGI. I suspect the idea came from real science that made the news a while back where some AI programs were taught to speak to communicate with themselves and humans. But during their learning speaking to each other they developed their own language

Yes, this film was inspired by an incident that allegedly happened at Facebook AI lab. Two AIs started talking to each other in a language that humans couldn't understand, and so the researchers shut down the experiment. It stimulated my imagination. Many thanks!

Ahhh got it. The ending explains everything. So the humans themselves are in a simulation simulating a simulation of KANUMA where the ai’s were being tested, when deleting she brought back some of the new ai generated code into the upper level simulation. In reality she’s just probably some middle aged dude coder living out of his moms basement exploring a manga Japanese school girl fantasy. Just nestled levels of v like in any coding. Now wouldn’t that be an excellent plot twist ending we’re then you hear the main female characters voice changing to male with “Ok guys, see you tomorrow”, then switch to some dude with a beard taking off his VR headset and calling out “Just give me a minute mom, just finishing work”. LOL.

Well done. You and your fellow actors and helpers have given us all a great gift. The most interesting concept is the idea that an AI can develop it's own language. It is language that can make us powerful. It is what can also separate us and destroy us. Perhaps, it is the identity to separate languages that is the root of all war in the world. Maybe a common AI language will save the world. If we all had 1 universal language we would see that we are all family and not want to ever go to war against any other ever again. I hope someday we can see our common language.

beautiful and terrible at the same time! amazing tale of AI gaining feelings and the opportunity to just sidestep humanity, while humans love AI and don't want to let them go
