If this event actually happened, then there was another disappearance exactly the same over the Bass Strait in Australia years ago when a young pilot named Valentich went missing under the same circumstances. No trace was ever found of him or the plane. His last words were, its hovering over the top of me, its not a plane.

Amazing one! Of all the Dust shorts that I have seen, this is my personal favourite along with The Secret Number. The traffic controller's last work day shown at the control room led to an interesting and intriguing build-up to the main incident.

I watch a lot of shorts and enjoyed this one also. I don't know why people hate so much on these shorts. Limited budget = No CGI, no big names, no fancy editing, just a good simple story. I thought for sure the end would show the main Character waking up the nexy day, getting the paper and reading of the Roswell UFO crash as the camera pulls away showing the questioning look on his face. Fade out, End scene.. Thanks... :)

Did anyone notice the sudden massive burst of signal just after Valentich's signal seemed to terminate? Umm I'm not normally prone to speculate but it seemed the "burst" almost seemed like the unknown bogie well...attempted to broadcast some kind of warning? It almost seemed like there was some menace to it. Was there any tapes or anything of Valentich's transmission before his disappearance?

The things I find most interesting about Valentich's disappearance are, 1) *All the lies...* (more on that in a bit) 2) Both he and is father were big UFO buffs. 3) His transmission was eerily similar to the Air Traffic Control scene from "Close Encounters", which had been released only one year prior. 4) Pieces of a plane, identical to the one Valentich flew, washed ashore about five years after his disappearance. The most likely scenario for what actually happened is that Valentich was playing a prank that ended up costing him his life. *Back to the lies:* Valentich told his family and his girlfriend that he was going to King Island to pick up crayfish, but there are no crayfish on King Island. He told the airport from which he rented the plane that he was going to pick up passengers, but there was no one on King Island waiting for him. And then there was the fact that the airport on King Island was uncontrolled (meaning, in order to land he would have had to call ahead to the airport to let them know he was coming, so they could turn on the landing lights for him... no such call was ever made). From all of that, it seems pretty obvious that Valentich never had any intention of landing on King Island; but then why didn't he return to Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne? *Spacial Disorientation* Valentich's stunt took place at night, over the Pacific ocean. In fact, it was his very first flight over a large body of water at night. Being over water at night is the most common place for pilots to suffer spacial disorientation. From Valentich's own transcript, just before he disappears, he told Air Traffic Control that he was orbiting, which was something he needed to do to give ATC something to look at on their radar... a large, somewhat stationary target to make it seem like there could be something there with him when their wasn't. As he's orbiting he probably became disoriented (he can't see the horizon line, everywhere he looks it's black). He's not concentrating on his instruments, because he's on the radio. Without noticing, he's suddenly climbing instead of flying level... this stalls his engine (hence the radio call about his engine's rough idle). As he's trying to correct what seems like a minor miscalculation, he's still on the radio trying to sell his story... he's talking about the object hovering over him instead of fully concentrating on his instruments... instead of correcting the stall, he overcorrects... now he starts fighting the ball that is his artificial horizon. There's nothing outside to help him, everywhere he looks it's solid black. The ball is all over the place, nothing he does seems to help, he tries pushing the stick and rudder in the opposite direction that the ball is spinning... but nothing works. Why can't he fix this? What's wrong with his plane? Less than two minutes after he first tells Moorabbin about his engine's rough idle, Valentich hits the surface of the water at a suicidal speed. Five years later, pieces of a plane exactly like the one Valentich was flying washed ashore on an island 200 miles east of the one he was flying to. Authorities stated that no other plane of the specific type Valentich was flying that night has ever crashed anywhere near that area (except, of course, his... in all probability).

An inexperienced pilot becoming spatially disoriented while flying a small plane? That's what happened in the real life story this was based on. It happens from time to time. The real life pilot was flying over the Pacific Ocean, which can swallow up much larger things than a Cessna

Did anybody spot Brendan Fehr? He was the pilot flying the Cessna, talking to the Roswell Control Tower. However, this actor was also one of the three main characters of the teen sci-fi series ROSWELL - about 3 aliens who were abandoned on earth and adopted by human parents. It seems both ironic and yet a tribute to his role in ROSWELL the TV series, that he should play a pilot who gets abducted by aliens while flying over Roswell. By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the low budget.

Beautiful cinematography... glacial pacing... by 10 minutes in you're about to nod off or surf elsewhere... it catches you off guard at 12:30 when the pilot reports the UFO... it gets really UFO-ish for a few minutes, and gripping. Then ends with mystery. I wonder what the old air traffic controller thought about his retirement party? :) Good short film - based on a UFO incident in South Australia in 1978. (P.S. Is there actually an airport in Roswell, NM? I'm guessing the "true story" was shifted there to make it more USA-UFO-ish!)

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. The actual case on which this is evidently based - the Frederick Valentich case in Australia - had a number of features that made it even weirder than the events depicted here. Some witnesses on the ground reported seeing a small plane (apparently Valentich's) encountering a green light. The next day, a farmer on country north of, but not far from, the incident reported seeing a "ufo carrying a Cessna underneath".

I think a good rendition of the Frederick Valentich case would be to tell what probably happened, no UFO whatsoever, and I think it would still make a great film.

Beautifully filmed and edited, but pity you switched location from Australia to Roswell... It is a fascinating story.

Nice! I still stand by my belief that mainstream Hollywood needs to step aside for the filmmakers like these folks. They know what is good and not just a bunch of CG (CG has it's place, but not at the expense of plot). Great job!

Every year dozens of airplanes disappear without a trace over the continental United States. This doesn't mean there are lots of alien abductions or anything like that. It just means that there are large swathes of the United States that are basically just empty, that people fly airplanes that occasionally fail, that pilots occasionally fail to control their aircraft for whatever reason, that pilots occasionally fail to notice the mountain they're about to fly into, that pilots don't all carry personal locator beacons, that aircraft owners don't check the emergency locator beacons in their aircraft to make sure they're working, that an airplane that has crashed is damned hard to spot from the air, and so forth. Since the airplanes that go missing are often flying under visual flight rules and, therefore, don't have to talk to air traffic control and since an awful lot of those don't file flight plans (perhaps indicating that they have no desire to talk to air traffic control) they're not noticed as missing until well after something could be done to help them, if they're noticed at all. A pilot like the fellow in the film probably would have had engine trouble and crashed in the desert miles from any hope of rescue and died of thirst three or four days later. Vertigo is also a possibility, although that would probably result in a crash that kills the pilot rather than a forced landing that he might conceivably walk away from. If, as many people are saying, that the story is based on the story of that Australian fellow, then replace "desert" with "ocean." (While I'm thinking about it, I memorized that "swamp gas reflecting Venus" line for my Halloween costume a few years back, but people kept asking me if I was a Blues Brother. The following year, with a Fedora instead of a Neuralyzer, I went as a Blues Brother and people kept asking me if I was a Man in Black. I just can't win.)

Are you talking about CB radios in general? As a trucker, I believed them to be "an indispensable tool" for most of the past 30 years. Today however... I never even turn on the one in my work truck because I have deemed it useless. Mostly due to the fact that all I ever hear on it... is people who misuse it. No useful information... No ability to communicate with the other truckers around me... Just useless chatter, or dead air/static. Maybe it's just a Pacific Northwest thing. I haven't been out of Washington state in a few years.

@@bobinthewest8559 Not that you'd be out in it (of course), _but_ ... the thing about CBs and especially short-wave transceivers is, during a disaster, they might be the only things that work. Cell towers might be down, or spotty at best. There might be widespread power outages, and your CB could become a lifeline.

Music and the building of atmosphere are key not CGI and fast paced editing. A good rendition of what happened to Fredrich Vanentich back in the 70s over the Bass Strait Australia.
