This type of shorts shows that the most important thing in a film of any genre is the story and the human component. The sci fi setting is very well done, but in the end it is the motivations of the characters and their depth that bring any setting to life, be it sci fi or fantasy. A pleasant surprise that reminded me of the Firefly/Serenity style with the Cowboy Bebop sensibility. It deserves to be expanded to a series.

those were the same reference points I thought of - the Firefly/Serenity verse without the space western stuff plus the weirder aliens from the Mos Eisley Cantina or Jabba's palace, the society we see at the end is straight out of Dune too

*_Isaiah 53.3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth._* _Jesus Christ loves you. So I would venture to say that, bottom line, they both lost. From the father's prospective it was damned if you and damned if you don't so, for his daughter's sake, he took a chance on moving this "cargo" and it came back and bit him. @@johnstrawb3521 good point, but is that so different from our world? the money people make off things like slavery can buy any future for their children they want, which is why it is usually the foundation of how they present themselves to the ethical crowd they build their public social lives from: "I just want the best life for my family" also, was the work he was doing before really honest work? he starts off dealing consistently in a more acceptable kind of slavery with animals kept in a state of forced inactivity, fear and confusion that are chained up in dark metal boxes with no awareness of what their native habitat even looks like (plus keeping a sweet little secret slave in a cramped, smoky tin that he uses to pleasure himself when he's alone in his office, unless he's in a mood and then he abuses it to the point of reminding it of its mortality through fear of his physical dominance, because fuck it, it slithers and so doesn't even have mammal rights), and he doesn't even bat an eyelid when they all perish of extreme cold and suffocation because he lost his "chattel" and so has more important issues to worry about, like his finances. but as soon as his slaves can talk he's crossed a line and develops a "conscience" because his daughter and society prohibit his actions. afaic he's severely lacking in empathy even before dealing in sentient slaves. do you think that juxtaposition is deliberate?
