World-famous physicist Michio Kaku separates fact from fiction in Mass Effect. He should be in mass effect 4 that would be pretty cool.

Daniel Kayser is describing things very inaccurately in terms of the science of the universe of Mass Effect. Biotics isn't telekinesis, its changing the mass of people and objects/materials by using different types of mass effect fields. The warp effect completely shreds things by making the mass in the object rapidly increase and decrease. Ultra strong materials are made by making them out of certain alloys then drastically decreasing their mass. Artificial gravity with increasing the mass of people. Many other unique uses of mass effect are shown in each of the games. The mass relays create "an envelope of mass free space," which basically means that the ships that go through the relays are completely weightless and the space in between two relays is completely devoid of mass so there is a temporary absence of "space-time" resulting in instantaneous travel between the two relays. The way that Daniel puts each concept to Michio is a very skewed definition, if that.
@acheron16
@acheron16 10 жыл бұрын
Well he isn't entirely wrong by saying that biotics is KINDA like telekinesis. If the element zero and mass effects really existed (the in game version of mass effects), if an electric current passed through eezo the mass effect would be produced AROUND IT. But in the game we see biotics producing fields at varying distances and sizes having no explanation as to HOW they can project those fields. The mass relays part, the game itself is pretty vague in that regard, since it pushes a bit the laws of physics in order to make the relays real (how do they physically act in order to make that envelope of mass free space?) so they were correct on developing that theory based on known physics. But the invisibility part is spot on and this scientist is just awesome

Yea but remember It's not Dr. Michio Kakus fault it's not like he ever played the game. Hes just comparing Biotics to Telekinesis cause it looks similar to Biotics even though it isn't. They guy interviewing him didn't explain Biotics very well. Or else maybe he would understand that Biotics is a bit different than what he thought it was. And Yea I agree Daniel Kayser acts like he never played mass effect with the questions he asked. What he should have done is show Dr. Michio Kaku the Mass Effect Codex cause then that would have explained to him how the Mass Effect universe tech works. Then he could do a proper way of explaining things rather then comparing it to stuff that sounds like it works a lot like telekinesis.

Austin Clark I never said anything was Dr. Kaku's fault in my original comment. I specifically pointed out that it was Daniel who was presenting things in a "skewed" fashion. I kept the fact that the good doctor hadn't played any of the games in consideration for my argument from the very beginning. He was doing an exemplary job explaining the ideas that he was asked to explain. Daniel/ his researchers, (if he had any) are the only ones at fault. Its not called, "Real scientific concepts compared to the science of Mass Effect", it is only simply "The science of Mass Effect 2" essentially science fiction which is the only realm things should have been explained in with perhaps the occasional relevant piece of real science that can be connected to each fictional concept.
@TheClark501
@TheClark501 10 жыл бұрын
firstlightrevan Opes sorry I was not trying to make it look like you said it's his fault. I was only pointing out it's the guy who interviewed fault he didn't let Michio Kaku see the game and maybe show him the Mass Effect Codex to explain how science fiction worked in the games. Then he'd understand it. Cause he was only comparing it to things it sounded like.

Falcon Windblade Thats like saying that we are not allowed to speculate on things that haven't been discovered yet. I've seen Michio talk about teleporation and that doesnt exist in the real world. Besides, there are all sorts of theories that physics work differently in different universes or even different areas outside of our galaxy, perhaps one could speculate that there is in fact a universe with physics with a force like gravity but more manipulable that works just like eezo.

Correction: that's not how the mass effect force fields work. In mass effect, they use element zero (a made up element) to alter the mass of incoming objects in a way that reduces it's speed. They call them "Kenetic Barriers". Kenetic Barriers don't deflect objects, they simply slow them down to a stop by using the mass effect fields to make them heavier and thus kill their momentum. It's in the codex.
@runakovacs4759
@runakovacs4759 10 жыл бұрын
Eezo is not an element (Chemical element), it's just the human name for it. Element Zero, also known as "eezo", is a rare material that, when subjected to an electrical current, releases dark energy which can be manipulated into a mass effect field, raising or lowering the mass of all objects within that field. A positive current increases mass, a negative current decreases it. This "mass effect" is used in countless ways, from generating artificial gravity to manufacturing high-strength construction materials. Eezo is generated when solid matter, such as a planet, is affected by the energy of a star going supernova. The material is common in the asteroid debris that orbits neutron stars and pulsars Despite its name, it is not actually a chemical element. "Element zero" is merely the human nickname for this material
@benfields2118
@benfields2118 10 жыл бұрын
Dacino Hoihe Thanks for the correction. Your right. However, the main point I was trying to make was that mass effect force fields are unlike conventional science fiction ecause instead of simply deflecting objects, they alter their mass to slow them down to a stop. Hence the name "Kinetic Barrier". And no, Element Zero is not an element. It's a type of energy. Your absolutely right.
@benfields2118
@benfields2118 10 жыл бұрын
Dacino Hoihe So basically, the mass effect field in a kinetic barrier rapidly increases and decreases the projectile's mass until it looses momentum and stops, then falls to the ground (rather then direct deflection like this video suggests, probably because that's the more traditional type of force fields in the science fiction that Dr. Kaku probably grew up with, not the more modernized mass effect type).

Kinetic Barriers are the opposite to the weapons themselves...the weapons are using a block of tungsten where small particles are shaven off and accelerated using mass effect fields which are negated when "impacting" on the kinetic barriers

I think what's cool about Mass Effect is that if you accept that Element Zero exists, and that it can generate mass effect fields that increase or decrease an object's mass, everything in the games is possible. Artificial gravity exists because mass effect fields increase the mass of the spaceship or space station. Biotics are possible because they have Element Zero in their brains, and are able to trigger mass effect fields with the electrical current of their neurons. If humans discovered something like element zero actually existed, a lot of what happens in Mass Effect could be true.
@mars_j5479

+Nathan Mortenson Well he did say that we could harness negative matter which might change space and time. To control gravity, we need to change the space itself. Matter influenced space and that's why more massive object have stronger gravity. What negative matter does is to influence the space itself without the matter (even though it is called negative matter). I only wish that we discover it sooner, I really want to be a biotic myself.

dude element zero is simply a massless element (element one is hydrogen). photons and other electromagnetic radiation particles are also massless that's why they can travel at lightspeed. Even if we -discover- manufacture an element zero which is an atom with an atomic mass of 0 (impossible) we won't get FTL speeds because nothing goes faster than LS not even the massless particles. We also won't travel at LS unless we and our ship are completely made from element zero which is also impossible.

Plus something like resveratrol that can alter genetics to slow or even stop aging (resveratrol isn't proven to do that just yet) would possibly have to be used in pill form. And something to stop free radicals which are molecules that damage our body as we age. Not to mention we're only recently starting to use artificial organs and they're not 100% safe/viable yet. We have artificial limbs already but only to the extent of just helping the disabled move around. A way to stop or even slow aging would take decades to centuries from where we are now. I'm just gonna estimate and say that life-prolong advances in medicine and technology that double to triple your life span won't be until at least another 100-200 years.

He's shown in the past to simply be trying to get people all excited and consistently oversteps his area of expertise. I mean, if you look back before the end of 2012, "Dr." Kaku was telling everybody that the Mayans did in fact predict the end of the world (will the rest of the scientific community was saying that was just a misconception popularized by the media). Austin Clark There is a dangerous tendency among many scientists today where they base their experiments on results acquired through past experiments by other scientists. Why is this dangerous, you ask? The past "definitive" experiments are considered arbitrarily fact, when in truth there may have been a fault in its procedure or whatnot, so when the new experiment has results that differ from the old one, it is assumed that something must have been incorrect in the new one's procedure, when in fact it was the original that had the fault. This topic is discussed more thouroughly in "Cargo Cult Science" by Richard Feyman. So basically it both discounts and supports Dr. Michio Kaku and your reply. I hope this helps.

There are a few things they forgot to talk about: The omni-tool. The genophage. The ability of mass effect fields to lower the mass of vehicles. How the discovery of intact alien technology advances our technology by hundreds of years. (Michio Kaku evidently never took that into account) And finally.... the Reapers. ( I know, they're not man-made, but the difficulty of creating these 'god-like' machines must be incredible, and yes, I played the ME3 DLCs)

Why not ask something decent, like the Thanix Cannons for example, or do you not know enough of the lore to decently ask that? The Thanix cannons utilise molten metal which are fired at almost the speed of light and solidify as it is fired, thus impacting heavily when it hits. The ability to travel across space like in Mass Effect 2 is based around the technology used by civilizations far ahead that of Humanity, i.e the Reapers, sentient AI which live for hundreds of thousands of years at a time. Plus Humanity in the ME series only got to the star system traversing stage after 2148 which they found ancient Type 3 civilization files on Mars. That information led them to the Charon Relay just in the orbit of Pluto. So the question about being able to travel the Galaxy willy-nilly is fairly stupid due to the fact that even in 2140-ish, just getting Humans to Pluto was a struggle. It was only thanks to Alien technology that they could travel across the systems.

I dunno, holographic is near-future plausible too, but the thing is it's require a projector for whatever kind of energy they were using, either a physical ball (like the illusive man's little drone thing), or line-of-sight projectors that focus energy on one point. Thing is you'd need a miniaturised power source, the technology to float it, and a good reason to use holographic/etc. tech instead of something cheaper and more energy efficient like metals.
@FalconWindblader

***** It's distant future possible, not near. the kinda power source small yet powerful enough to power such stuff for long periods ain't gonna come in at least a century from now, the floating tech required to make them so damn maneuverable's nowhere near being developed, & making solids outta energy capable of dishing damage's for now, something entirely restricted in sci-fi. furthermore still, you missed one essential element - AI. one sophisticated yet small enough to function the ones seen in mass effect would probably require major breakthroughs in both physics & biology, & we too are nowhere near that.

For holographic: Red Dwarf. The lightbee that projects Lister's hologram. I know there's lots of inconsistency in how it actually works through out the series, but that idea is the closest I'm aware of to that. However, I agree that building drones out of physical materials is much more practical and feasible. It's also not so far off. Surveillance drones already exist, and they can be equipped with missiles for surgical strikes. The only thing is they're remotely operated. A combat drone wouldn't need a full fledged AI (Rise of the Machines anyone?), but some form of computer suite that included terrain and obstacle recognition capability, IFF, and targeting, and perhaps unit damage awareness would do. Even the IFF isn't strictly necessary. Someone else could paint the targets (maybe with a surveillance drone?) and the attack drone could take them.

For a video discussing science this one is very inaccurate to say the least. ME is full of unrealistic stuff. However they are talking about the CONCEPT. A biotic barrier (that actually differs from personal shielding) is unrealistic. Same goes for the extended forcefield that your biotic uses during the infiltration of the Collector base. However the concept of a personal shielding that works like the barrier and the concept of a mobile force-field are feasible. FTL is considered completely valid, FTL with eezo however, not likely.

Marqan I would say these technologies are unfeasible today, but who is to say they are unrealistic in the future? Compared to that kind of technology, like traveling across the galaxy pretty much instantly, we are like cavemen thinking about the internet. Yet the internet happened. I would even say that we are closer to that technology than cavemen are to the internet. Cavemen actually did not think about the internet. We, on the other hand, are already thinking about travelling to other stars, and some people are working on it. So no, I would not make the bold statement to say it is unrealistic. I just want to point out also that biotics in Mass Effect is not a kind of magic. It's simply a source of energy within organics which is amplified by a tech they call "amps". I don't remember all the codex texts, but I think it says a surgery is necessary to implant the amplifiers in the body for a biotic to tap that energy in a useful way. Such energy could exist. We might not have found it yet.

Nostripe361 Plus, from the Wikipedia article on "Warp Field": 'Subsequent calculations found that such a model would require negative mass, the existence of which has never been supported by any evidence, and prohibitive amounts of energy. However, it has recently been found that by changing the shape of the warp drive, much less negative mass and energy could be used, though the energy required is still many orders of magnitude greater than anything currently possible by human beings. NASA scientists have begun preliminary research on such technology.' So unless there's evidence, it can't and won't exist.

If trans galactic space travel was a feasible possibility, we would have been visited by other civilizations long time ago. There are lots of stars that are some millions years older than ours, so they had pretty long time to develop the technology. (I'm not including older stars than that, because I assume they are too different from our sun to evolve life. If not, the chance that aliens would have visited us increases several-fold.) It's just my opinion though, there is really no need to go spreading around.

In the first case, there would be at least some people who go to other cultures to learn (like our anthropologists), to rule (like our colonialists), to help or spread their religion (like our missionaries), etc, etc. I'm quite sure that *we* would make contact with extraterrestrial civilizations if we encountered them. In the latter case, there should be a normal distribution, witch means that approximately 50% of those civilizations would choose to visit us. Michio's crazy theories don't bother me. What bothers me is that he pretends like they're fact, when there's very little evidence for it. "High school text books say the universe is made out of atoms. Wrong." I know you're into string theory, but it's still called string "theory" for a reason. Not because it's wrong, but because it hasn't been proven yet. And what's with all this bullshit about being able to tell exactly how much of the universe is composed of a material we haven't even proven exists yet. He said himself they've never been able to detect dark matter. Also, humans making up 0.03% of the known universe. That number seems to high for just our planet. WTF is this shit? The idea of using telekinesis by controlling technology to do it for us with our minds seems pretty cool though, as well as plausible.

Dark matter and dark energy are not theories, those exist and have been proven to exist. String theory has very little to do with those things and he is only speculating that string theory could provide an explanation for their existence. It is true that string theory has very little evidence compared to other theories, but still keep in mind that a theory is not the same thing as a guess. A scientific theory is a model for how something works and the reason it is called a theory is usually because it requires certain assumptions to be made or it can't be applied to everything, but that doesn't mean it isn't true or it hasn't been proven. Gravity is a theory. Relativity is a theory, and yet we wouldn't have cell phones or GPS if relativity wasn't known to be true because our satellites are calibrated according to Einsteins equations. What he said about the universe being mostly composed of dark matter and dark energy is a proven fact, something that has been observed directly by gravitational lensing and the rotation of galaxies. Dark energy has been observed by the redshift of very distant objects. It sounds to me that you just don't know enough about what either of those things actually and are just assuming its space magic invented through someones theory. They are not, they are real things. It is true however that Kaku talks too much about his theory as if it is undoubtedly true. String theory does not have a lot of evidence and as beautiful as it is to have a "theory of everything" I am just not convinced that it is true.
@Phlowerchyld
@Phlowerchyld 10 жыл бұрын
mouseinmyhelmet I understand that a theory is not a guess. I understand that a lot of these theories have good information backing them. I understand that scientists are not idiots. I'm not doubting the existence of dark matter so much as I am doubting the scientists ability to tell exactly what percentage of the universe is composed of dark matter at this point. A lot of scientific theories are true on some level, but they haven't worked out everything yet. For Example: While evolution is proven to be real, perceptions on how humans evolved has changed a lot over the last few decades and will continue to change. They'll nail it eventually, but scientific theories generally take a few centuries to get their shit sorted out. So I'm saying I don't like him pretending that relatively recent information is proven fact. Hell, our current theories on gravity, relativity and quantum physics aren't working together right now. Which means that something is wrong about one of them and it is the reason scientists are looking for a theory to everything in the first place. I imagine that views on exactly how dark matter works and how much there is and how it came to be etc. will change a lot over the coming decades. So it seems to me that Michio's assumption to be able to tell the exact percentage of dark matter in the universe is a bit far fetched. Especially when he turns around and says that humans make up 0.03% of the known universe. That would mean humans alone have 1/766.66 of the mass of all of the known stars and planets (assuming the stars and planets make up 23% of the known universe like he said). 23/0.03 = 766.6666666666666666 cont. I'm not sure if we make up that much of Earths mass alone, not to mention every other star and planet in the known universe. If we're even talking about mass. He might have been referring to the amount of space humans take up, or perhaps both, he was quite vague. Either way the number he gave sounds ludicrous at best.

I suppose Kaku's degrees from Harvard (summa cum laude, top of his physics class) and Berkeley, 70 published papers, professorships, and textbooks are all pseudo-achievements as well? Yes, his particularly style of science promotion is cheesy, and gauche, but calling him a pseudo-scientist is not only a gross and ignorant injustice but also totally wrong, He's contributed more to science than you would ever be able to in a hundred lifetimes and should be revered as not only a world-leading scientist, but also someone that understands the need to promote science and make it accessible to people without formal scientific training, like yourself, hence the major "dumbing down". Also, Christoper Nolan is a fantastic director, popular with critics and the public alike, and another figure who understands the need to promote science, even without having come from a scientific background. As you obviously haven't got the message, his films exist in the SCIENCE fiction genre, and obviously require a degree of scientific plausibility, in order to suspend disbelief. To be honest, you just sound like a whiney tw*t who saw one of Christoper Nolan's films, didn't get it, so went "Waaaah!", before spitting out your pacifier and throwing your milk bottle at the tv.

Alright... Not sure if we can wait much longer. How long until we can send some archaeologists to Mars, and some miners to the moons of Pluto?
@jamieventress1100

Well people are going to be living on mars in the ne'er future so I don't see why archeologists can't go. As for Pluto that'd be significantly longer. Mass effect are probably right with their estimate.

It'll happen when humans will evaporate inner sins like greed and stop burning dead plants to develop sth that will lead to type 3 civilisation. Not nearer than that.

I might be a loner here, but I'm kind of sad the interviewer didn't discuss the actual science fiction of the game, discussing how everything was based on element 0 and the mass effect. The idea that passing a current through such a material would increase or decrease the local mass of the object.

The idea of biotics in modern context interests me. Using superconductors to control an object is indeed the closest we have to biotics.

I have a lot of respect for Michio Kaku for presenting complex concepts in a simple manner, thus making him an effective popularizer of science. And while I'm glad to see someone who's so positive and optimistic about the future, I think he might be a little bit too much so, and he seems awfully confident about String Theory even though there's little upholding it at this point.

You know when I say exactly everything he said, people will ridicule me and say I play too many videogames (which is undoubtly true), but this guy is famous for assessing science fiction and theorizing it into 'perhaps' science fact or a more realistic alternative. I'm jealous, Michio Kaku has the coolest job in the world.

Even in the ME universe though, Humans couldn't roam the galaxy or had many outposts until we discovered the Mass Relay in our solar system and was able to create an engine to react with it. It jumpstarted our technology and we quickly were on par with the other races.

It doesn't matter how miniscule the mass of an object is, it still takes an infinite amount of energy to accelerate any amount of mass to light speed.
