Important fact to remember when watching Valerian - the (French) comics came before Stars Wars and George Lucas incorporated these ideas into Star Wars. So it's not that Valerian is trying to be Star Wars for a new generation. Valerian was the original and Star Wars used it to come up with their story. Star Wars was the copy, not the original.

am i the only one who is really annoyed by the fact that the alpha station has only travelled 700 million miles. like really that is a miniscule distance, it is literally less than the avg distance between the earth and saturn. and they claim it has grown over hundreds of years, so even if it only left earths orbit it would have travelled at only 356 m/s, right now the iss is orbiting the earth at 7.6km/s so 21 times as fast.
@ReddwarfIV
@ReddwarfIV 7 жыл бұрын
+zokr - I think its understandable. The ISS where it is would drop out of orbit within a couple of decades without regular boosting. Moving it further out into the solar system would be fine if you wanted to make it bigger and you had the kind of casual interplanetary travel shown in _City Of A Thousand Planets_. Why _would_ they move it to another star system or let it fly into interstellar space? Or are you saying the script implies its in another star system but the writers don't understand how big space is?

"Why would they move it to another star system or let it fly into interstellar space?..." they literally said in the movie thats what they did with the station.

+Justin Jacobs - I literally said in my post "Or are you saying the script implies its in another star system but the writers don't understand how big space is?", you just had to click "Read More".
@Reazintful
@Reazintful 7 жыл бұрын
i missed the "read more" but its obvious thats what was implied, the narrator talks about it being shot into deep space on its own and the leader of earth bidding it farewell and good luck on its journey like hes never going to hear from it again, yet 700 million miles is a drive down to the gas station in this movie, dont think the script writers understood how short of a distance 700m miles really is in space.

Well, if one assumes that it is just typical Hollywood "millions vs billions" screw up, then the station would've traveled 7530 AUs. It's still not far enough to be in another solar system, but at least they're definitely in the interstellar space by now.

The movie Valerian is actually very close to the cartoon of the same name which came in the 60s. I remember reading those and being so impressed. It is actually directly inspired by Metropolis for some elements. But it has inspired all the sci-fi to this day and even the Star Treck motion picture. The movie came after the others but all its concepts come from before.
@DarthBiomech
@DarthBiomech 6 жыл бұрын
I think that the main problem with this, besides human characters, was exactly that it FELT like it was from the 60s. Many plot elements were clearly outdated, the "obvious cannibal natives, only they're aliens so that's not racist" would be perfect example. The film leered to "who cares about common sense if it's pretty?" fantasy stuff too much IMO.

Hey, any chance you could cover some sci-fi movies that aren't currently airing? For example, I'd love it if you could give your take on movies like Moon (2009), Sunshine(2007), Primer (2004), etc.? They're some of my favorites.

The Star Wars parallels make sense - when the original trilogy came out the creator of the Valerian comics was apparently "furious" that SW had several things in common with his comics.

Kinda sad you didn't mention anything about the opening sequence of the movie with the humans slowly expanding the Alpha station and meeting all those alien races over the decades and slowly growing tired from it. I feel like that was one of the best scenes they ever did for the movie.

I've been reading and re-reading Valérian comic books since the 70's and I can tell you that the movie was not only made for kids, it also was made for the fans of the series. Your analysis of the movie was lacking this consideration.

It could have been a spectacular movie...plot had a few holes...but visually spectacular and worth multiple views... BUT....i'd rather watch it in another language with subtitles....that main actor is so forced..and the connection between them...' the love'?....just fuck it off....it's like they got their love ideal from Twilight....( where's mah bucket)

Hey Andy, did you ever read the comics? AMAZING stuff, really shaped my childhood. This travesty of a movie pales in comparison, and the love story is really great and funny throughout the series. Star Wars and other properties took a lot from Valerian et Laureline. P.S WHY DIDNT THEY CAST CLIVE OWEN AS VALERIAN? He is PERFECT and is even IN THE MOVIE. ugh

Visually, it’s kind of a feast. Pretty compelling. It does draw you in. But the planets in the sky. Andy’s right about that. And I think the film just tried to be too big and tried to do too much. All the extraneous scenery and characters and furniture kind of muddled the plot. A lot of it was just distracting and frequently interrupted the pace of the story, which is the most important part.

Saw this movie and it was boring. What it was was a re-make of the "Fifth Element" which was a good movie. In fact, elements of that movie were in this movie. There was chemistry between Bruce Willis and Framke J. unlike the childlike interaction between the two leads in this movie. This movie bombed for good reason.

the visuals are great, the screenplay on the other hand is a train wreck which is why the characters fail. Their dialogues are terrible. It also has little to do with the comics where the concepts were even crazier (where Valerian and Laurelin are time agents responsible for stuff happening both in space and time and everyone sitting comfortable at home)

If you mean the two actors playing the leads, then I agree 💯. The two actors had NO chemistry. I’ve seen Dane DeHaan be very good in a couple of things and excellent in a couple of other things. But in this… ZERO CHARISMA, as Elliot from ET would say. DeHaan was OK as kind of a romantic lead to Daniel Radcliffe in Kill Your Darlings, but as straight romantic action adventure guy, I just didn’t believe it. He’s got a good voice. Distinct. I’m sure he’s done voice work, but visually, just not attractive enough.
