If I recall correctly from the books, the punishment for using atomics against people was all other houses using their own nukes to basically commit a nuclear holocaust against the home planet of the offending house. Paul used the weapons against some rocks, not people, so it was perfectly legal.

Since laser + shield = nuclear explosion I wonder if these weapons actually are just a container for a laser to fire at a shield projected inside the tube.

Interesting how, after the fall of House Atreides the Harkonnens didn't turn their attention to the still missing Atreides nuclear stockpile, knowing it could get into the hands of smugglers or even the Fremen etc.

@@Janx14 laser plus sheild created an uncontrolled explosion on the scale of a nuke. It was too random to he trusted.

This! In the book I enjoyed the description of the Sandworms being 'grumpy' after being ridden for a lengthy trip.

Isn’t the skin flaps the way the sand worm breathes? They close up when the creature goes underground so I assume that by holding them open the sand worm won’t submerge.

Im not the maker of the video or course, a black sun wouldnt be black unless is always another stellar body in front or the sun is long dead, the sun we see in dune 2 must had a dim red opaque light sort of like matte painting sweeping the landscape, since the black body peaked in the infrared spectrum, the planet would be very cold or even icy as well, constructions would be black to contain the minimun heat radiated by the dim sun as well, something we didnt see in the movie, plants and wildlife would be very dark coloration as well and probably plants havr moving parts to follow the light frencuencies, probably open up more at night to recieve reflected light from the sun from one of the planet moons (if there is one), the actual science way will be way more interesting than the artistic representation in my view

Not science-related, but I thought the fact that the movie Harkonnen had a "black sun" might also have been inspired by the neo-Nazi symbol of the same name, "Schwarze Sonne" in German. Another hidden reference to that they are meant to be perceived as a deeply fascist society, maybe. It's not in the source material, though. Frank Herbert rather uses words like "baroque" in the books to hint at the decadence of the Harkonnen upper court. It is hinted that the much larger rest of the Harkonnen society, meanwhile, lives in squalor.

True. Want to add that my initial response was ill-informed. There apparently went some deeper thought into the infrared filming and the black sun and connection to the books than I had thought.

@@Irrazzoyep, I red the dune books 1 trough 6, didnt like them much as scifi, more like just fantasy space opera with real life political dilema, that's the issue with projecting real life issues into a 20k year story telling, you won't have the same issues most likely, not if you are going interstellar and are part of an almost galactic (so far in the books) framework. A society like the harkonnen wouldn't work because they will always have infightning because of constant tyrany, that wouldn't allow for the consistent development of usefull techs to make hospitable planets or methods of transport more efficient, that in turn wouldn't be nicely view by the other houses which in time will probably just remove the harkonnens from space travel if they don't fix their issues making them stuck in one dim red planet until they behave

The way i interpreted it, it's very hard to not be resonant to a certain degree. The sand walk is a step you can remember to help you do it without flaw, since if you unknowingly get into a rythm, you die very easily. Maybe the sand walk isn't the easiest or most optimal, but it's the safest and one you can learn and use for hours without mistakes

@davepatois297 resonant frequencies are VERY specific and precise. They are dependent on the molecular structure and therefore have to be almost exact. Any variation will keep them from building up. Rhythmic patterns are a different thing. Certainly, a living being could be responsive to that. But the idea that anyone walking or running generates a resonant frequency that amplifies is pretty far fetched, especially in sand where the density is variable and sounds would dissipate quickly

Yes! ... My mind is running wild, maybe fungus? Oxygen can also be broken down from heavier elements. The worm might be farting compounds using CO2 and something else? Methane is CH4. Something would have to grab the Carbon somehow.

The sandworms' metabolism generates oxygen as a byproduct. I'm not sure how, but they eat sand and generate a huge amount of internal heat, so maybe they're breaking down the sand somehow?

@@Kai-fb1olI’ve heard there’s microbes that the sandworms eat like whales that gives them their energy and subsequently oxygen. But the entire ecosystem of Arrakis relies on the worms. It would not work without them
