Riddle: Scientists find a way to make ships truly unsinkable Reality: Scientists find a way to make a small piece of metal unsinkable but it is so time, energy and financially expensive to produce that it will likely never be available commercially and certainly not in ship sized quantities.

@@hotcyclonis yeah but a battery and a literal hull of a fucking ship is a farcry aint it? Battery cells need to be thin too, thats perfect for graphene. The first thought I had is if there is a possibility of having the bottom of the ship designed where the water is designed to flow in one direction and would that help propel the ship making it much more fuel efficient. Of course going backwards or sideways would be less efficient but given the ships travel forward probably 99+% of the time I'm guessing that would be a fine trade off. Would it be possible to use the laser to groove the metal on the bottom of the ship to repel water towards the back of the ship in a way that may move the ship or give it mush less surface tension where the traditional power house needed much less force to move the ship?... This stuff is pretty cool. Sounds like a game changer. Although I'm still waiting for all the different graphene products. Would like to see these great discoveries move a lot faster!

Patterns could be etched into metal to reduce drag on ship hulls & airplanes. Trapped air would be a passive way to effectively reduce fuel & drag on both by trapping the air at the surface. This would allow water or air to “slip” over the surface, thus reducing fuel & drag.

No ship is unsinkable but I can tell you if built properly they will stay afloat for a long time even with massive damage, minus breaking the Keel. First US Navy ship I served on, Decommissioned in 1998, expended as a target. They bombed it for 16 hours. It took 4 more hours to sink. We closed all water tight hatches and doors as part of Decommissioning process.

The Titanic was unsinkable, it caught fire the week before the voyage. They painted it over and turned a ship around at the dock before it set off not to cause concern. The iceberg hit the exact spot where the ship was damaged by fire. If they didn't rush the voyage, and took time to repair it, the ship wouldn't have sunk ever after hitting that iceberg.

Imagine your comfortably in your cabin sealed laser treated 20 foot unsinkable Grady white … when in the distance emerges a unexpected and terrifying 150 foot rogue wave - only this time, rather then panic and be filled with fear , all you do is confidently hatch down and seal the water proof cabin - and then BOOOOM - a 150foot rogue wave with millions of pounds of pressure pushes you and your gradywhite hundreds of feet underwater -- just to have your boat and you go from submarine to shooting up to the surface like trying to hold a beach ball underwater -- truly amazing would a unsinkable boat be Truly the future and truly remarkable - It seems we need to invent a way to mainstream these lasers so that production costs would be more affordable The applications are endless

Really fascinating metal and all. But that won't keep a ship from sinking. Keep in mind that wood floats up too, but wooden ships still sink. Also in ships you have to have the center of mass low, so the ship don't tilt too much or capsize, meaning you need to put wight at the bottom to raise its water line. Even with this new material if you fill the ship with water, it still can sink, because the surface area of the metal is far out done by the mass the water takes up with the open space.

the titanic sank because they used substandard steel in its construction that was half the strength it should have been, bulkhead doors that would have prevented further flooding blew out and allowed the water to progress throughout the ship, it wasn't a fault in the design, it was a fault in the materials and construction.

Same as wood, it also cannot sink, but still, some wooden ships did sink in fact, because of their heavy freight and ballast.
