Hi everyone! I was one of the majority of people that was let down by the Alien 3 movie that we got. I wanted to take a look at some early scripts and see if there were any ideas that would've made a better film. Lets take a look at the Alien 3 script by William Gibson to see if this take would have been better for the Alien franchise. Its surely better for Newt and Hicks!

Rock n Roll! I read this script ages ago (the 90's) at Drew's Script O Rama, and thought it was incredible. See how Gibson neatly follows up on all the ideas from the previous films (like Bishop's study of the Alien in the first sequel), gives Newt the ending we all wanted for her... making Ripley's heroism meaningful, but creates a film that can stand on its own as an entry point. No wonder Michael Biehn was so angry. Talented, intense guy. He deserved better.

I watched Alien 3 again the other day (Assembly cut) and I actually think it's a lot better than I thought it was.

My theory is people have set their expectations low for the new movies they forgive 3 for the pile of shit that it was, and still is. Even the Assembly Cut can't save it. Once you've seen an alien get suplexed in a WWF match with a Predator, anything that's not as dumb looks great I guess.

Dunno man, aliens was just generic action bullshit, not a horrow/thriller movie, it killed the vibe. Alien 3 of course had its plotholes, but by no means was it any less than the others.

Alien 3 is a a well polished turd. Its foundations are crap but direction, sets, designs, music and nice moments give it some weight

In that case Aliens is a crappily polished turd; generic everything using Aliens as an excuse. It has literally no depth outside of Ripley finding her long dead daughter on Newt, and even then they didn't put that into the theatrical release.

Sounds like this script would have made a great film. I've read a few of Gibson's fiction works and he's a great writer certainly when it comes to future tech and the social paradigms that often follow. So this is the sequel (3rd in the series) that would have been if this script and its corresponding story had been selected? Sounds good so far and very compelling. Can already see the main conflict being set up in the early stages of Act 1. Certainly looking forward to seeing Alien: Covenant! Its sad that the Neil Blomkamp film never made it to fruition. It would have been great to see Ripley, Newt and Hicks reprise their roles for a modern sequel in the series. Great job on the video, thank you for your effort. Looking forward to the second part. I hope the studios are paying attention. :-)

Just start Alien 3 with Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop setting out to find the origin planet of the Aliens in an attempt to exteriminate them all once and for all. Using Bishop to hack into the Weyland computer to search if any other information on the Alien craft they found back in Alien 1 in the 57 years she was first asleep was uncovered. Weyland could have found a planet with similar craft and they could begin their search there, finding out that Weyland have also sent terraformers to this planet too. As more clues turn up about the origin of the Alien your franchise would be able to extend out even further instead of killing it off completely because Ripley no longer wanted to continue. Newt now having no parents or relatives of her own, would then grow up to be the successor of Ripley and become the main character of the series for a newer generation.

I'm suprised they never ran with it. Seems like a missed oppurtunity to keep the expansion of the series open for years to come. Killing off your main character with no way to continue without silly cop out stories [Alien Ressurection] seems like a poor executive decision, especially considering the money they made off the first 2 flims.

I like the idea of Newt's character being evolved beyond of just being the screaming little girl that has to be saved, but the whole "find the origin planet of the Aliens in an attempt to exteriminate them all once and for all" just sounds incredibly dumb and ridiculous. Alien is not just some bug that can be sprayed away, and in a planet full of them the only thing that you would get is your death sentence, and even if just a few people can annihilate an entire planet of xenomorphs, it would be the most terrible thing because then you pretty much threw everything that even mattered in the franchise in the garbage by making your characters some super alien exterminators despite all the horror from past films. Quite honestly I'm thankful all of this, Cameron and Blomkamp are far away from Alien, the last thing we need is another generic action movie.

Hey! It (Alien 2.5 let s name it:) still can be shot with an ending which Sulaco, Newt, Hicks are involved. And it can explain the facehugger egg also.

I've always hated the artist renditions of Hicks post-Aliens with half his face being so visibly melted/deformed due to the acid spray he was exposed to. Although the movie does show that he suffered from some skin burns on his cheekbone and forehead (see: imgur.com/LgdppeC), it was definitely nowhere near as bad as the extreme "Two Face" look that artists usually want to give the character. Hick's charisma was part of his charm and helped with developing a relationship with Ripley, but making him look like a grotesque comic book villain just destroys all that. My 2 cents...

I kinda agree with the studio, Alien and Aliens are iconic movies, there's no way they could've got 3 iconic movies in a roll, they knew it was bound to fail because the expectations were high, in my opinion they should have stopped at the 2 one.

Hey man. Thanks for the video. The following is not against you... Why is everyone still hung up about the whole production thing behind Alien 3. It was a great movie. That said, I am a great fan of the Alien franchise, and seemingly the only one who actually likes all 4 films. Each of them has it's own appeal, it's own mood or tone, none is a copy of the others, and all manage to keep the franchise going without re-hashing what made the last one good. Think of other franchises that get by on repeating the same things again and again. I'm looking at you Force Awakens... I honestly don't care what production problems they had while making Alien 3. What speaks to me is the end product. And that end product does have some very fine acting, great editing, spot-on cinematography, it transports you from wherever you are watching straight into "Fury", it had me on the edge of my seat, the scenes are dark and some genuinely scary... In my opinion, a worthy entry in the line-up. I repeat myself here: I think all 4 films were absolutely brilliant, I love the fact that they are all distinctly different, and I am glad we didnt get a flop like we did with the continuations of Starship Troopers. Also glad we did not have to watch people trying to destroy some variation of the Death Star for umpteenth time.

S Jackson I agree with you completely man people bitch over Resurrection despite the fact it brought back more aliens and action and did new stuff like cloning and swimming aliens. To me the Alien franchise is good the way it is and Resurrection gave the series a more proper ending.

I think Alien 3 Bladerunner like concept would be pretty cool. Fighting aliens on Earth would be awesome but as long as Ripley is there as well, not just in stasis the whole film but actually helping Hicks.

the aliens invading earth could be a really cool idea, 2 invasions would be ideal maybe. the first, a small invasion that's repelled, and a second one, ramped up on steroids after earth is more prepared. they'd just screw it all up with lame politics though these days. it'd be all about feminism and how dumb and evil republicans are.

I would enjoy William Gibson's movie. I think it was ambitious and I think an exciting direction. Ultimately, I think it was a lack of money that kept it from being realized on the big screen. Incidentally, this story is somewhat similar to Mark Verheiden's Alien continuation for Dark Horse. This is a fun read if you want some of this kind of action. I am one of the few that actually enjoyed Alien 3 (it was actually the first of the series to touch upon the xenomorph utilizing its host's DNA and characteristics), but the Alien comic by Verheiden was definitely something I would have enjoyed seeing on the big screen.

Nick Palmer it could have been pretty cool , but it will never happen I'd really like to see fincher return to Alien now he has so much credibility he would be able to make to movie he wanted I stead of having to roll over for the studios that just wanna make bucks , Cameron's Aliens is a fan boys version of Alien & the studio as far as I know did try n change Cameron's movie here n there but he held his ground n made the movie he wanted & we all love him for it , but poor fincher had to take the wheel of n already crashing car n I think he did a pretty good job with the movie considering the studio & this is a quote from a studio executive " we set out to make a release date & not a movie "

gibson is a horrible screen writer though (seriously.. check out some of his screenplays like his 2 x files episodes or johnny mneumonic... really bad and cheesy) so in my opinion some of his ideas for alien 3 were interesting but someone else should write them if they did go into production.

The four films being so different is the strength of that series in my opinion: and i'm a big fan of both 3 and resurrection. 3 is the best one of them all imho. well, there's me. i can't believe you'd have liked to have seen them try and the repeat the first one again and again.

I think that if this version Alien ³ had been realized, it would surely have triumphed becoming a hit at the time. I think the Fox executives and producers were complete stupid and blind in having rejected this extraordinary script, Ridley Scott or James Cameron had directed this film and would have done an excellent job turning it into another masterpiece like the first two films. He would have earned more money at the box office than the other Alien 3 version won and he had concluded in a successful trilogy or tetralogy. In addition, I also really liked the idea of putting Hicks and Bishop as the two film stars played by Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen, would have been similar to the film "Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw" But with aliens, I even think that the carees of both actors Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen would have taken off and climbed as foam. And if David Fincher had made this script it would have been his biggest directorial debut. It's just my opinion.

what many people don't realize is that every 7 years a property is up for grabs by other studios which is the only reason we have Aliens, Alien 3 and Res and Aliens Vs. Pred films. Luckily Jim Cameron was there to make Aliens but we were not so fortunate for sequels and spinoffs. Fox did a similar move with Fantastic 4. They don't want to make a film good enough to warrant a sequel but they just want to put something out to keep the rights.

This version of the script isn't perfect, but I think there's good ideas in there. The UPP is an interesting idea, as is the idea of a "xenomorphic arms-race".

That film was cancelled due to Alien Covenant making very few at the box office. (It was going to happen) it was going to to be made by Neil BottomKemp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie). *Pretty sure I spelled that wrong. He even got Sigourney Weaver on board. There's concept art out there for the film. It was going to retcon Alien 3 & 4. It would have been set from 20-30 years after the Aliens. The best thing about it is that Newt and Hicks would've been Alive. Also, it was going to be a one time thing. It was not going to be a whole trilogy like with Star Wars. Lastly, the title would've been Alien 5 or Alien Awakening. Why it was Cancelled? Around the time Chappie was being made was when the script for Alien 5 was being made. The plan was to release it around 2015 (It would've been the first time that we got a Star Wars and a Alien movie in the same year) That's when Ridley Scott said that he was going to make a sequel to Prometheus (Covenant). So, the Studio, Fox. Waited to see how successful Covenant was going to do. It only made around 240-250 million world-wide. It's budget without advertisement was 90-95 million. So, the production for Alien 5 waited until Scott was done with his vision. But, Fox got nervous and Alien 5 just stopped being in semi pre-production. Also, it may have gotten cancelled due to Disney buying out Fox. So, the main reason it got cancelled was Ridley Scott. Cause he just assumed that just cause he made the first that the franchise is his. He just didn't want for Neil BottomKemp to steal his thunder. (Also, when Scott was planning the final chapter of his prequel trilogy he was going to name the third film Alien Awakening. So yeah he even stole the title of Neil BottomKemp's film) There is still a chance this gets made under Disney. If I was Disney I would make it. But, they might wait for the show to release and see how the general audience reacts to it. If it's good we may see Alien 5 and Scott's ending to his prequels. If the show is bad, let's just say we could expect a reboot in 5-15 years from now.

The version this KZfaqr talked about, would of been great! Much better than the Film. It's disappointing how the Directors and Producers wanted to have completely new things for this film, there is clearly nothing wrong with using some parts from the previous films! As long as the story works and makes sense it would be a great film! Not having a explanation for how the two Face Huggers got on board, just destroys the rest of the film, but yet again they thought about leaving up to the audience! Lambert's death not being shown was great because it left it up to your imagination? But with all the Alien 3 theories none of them worked because of such a bad job the Directors and Producers did for this film! The Alien 3 [Original script] story is great and all, it could of been the replacement for Alien Resurrection with the third film connecting it! Alien Resurrection was the search for more money.

I think this is a cool plot, I love all the alien films, books and comics and love all the different ideas and stories it would be great to see this version as a film or a book I just wish there was a lot more!! and really hope after covenant they stay with the David/Engineers storyline I'm loving it and would hate fox to abandon it and start a new one as I've heard they may do.

the whole 'cold war' alien concept seems really interesting. I'd like to see some of that element with the prequels. massive spoiler about the latest film. for example, it would be interesting to see both humans as well as engineers pursuing David as the Android works to destroy both species. I believe there are still engineers left and David knows exactly where they are. the ones he killed on Paradise were very primitive and imperfect compared to the onces we saw in Prometheus.

Dark Horse had a comic series based right on after Aliens events. I thought at the time it was one of the original script left over from the Alien 3 we know.

I may be in the minority, but I love A3. I think it's one of the most underrated horror films of the 90's and a perfect finale to the franchise. Hicks was fucked up at the end of Aliens. What good would he have been in a 3rd film? And I don't want to see another little damsel in distress with Newt having to be saved from an Alien yet again. That worked great for Aliens, but I just don't need to see that again. I loved the idea of Ripley stranded on this prison planet with criminals and no weapons having to play cat and mouse with this creature. I loved the focus of more gore and violence . I love the look and the atmosphere. i just don't understand the hate this film gets . i really don't

I read this script online years ago. It might have been better then Alien 3. One of my biggest issue with this script is that feels like it is ripping off the DNA assimilation aspect of The Thing. The Alien was turned into an Alien/Thing hybrid and it just sat wrong with me.

A3 was just like a forced attempt to end the series. I just cant believe who came up to the idea of killing all main characters from the prequel? One could change A3 to a way better movie by letting Newt and Hicks survive, involving the Company much earlier and maybe focusing on a fight between the factions: inmates (+ Ripley Crew) vs. Company vs. Alien.

Alien 3 isn't a bad film. It just wasn't as good as it could have been. Alien was fantastic, and then Aliens was a great followup, but then Alien 3 killed the boner. My biggest letdown was when Hicks and Newt were killed off. Hell, even within the Alien 3 script they would have made the story better.

For me the story should of picked up on LV426, wayland had the coordinates of the downed alien ship and we dont know how far away it was from hadelys hope so could of remined intact after the explosion at the end of aliens and the writers could of taken the story anyway they wanted from there. Another thing that could of been written in would be the invasion of hadleys hope, its something i never understood as one alien emerged from Nutes dad on the station but how did that devolop into the entire colony being over run, did the lone alien bring back eggs from the alien ship? was the first alien a queen? did other colonists return to the alien ship after Nutes dad returned to hadelys hope? So many plot lines could of opened up but instead we got alien 3.

Alien 3 wasn't a bad film. I still watch it from time to time. The real issue is the abomination they called alien resurrection - way to nearly kill a franchise guys! They'd have got a lot more mileage if they'd used the books by S. and S. Perry for inspiration. While they didn't do this with the AVP films either, you can see that they at least read those books from the interactions between the main character and the predator in the first film (e.g marking her face with acid after she gets a kill, making her a spear and shield out of a dead alien, etc).

fractalboy oh shut up! Alien Resurrection was better than 3 no excuses Alien 3 was the one that nearly killed the franchise had they gone with William Gibsons version your whining over Resurrection wouldn't have exist. I would rather the Alien franchise end ridiculously with Resurrection than depressingly like 3. Ressurrection had much more Xenomorphs in it.

Beautiful idea!!! What a shame it has never been done, it could have been great! I mean really GREAT, much spectacular then even Cameron's Aliens! Wow the idea of space communists is somewhat really luring!

If they let current day David Fincher direct an Alien film and hire better writers, he'll knock it out of the fucking ballpark. Reason being the studios have a lot more faith in him now (and they should, he's amazing)

I remember reading this script years ago. while some of it was just stupid there were a lot of interesting ideas, it's too bad they didn't work more on the script to iron out the flaws and remove some of the silly ideas as it would have been a great follow on from aliens.

I think this is the one the studios should have gone with. The "Prison Planet" which by the way was a duplicate Earth (gravity/air/water/etc), just seamed to be too contrived. Plus the audiences had invested a lot into the charachters of Hicks, Newt and even Bishop, and them being wiped out of the film a the very begining, always looked like a way of saving money. This could have been a really good sequel to the sequel.......

Gibson's story is way more interesting and complex than the actualized Alien 3. I did enjoy Alien 3, but yeH, I would have loved to see Gibson's version realized.

As for the question of how did a face hugger end up on the sulaco? Well, the alien Queen could have laid a few eggs on that drop ship before she popped out of it. Also I think the Queen could have survived being blown out of the air lock and maybe found her way back to the ship and left some eggs.

The only issue there is that he already disconnected from her egg sac by the time she was on the sulaco. Ridley Scott did say the alien in covenant at the end of the movie that fell to the ground most likely survived and healed up, but...that fall, wouldve been from so high up, that she should go splat in my opinion. Of course, if you count the aliens colonial marines game in your movie canon, there was another queen on lv 426 I think.

@@scifiexplained well, the queen could've orbited the opposite direction the Sulaco before the Sulaco encountered her again. Because she lost her egg sack maybe she couldn't lay eggs fast enough before her acid blood started the fire that caused their cryotubes to be evacuated. I think it's plausible. Besides, if she fell back to lv426 she would've burned up in the atmosphere before hitting the ground .

Can anyone explain why in Aliens the Colonial Marines were in a hypersleep on their way to LV426. If they are on a "rescue mission" why would they be in a hypersleep? Wouldn't they need to be there as quickly as possible?

I'd speculate that the colonial marines have ships on standby around nearby stars,to ensure quick response times. When a mission arises, a ship automatically heads to the mission location and wakes the crew from stasis.

There isn't things like Warp Drive or Hyperspace in the Alien Universe. When the Marines departed, LV426 had sent a distress transmission. When the Marines arrived Months later (or was it two years? I forget) LV426 was already over run by Xenomorphs.

You know they could probably still make this movie and add the twist about maybe the other 2 movies were dreams that Ripley had while in hyper sleep? Or maybe some type of time travel that changed events and caused an alternate time line?

I don't know about that, but as I've grown older I've noticed that I barely even feel like I'm in reality sometimes and sometimes I feel like I Don't know how to act in different situations when I'm working a new job or something. people are so different, especially young people these days. ...so it would be kind of cool to address some of the PTSD and memory issues that a character like Ripley, newt, and the marine dude would likely have. it could at least be addressed to occupy a few minutes of screen time to add a lot more realism for older people. making things seem real is a big key to making a good movie

Once the original story is told - any new movie is bound to just repeat itself - with less and less appeal. In this case, the second movie was just different enough to be enjoyable - but after that, there really was no place to go with the ideas. In effect, the story just becomes a TV series - albeit on a large screen.

This was an amazing vid. I recall the Gibson script being discussed briefly in the extras on the Alien 3 blu-ray but not in this depth. It sounds pretty good. Is the script up on the internet for public consumption? Would love a read of it.
