If you are looking for a jointer/planer combination machine and you need something thats a bit more robust than the hobby machines but are still limited in space and power take a look at the fs41e. I have had it for six months now and its seen thousands of board feet and I am very happy with it. The change over between modes is super quick and easy and the faster speed route has really increased my efficiency. the machine came finely calibrated and required zero tuning. I ordered mine with a helical head which provides an incredible cut quality finish. The machine is designed around the european guard and the equipped pork chop guard is the only weakness but at the same time, its fine and works. hopefully Canada will rethink the euro guard one day. thanks for watching

Hey man, thanks for the video. I have an a3-31 in good shape but not perfect shape and it’s starting to need adjustment attention. Pretty new machine. Upgrading to an scm fs52es with 10hp/3ph and phase converter next year after I extend the shop. Excited!

Great video dude! I have done tons of research on A3-31 and everyone is drinking hammer cool-aid "German engineering". After seeing your video I am going with SCM 12" planer/jointer. Also, I have noticed the fence is actually controlled by a large pipe/shaft on SCM and a flimsy grooved plate on A3-31

The fence connection on the scm was a big part of why I bought the machine.

@@plexuswoodworks1771 I don't need 16 inches, and I just checked that the 12 inch model doesn't have the same fence as the 16. Also it will not have a digital gage which is a bummer

@@noname-nu5fn The 12'' model doesn't have the same fence but the machine i used before had that fence and i had zero problem with it.theres a stiffening rod that supports it past the cutter and it works very well

So the mobility kit only moves it from left to right. If you wanted to push it to the wall..and away from the wall...can you do this or you have to go side to side only? Also, can you please tell me what the total depth is of the machine. I know you said you need 16 inches behind it but what is the total depth please. I have my current jointer under a long workbench that I push in and pull out as needed. Want to get this machine but want to see if it will still fit under the same space. Thank you in advance for your time.

hello friend, thanks for your in-depth review, because until today, there are hardly any videos like yours about SCM machines. I would like to ask you how everything has been going with the machine so far? any problem? How accurate is the machine? This last point is the one that interests me the most. Keep it up and thank you.

Thanks for checking out the video. I know before i bought it I couldnt find anything on the model. Ive alot of hours on the machine now, Ive ran material as big as 10' 16''x4'' to make large tables and the machine just keeps going smooth as ever. it arrived perfectly in tune with flat tables and fence and has stayed true all this time. The thickness planer mode is great too. when i first got it i checked it and it was .001 thou from one side to the other and thats just fine with me. the gauge was spot on as well. so far zero problems. I do wish i bought the bigger machine with a phase converter as Im running 12 to 14 heavy material often. I think its a great sturdy machine and im super happy with it. cheers

Nice review. In the process of deciding if it's worth moving (almost 300 miles) the older 16 in SCMI jointer and SCMI 20 inch planer (both 3 phase) or sell and switch to this. Realistically we only used the full 20 inch width of the planer to put through multiple pieces at the same time. Question though....Do the jointer infeed and outfeed tables lay perfectly flat or do you see issues with clipping or or not getting the edges straight, needing adjusting etc. due to the pivot feature? Secondly it looks like the fence moves easily. Our old 16 in jointer is a bear to move, I'm guessing they improved that.

Thanks for the review. I bought one a month ago because of your review vs the hammer. I am setting up a space for it in the shop now. What size breaker does it require? I have the 4.8 ho single phase too.

Greetings, you're right, not many reviews on KZfaq about it. I just bought the fs41es, I hope I'll have it in couple of days. My question is that as I'm working alone, by myself, is it good investment in time and quality to use a powered feeder with the jointer? - I'll cost me about $1,000. Please, advice. Kind regards, Wael

Have you received it yet? The FS41es is what i'm looking at, too. That has the table lift up in one motion compared to this split motion top, right?

While I personally don't like combination machines it's pretty obvious that the engineering with SCMI is better than Felder. They do a far better fence assembly for a start and without a rigid fence assembly you are screwed. They definitely have way better tolerances on their castings too. Felder is diabolically bad on that score.

Are you having any snipe on the planer mode? This model has interested me since the length of jointer beds is closer to what I am used to
@plexuswoodworks1771
@plexuswoodworks1771 3 жыл бұрын
None that isn’t user error! The planer mode works really well and i don’t really worry about snipe with smaller pieces anymore. When planning 2-3 meter rails I still need to be on it though. I’m really happy with it and if you haven’t got 3 phase I think it’s the best option from what I found. I’m going to do another video where I’ll show more of the actual result of the machine.

Jointers should never have "snipes" if the infeed tables are adjusted correctly. Now a planer is another thing. IE: MOST planers cause snipes. The cause is: both rollers are not always both pushing down on the stock. And that is when the stock end, is no longer under the infeed roller. This tends to push the stock up and thus snipe; especially on long stock. The way to stop snipe on Joiners is; adjust the infeed table correctly. The way to stop snipe on planers is: when the stock is no longer under the infeed roller, lift the stock until the cut is done. It works well. Try it. The following link will show it better: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o66WnbaS2bGthIU.html

When you where experiencing the bearing like noise in the planner could you tell me what you did to reduce the noise. i am experiencing a louder bearing like noise when i run the planer head. the machine has not done a lot of work so i don't think its the bearings.

Where the feeding rollers go in to the sides shoot a little lube in there and see if it makes a difference. That’s what Mine was and it fixed it completely. It was getting real loud.

Thanks for review. So does this machine comes adjust to straight cut? Or does it also makes spring joint? Is there a way to adjust it one or another way easily? Really considering to buy one. Thanks for reply.
@plexuswoodworks1771
@plexuswoodworks1771 Жыл бұрын
Mine came set up for a straight cut I believe. It’s hard to tell Some times as I mostly make 10’ tall and up doors and generally (technique willing) I get straight boards after jointing. I don’t think any combo machines adjust easily From a straight to a spring joint. At least not to my knowledge

Hey, great video, not alot of info on SCM machines. Still happy with it? Im thinking of this, the FS41ES or the Felder AD741. All machines are overkill for me, but I dont want a 500kg lump of steel thats crooked. The ES and Felder are alot more expensive here in Norway.
