A lordosis is when the spine curves towards the front of the body, bending forward. They are normally in the cervical or lumbar spine, where curves bend towards the front. The opposite is kyphosis, when the spine bends toward the back, such as in the thoracic spine or sacrum. Healthy curves of the spine make it act like a coiled spring and distribute weight evenly.
When the neck becomes excessively straight, it is called a loss of cervical lordosis or hypo lordosis. The loss of cervical lordosis can affect the biomechanics of the spine and lead to spinal degeneration. It can affect the bridge between the brain and body in multiple ways. The most common diagnosis is forward head posture. As little as one inch moving forward can increase the leverage force of your body to your spine by as much as 10 pounds.
When you lose the curve in the neck, you are more prone to injury since you can't absorb compressive forces as well. As your head moves forward, it can cause muscle pain and discomfort, abnormal degeneration and bone spurs, postural changes, and vascular issues.
All the nerves that go into your body go through the cervical spine, so the effects can be widespread. A major cause of loss of cervical lordosis is something we call tech neck. Looking at screens and phones for long lengths of time. Especially for children who are still growing. Uneven weight and trauma can also lead to a loss of cervical lordosis.
At The Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive treatment for spinal conditions, including loss of cervical lordosis. The treatment plans are shaped by the severity, causation, the patient's experience, and location of the loss of lordosis.
