It's another slow day living under the COVID-19 lock-down, so I'm keeping busy with my maintenance chores. Today it's bikes, beer, and beaver nuggets! This is a long ride, so skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes.
This video is a slow ride to Buc-ee's for snacks and beef brisket sandwiches. I left this video long and only edited out the waits at stoplights, so this is a complete ride today. It's not fast, it's not fancy... it's just a relaxed scooter ride around the Katy area.
We took my 2015 Honda PCX150 up on the highway today and it performed just fine. Our combined rider weight today is around 270 pounds (122 kg). This bike is mechanically stock except for Dr.Pulley sliders (13g) in the variator. The sliders allow this bike to consistently reach a top speed of ~67 mph before hitting the rev-limiter. The extra rider weight today doesn't seem to affect top speed, but it does slow the acceleration a bit, which is no surprise. My 2016 Honda PCX with the factory variator and roller weights can only reach ~63 mph before hitting the rev-limiter.
Time indexes:
0:00 : Almost ready to start working on the bikes, but I need snacks first!
2:53 : My Ryker key has gone walkabout again
3:46 : We are stir-crazy living under the COVID-19 lock-down, we need some fresh air!
7:26 : I hope Buc-ee's is open for business as usual
8:43 : Starting the highway run, reached a top speed of 68 mph on GPS
12:20 : Thinking about trading in one of my PCX150's on the new ADV150
14:56 : Arriving at Buc-ee's
18:20 : Mission accomplished! Heading out with our snacks in tow
20:30 : Taking the slow roads back home
21:50 : Wishful thinking about the 2019+ Honda Forza 300 coming to the USA... keep dreaming
24:30 : Snappy's Cafe in Katy is a great breakfast spot
27:10 : Katy Mills Mall is a ghost town due to the COVID-19 lock-down
30:10 : Katy Community Fellowship Church and drive-in services for Easter Sunday
32:40 : Cagers running red lights... ugh!
34:00 : OMG these lights suck today... just can't catch a break
36:50 : Rough ride on the PCX150's original shocks, YSS shock upgrade helped

Even a little "Little" shopping ride to you is like a tour to us in the UK ...Americans seem to do so many miles as a matter of course ( mind you do have the weather ) ...Good vid enjoyed it...( As for "Beaver nuggets") the mind boggles....

That is so true! Our metropolitan areas are very spread out in this part of the country, so there are vast distances to cover for just about any errand or destination. The large distances combined with the heat and humidity here make traveling by car, truck, or motorcycle almost mandatory. We don't have pervasive public transit systems or even public sidewalks here, so venturing out on foot or bicycle in the heat and frantic traffic is a losing proposition... if the cars don't get you, then the heat might. We are definitely not a pedestrian or "outdoor" culture here in southern Texas. When we take a "quick trip" to San Antonio, that is a 400-mile round-trip journey, and Dallas is over 500 miles round-trip. My average daily commute around the Houston metro is between 80-140 miles, depending on where I need to go. This place is HUGE. Beaver Nuggets are caramel-coated puffed-corn snacks. They are evil, delicious, addictive little things... just blink and you've eaten the entire bag before you realize it. 😉👍 --QM

I really enjoy your PCX videos. I first started watching your videos earlier this year and ended up spending a few months searching for a nice used PCX after watching your older videos. I ended up finding a nice used 2016 PCX150 with the National Cycle VStream Sport Touring Windscreen already attached and I'm loving it. Thank you for all of the high quality content, hope to see more of the PCX's in the future. Ride safe! 👍

I haven't been riding the PCX's much over the last couple of months, but I did take them on a 1600-mile trip to the Ozarks back in May. 13:04 Traffic cops do that ALL the time. I really want to get one of these, but my car already gets 35 mpg and where I live has hills. I wouldn't save enough to switch to this. If you want a commuter motorcycle and weigh more than 175 lbs get one of these. If you weigh less than 175 lbs and won't go on highways (55 mph) I'd probably get the Honda Super Cub as it gets even better mpg (125 mpg).

Thanks for the feedback, Paul! The PCX150 is probably a near-perfect commuter bike as long as your road chores don't mandate traveling on fast highways most of the time. The newer PCX160 has more power and top speed, so it's a bit more capable in terms of highway travel. However, I've heard from many owners that the 160's are significantly more thirsty than the older 150's. I average over 100 MPG with my PCX150, but it seems that most of the 160's are down in the 85-95 MPG range. That's still crazy-efficient, so the 160 might be a worthwhile tradeoff. Good luck shopping, and let us know how it goes! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Luckily, my youngest daughter (3 yrs old) is a tomboy dare-devil, and she LOVES anything to do with cars, motorcycles, or bicycles... anything with wheels! She's not quite old enough to ride anywhere outside of my neighborhood with me yet, but she'll probably be my riding buddy in a few more years. Yeah I guess in the UK 150cc doesn't really make sense for manufacturers because of the 125 licensing laws. It's a shame because that little bit extra over a 125 makes them so much more practical. Not a highway (motorway) bike for sure, but just 60mph roads become way less sketchy on a bike that can actually comfortably do 60pmh on most reasonable gradients rather than constantly trying to keep up The forza 300 is great though - can definitely take that on the highway!

You were talking about the ride being ruff over the concrete seams so. Could you run less air in the tires and soften the bounce a little ?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 2 жыл бұрын
I could lower the tire pressures, but that would introduce more rolling resistance and heat in the tires. The OEM suspension these older PCX150's is notoriously harsh, but Honda improved the damping and spring rates on the 2019+ models. I upgraded my 2016 PCX150 with YSS PD valves in the front forks and YSS adjustable gas shocks on the back. That improved the ride considerably over stock, although the YSS rear spring rates are a bit too stiff for my preference. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I'm torn whether to upgrade one of my PCX150's with the new 160, or just wait for Honda to bring the rumored ADV300 or Forza 350 here to the States. Honda hasn't had a decent mid-sized scoot in their USA lineup for nearly a decade. I own a 2004 SilverWing 600 that's fantastic out on the highway, but it's a heavy pig around town. The new Forza 300/350 would be a great middle ground between the PCX and the SIlverWing. Cheers! 👍 --QM

I'm over 21 and currently have a Class C license. I'm going to purchase a scooter soon (150cc). What do I need to do in order to be street legal? Do I get a motorcycle endorsement? Do I have to take classes or pass road tests? I'm totally lost.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 3 жыл бұрын
Some US states have slightly different motorcycle laws, but most of them have similar requirements. Texas requires an "M" (motorcycle) endorsement to operate any motorcycle on public roadways. There are fewer limitations in some states for "mopeds" and small scooters under 50cc, but Texas classifies nearly all scooters as motorcycles unless they have pedals and also have a maximum speed of under 25 MPH. You can get more information from your state's DMV office (Texas Motorcycle Operator Training Manual: www.tdlr.texas.gov/mot/pdf/TDLR%20Motorcycle%20Operators%20Manual.pdf , TxDOT Licensing Site: www.txdot.gov/driver/safety/motorcycles.html ). As far as I know, all states require the rider to complete the MSF Basic Rider Course as a prerequisite to receive a motorcycle endorsement: msf-usa.org/brc.aspx . I highly recommend taking that course as a bare minimum, and also taking some advanced rider courses to give extra training for emergency maneuvers, traffic avoidance, etc. The only prerequisite for the MSF basic course is to hold a valid "C" license or a current learner's permit. Most MSF training sites will provide motorcycles to ride during the course, and they will also allow you to use your own motorcycle or scooter if you prefer. Good luck with your upcoming purchase and your entry into motorcycling! Cheers, and ride safe! 😉👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback and for watching! I have never owned a Vespa, but I've ridden them on many occasions. I currently own several smaller scoots (Yamaha C3 XF50 and two Honda PCX150's) and also the mighty Honda SilverWing 600 maxi-scoot. I have been waiting & hoping that Honda will bring the new 2019+ Forza 300 or the newest Forza 350 scoot here to the USA, but that's an unlikely scenario due to poor scooter sales here in the States. The recent Scooter Cannonball Run that I did back in July 2020 was started primarily as a Vespa event and has close ties to the VCOA group. They opened the event to other makes of scoots many years ago to encourage more riders to participate ( follow.scootercannonballrun.com ). I'm shopping for another mid-sized scoot in the 300cc range... I'm seriously considering a Vespa GTS after seeing so many of them in the Cannonball! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! I nearly purchased a T-Max 500 a couple of times, but I don't fit on the scoot quite right. I'm vertically-challenged at only 5'7" (170 cm) with a 30" inseam (76 cm), so the T-Max's 31.5" seat height and width is a bit of a problem for me. I've ridden one on several occasions, and I'm very impressed by the engine power and the handling characteristics. The T-Max handles much sharper than my Honda SilverWing 600. Yamaha hasn't sold them here in the USA for several years, so they are hard to find on the used market. If we eventually receive the new T-Max 560 here in the States, then I might consider getting one to replace my SilverWIng. I'll just need to figure out a way to shave down the seat for my short legs! That red directional pointer when idle behaves like a frantic bird looking around for danger. :P I get a kick out of random things. Hey man, where does that shield come up to in conjunction with your face/helmet? I read ideally, the top of a shield should be right about equal with the nose. Not sure how accurate that is, or if it depends entirely on the individual. Your take? I am striving for some wind, but not where it's annoying.
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the traditional logic and a smart safety practice: your windscreen should always be below your eyeline so you aren't looking THROUGH the screen. Dirty windscreens are a hazard because we don't have windshield wipers to clear them like cars do. It only takes a few seconds of following behind a car/truck in a mild rain storm to completely cover the windscreen in road spray, mud, etc. The other common hazard is riding into the sun in the early mornings or late evenings with a dirty screen... the glare can be impossible to see through. As for the discussion on windscreen height and aerodynamics, it varies greatly depending on the bike and the windscreen's profile (rake angle, height, shape, distance from the pilot, etc). I prefer the adjustable windscreens whenever I can get them (e.g. MadStad Engineering, madstad.com/) so I can vary the position depending on the ride and weather conditions. The screen on this PCX150 is the National Cycle VStream Sport Touring Windscreen: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/national-cycle-vstream-sport-touring-windscreen-honda-pcx150-2014-2018 . Im about 5'7" tall, and this screen terminates about chin level for me (the camera is 4-5" lower than my eyeline). BTW... the new Honda ADV150 has an adjustable screen from the factory! I'm not sure how useful the OEM will be, but I'm sure that aftermarket manufacturers like Givi and MadStad will make new shields that can probably bolt in place and still utilize the factory height adjusters. I'm anxious to find out! 👍 --QM

@@QuasiMotard I checked out that ADV150 you mentioned and yes, it certainly has me thinking in a new direction now. The adjustable shield only makes sense and it's about time Honda figured this out. Everyone differs. I'm about the same height as you are, so that's why I wanted your take on things. Although, you're much lighter than me at the MOMENT. LOL! That is also something I must work on. :) I've been saying this for a decade. Oh well, one day...!!

Thanks for the feedback! Generally speaking, CVT's are nearly maintenance-free and only require checkups during the scheduled maintenance intervals (usually 8-16K miles). The CVT belt doesn't need any lubrication or tension adjustments like chains need, so that's a huge benefit for commuters and people that frequently ride in the rain. I have upgraded to high-performance CVT components in my scooters for higher top speeds and marginally better efficiency. Unfortunately, those parts might not be up to Honda's quality standards and can be prone to failure. I've had the Dr.Pulley sliders misbehave in the white 2015 PCX, and the entire NCY variator failed in the gray 2016 PCX. Reverting to the factory parts fixed the problems each case. 😉👍 --QM

My PCX150's tend to feel a little bit "flighty" at highway speeds. I think it's due to the narrow tires and lots of surface area for the wind to push against. Is that the RAM Mount X-Grip for your phone? How does it hold up?

Howdy, Mervin! I was using the RAM X-Grip on a couple of my bikes and scoots when this video was recorded, but I'm not using them anymore. I had a few retention problems over large bumps and potholes that sent my phone flying down the road. Since then, I've upgraded all of my mounts to the Quad Lock system with the anti-vibration mount and wireless charger (product links below). The Quad Lock is 100% secure and won't let the phone go unless you manually release it. Another bonus is that I used the 1" ball adapter so I could reuse all of my RAM balls for a more flexible mounting system. I can swap cameras, GPS, phone, or other accessories onto the RAM balls whenever necessary. You can see the upgraded mounting system on the PCX in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNKog8KimrTJeXU.html . That's a great question! This video was recorded when this 2015 PCX150 had the OEM variator, but it was upgraded with the Dr.Pulley 14g slider weights. That allowed the PCX to reach 67-68 MPH under most circumstances. I upgraded both of my PCX's to aftermarket variators about one month later. This 2015 PCX150 received the Dr.Pulley performance variator kit (upgraded variator assembly with 13g slider weights), and that yielded 72-74 MPH top speed in most circumstances. My 2016 PCX150 was upgraded with the NCY Ultimate Transmission kit (variator, roller weights, clutch, and stiffer rear contra spring), and that yielded 74-76 MPH top speeds. Unfortunately, the NCY variator's performance degraded over about 2500-3000 miles, and it eventually failed completely by eating two CVT belts within 45 miles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n6-Ga9yk3p-Xmo0.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f8iXqZCjrMnReI0.html . I reverted the 2016 PCX back to a completely stock configuration and it's fine now. My 2015 PCX still has the Dr.Pulley kit in it, but I need a stiffer contra spring to prevent the sliders from cocking sideways in the variator ramps: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/neBjdr16ztmZZI0.html . That problem continues to happen every few hundred miles. It's not a show-stopper, so I'm just dealing with it for now. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Then there are the entry- and middle- weight scooters like the Honda Forza 125 and 300, or the big X-ADV 750 that have been very popular in Europe. Sadly, those machines don't sell well enough here for Honda USA to consider importing them. 😭 --QM

These smaller motorcycles and scooters can do anything and go anywhere that bigger bikes can... just slower. For me, it's just a matter of picking the battles carefully. I don't typically enjoy riding my small bikes up on the interstate highways or faster highways here in Houston because our cagers are extremely aggressive and dangerous. The back highways and side roads are no problem for these machines where the speeds are somewhat lower and traffic isn't as dense. Cheers! 👍 --QM

Thanks for the feedback! This bike is all stock except for 13g Dr.Pulley sliders in the variator. The sliders allow for about 3-4 MPH extra on the top before the rev-limiter kicks in. I recently upgraded the variators and clutches in both of my PCX's, and now they can consistently reach 72-74 MPH top speed. They haven't hit the rev-limiter yet with these variators, which means that the top speed is drag-limited. @QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! Most of the roads in the Houston area are concrete... very few are asphalt unless they also have concrete underneath. I think the reason is for road durability. We are very near sea level, so water management and soil instability are problems for asphalt roads... they break and decay quickly. Here is an interesting article on the subject: www.houstonchronicle.com/local/explainer/article/Explained-why-the-roads-in-Houston-are-so-bad-9131932.php . This article is a more in-depth review of the issue: www.houstonchronicle.com/news/transportation/article/Houston-is-in-for-a-bumpy-ride-to-fix-its-pocked-14544658.php . We also have a lot of chipped and broken windshields on our cars because of the concrete highways here. An asphalt roadway will allow small rocks and pebbles to be compressed down into the surface, but concrete doesn't... those rocks are kicked up by the tires and hit the cars (and motorcycles) in their path. Ouch. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Is it possible to disengage the Rev limited on the pcx ?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! I haven't researched the option for modifying the factory ECU to remove (or raise) the rev-limiter, but I'm sure that is possible. An upgraded variator such as the NCY/Golden Pulley kit (www.scooterworks.com/NCY-Variator-Assembly-Golden-Pulley-Honda-PCX-P12407.aspx) or the Dr. Pulley kit (www.steadygarage.com/store/dr-pulley-pcx-150-125-sh125i-sh150-pcx125-pcx150-variator-set) will push the CVT belt higher on the front pulley to give the PCX a higher top speed. This is generally safer than removing the engine's rev-limiter and risking valve float or other RPM-induced engine damage. 👍 --QM

Hey, are these engines made well ?
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the PCX150 engines are nearly bulletproof from what I've seen. I haven't had a single problem with mine, and I can't recall any other owners complaining of unreliability or other mechanical problems with their bikes at all. The starter/alternator is one unit and it's mounted directly on the crankshaft, so there is no separate starter motor and related mechanicals (e.g. bendix, flywheel gear, pinion gear, etc)... that's what enables the automatic idle-stop for other markets (we don't get it here in the USA). The radiator and cooling system is also packaged flat on the side of the motor, and the cooling fan is integrated on the other end of the crankshaft. The simplicity and reduction of components is really ingenious. I remember reading the technical documentation on the engine's design and how Honda made it so crazy-efficient, and that's one of the main reasons that I purchased my PCX's. Cheers! 👍 --QM

The rev limiter that Honda puts on these motors is at a very safe operating limit for the engine... it's not quite the same as your typical "redline". There are aftermarket ECU tuners that raise the limiter up 1500+ RPM, and those motors still seem to fare just fine. Honda PCX's are legendary for their reliability in Europe and Asia, where they routinely see horrible treatment and last 80K km or more. The only risk to the driveline that you can sometimes encounter from extended high-speed runs is belt wear (or failure) because of excessive heat buildup in the CVT... but those are very rare occurrences and happen under high load conditions (like the Scooter Cannonball Run, coast to coast endurance event). --QM
@QuasiMotard
@QuasiMotard 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it's funny that you ask! I'm planning to head up to the Ozarks in Arkansas next Thursday (5/21) for a 5-day scooter ride and motocamp meet-up. Several of the Scooter Cannonball Run members will be attending the meet. One local member here in the Houston area will be riding one of my PCX's and I'll be riding the other one! We will probably put down about 1500-1800 miles on this trip (no real itinerary has been set, but the minimum will be ~1200 miles for us). The longer highway portions will be 60-ish mph for about 300 miles at a time, then slower mountain roads at 40-50 mph during most of the day rides. Now, if your intention is to use your new PCX to make extended runs on IH-10 or similar 75+ mph highways, then it's not really suited for that, and you probably won't enjoy that for too long. The limited top speed makes it a little outmatched when cagers are routinely running 90+ mph, running up behind you at a +25 mph closure rate. The engine can take the abuse, but your nerves might be a different story. 😉👍 ‐‐QM

@Jason Kastendieck I'm sure that it can be done! You will probably want to plan your routes to stay off of the super slab as much as possible (no interstate highways w/ speed limits of 75+ mph) and just take the back highways whenever you can. If you upgrade the variator in the PCX for under $200, then you should be able to reach a "comfortable" 65-70 mph without hitting the rev-limiter. I will be upgrading the variators in my PCX's before this trip starts, so we can compare the before/after top speeds and fuel economy. I plan to record most of my upcoming ride and post those videos, so maybe you can get an idea of how that trip would feel on the PCX. If you want a more comfortable ride and better highway capabilities, then I'd recommend a used 2014 Honda Forza 300 or even a newer Yamaha X-MAX 300... those bikes have top speeds over 90 mph, so you won't have any trouble traveling on the interstates with all of the crazy cagers. 👍 --QM
