Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I liked many of these works, some were gorgeous, but I also disliked several of them, and I don't think that's a bad thing. They did stir up an emotion for me after all, and I think that's one of the main things artists are looking for. Maybe not necessarily that specific emotion, but it's still better than nothing, I can imagine. Let me put it this way: I would be more upset if someone couldn't care less about my art, then if they would dislike it. Thanks for the tour. Great video.

After reading comments from various art show videos, I've come to realize opinions on art is like music and movies. It's a generational thing.

I dont normaly comment on these shows...but this was a great collection of interesting art.

Art now needs to be really LARGE to attract interest.

There are many forms of this work, there must be one you want to own.！

My review of mt\y sculpture was in 1964. No one had seen my work , I took three model of large pieces and some photos with me. A friend of my family knew Cornelia and Kenneth Noland. I did not know what to expect , but not only did she like my work, she contacted David Smith Attorney in Washing DC and set the ball moving . I wanted to apprentice with him. As I graduated high school Mr. Smith was killed in an auto accident. The next two revue of me and my work came in art school in Maryland. During the first two weeks everyone hurried about getting ready for classes to start. Within a week there was a meeting with the students in the auditorium with the Dean. I write about in my book about art. He looked like the Beatniks I hung out with .......long hair. handle bar mustache.... he was introduced by the assistant Dean, Mr. Sutton. He talked about art only for a short period, then he lowered the "Boom" on the new class of 1967. " In ten years " he said : " Only one of you will be left in art ". The rest will become mother and fathers,,,hold down jobs , attend other schools. Now had all the mothers and fathers who worked so hard heard that, prior to writing the check, they would have stopped. The class become silent. Many jaws dropped. I think it took amazing guts ti say what he knew, rather than sugar coating everything. Everyone left and he sat on the stage. I went up to him and told him my David Smith story. He said :" It sounds to me like you now where are going", implying I did not need to waste my time there. I walked home after talking to him for an hour. " It's me I said, it's me". The next experience with art was before I left school, Clyfford Still, the great painter dd a revue of his work. He was dressed in a grey suit and looked like a banker. When I saw his work I knew I had to meet him. I stayed after and only a few people were even there. I went up to him and asked about his work. He said to call him and would would meet. I went over to his place and this is what I learned. "Mark" he said, " There are two types of art, one you make to sell and the other you keep. Most artists never make a living and therefore you must sell something that people want. Now many people did not know this or they would have done it. I carried my time with him through several visits with me for 50 years. I made a living and made art. When he died they discovered a wharehouse no one knew about. He bought the building and then filled it with paintings. 200 or so and drawings. It was estimated day one to be worth a billion dollars rough guess.I laughed because he hid the work he loved . It was made by him and only for him. So I have saved work from periods of my work. I gave them to a non-profit school. Free. These men and women who very early in my career, guided me in the right direction. I had these lessons that were successful l for them and I had to find my own style, as all artists do. There is no easy way I can tell you. If you believe in yourself , then others will believe in you and your work. That is the answer. Never copy anyone, be yourself and if you work hard, you will become the artist you are meant to be. It's there. You now know the secret of art. So being in MoMa or any of the big ones, would be nice, but I assure you they are not artists, that is not their business. There have been a few critics along the way who knew artist , spent time with them and learned what art is.....the rest would not know art if they stepped in it......never listen to them. I wish you well and I hope you will learn from what I have said. There is no luck, according to my father , who used that word. The harder you work, the luckier you get.... paint, sculpt, write, draw , dance do what you love he said to me, the money comes later. Money has nothing to do with art and if you looking there you may never make it. You may make money, but not art. Look today at what is in these shows. You tell me, it not all bad of course, but one of the most successful men Berry Gordy and Smokie Robinson of Motown records. They had a review of every song. They had 30 people of so listen to each song, Berry would ask : Would you buy this record or a sandwich". He was right more than he was ever wrong.

There was a day (quite some decades ago at least) when artists labored on drawing skills, conceived and composed paintings, struggled with meaningful ideas about space and form, and were actually artists in the real sense of the word. Now all that is out. Everybody makes something very superficial, and the only message is "Look at ME!". Still they call themselves "artists", but I don't.

These art fairs are starting to look more and more like flea markets

There are many good artists who are not shown, they cannot afford this means of showing work. I have watched several shows , including the BIG ones and yet have seen little art that even closely resembles real art. When I went to art school, my first professor kept saying " Ambiguous". . Because art is such a huge business, people allow mediocre art to be shown, sold and collected, The auction houses I doubt are getting the numbers in auctions and I would love to see a canceled check showing someone paid that . I also find blame with the museums, who some have my work. There are hundreds of thousands of talented men and women who are making great art. You'd never know that by what is shown. Picasso, and many of the greats are long dead and do not need the money. Instead others are staving because they can't sell their works. While I have the greatest respect for Renoir, Degas , and the gang. I think they would raise hell with the system as it is. Having artists in LA, NY and other cities produce artworks that are clearly for sale to make money and have little to do with art. I could use Andy as an example. When he sent a letter to MoMA to gift an artwork, he thought that if he could get one in there he would be set. Predictably , they of course have a letter they send out : Dear Mr. Warhol, We regret that we cannot accept your gift////blah blah blah.....of course they paid 64 million for his Soup cans years later and would do anything to gain a painting for their " Grey " walls. So I say that speaks for itself. It was only later that many of his friends needed up in the management of these museums and that is one of the ways people get in...top secret. It's who you know.
