Hi arjun, i understand your fear because I get enquiries with this thinking. Every course cannot garauntee success, it depends on your calibre. A good sports medicine doctor can never be pushed down to the job of physio that means he doesn't know what sports medicine is itself. The biggest misconception is that we treat only sports injuries, as sports and exercise physicians our patients range from orthopaedic injuries to performance enhancement from a layman to an elite athlete and once we convince the management that all private hospitals would love to have that. Currently there is a lack of sports medicine doctors in the market, many medical colleges are starting MD degrees and they need sports medicine doctors. I agree the market is more in metro cities because the need is more there. Once those cities get saturated will it trickle to other cities. I personally know of hospitals in Bangalore who are actively looking for sports medicine doctors. Now sports medicine doctors are not people who sit all the time in hospital from 9-5, if you want such a job recommend a different course, you should be attached to different associations, clubs etc and these will give you clients. I started my career in a private hospital in Kerala. See at the end I always say this field is similar to how pulmonology started, in the beginning everybody said you have medicine so why pulmonology but now can you imagine a hospital without a pulmonologist. See is it worth it, is a ridiculous question to ask, it's like asking if doing MBBS is worth it. I can't answer that for you. If you love sports then it's worth it. Marks I'm not sure. Rank changes each year based on PG neet, last year to my knowledge 3600 rank was the last rank to go for Safdarjung. Plus every year the seats are increasing so definitely the rank will change.

Hi Ultra medico. To become a team doctor I would recommend to do post graduation in sports medicine preferably MD Sports medicine. Once you have that qualification all teams will take you up as team doctor.

After MS ortho fellowships are available quite a lot depending upon the location. Almost all are associated with arthroscopy and trauma. Sports medicine exclusive fellowship are present in US and Australia but to obtain it will be difficult as you need to have passed their exams. I would also recommend to check out South Africa which have a good robust orthopaedic and sports medicine fellowship program.

Arthroscopy comes under the realm of orthopaedics so definitely you can work with sports stars and athletes. Fellowship usually targets arthroscopy. Currently due to the lack of sports medicine doctors and the saturation in orthopaedic market there is a shift of orthopaedicians entering sports medicine. So definitely you can work with athletes and a background of orthopaedics gives an advantage.

To enter sports medicine field work with sports associations, teams etc and you will get ample opportunity

Let me put it this way if you have pneumonia you can go to a General medicine doctor for serious issues and a general MBBS doctor for basic issues so why go to a pulmonologist (lung specialist). It's because they are specialists, in their field. Similarly Sports medicine doctors are specialist in their field and we make sure the person return to full activity stronger and faster.

Hi Lakshey, Unfortunately Sports medicine is an MD course and arthroscopy does not come under the gambit of sports medicine. IF you are interested in surgery I would recommend orthopaedics where you can train in arthroscopy. In Sports medicine invasive procedures are intraarticular injections currently.

Hi For UK you will have to clear their plan and then there is a program for sports medicine which you will have to take. Please do understand it is very sought out. In Germany sports medicine is not a separate field if I remember. I'm not sure about that country

I would recommend first clear NEET and get into MBBS. once you have completed MBBS, see if you are still interested in sports medicine and then you can do your postgraduation in that area. hi Spandana, Fellowship course usually in sports medicine is very rare and to my brief knowledge is available in Australia which is a bit hard to get. The scope outside India definitely is much higher as sports medicine is a much more recognised and advanced field. In India since the field is growing, post doctoral definitely has a lot of value in medical colleges who are seeking such individuals so as to start MD sports medicine in their colleges.

Hi Giovani. Yes currently Sports medicine is dominated by orthopaedician but that was mainly because lack of sports medicine doctors. Im sure that in another 10 years sports medicine will be a very common term. Like right now you enquiring about the field is because you are hearing about it. Earlier it didnt exist. You can say prime example is like Pulmonology and General Medicine. There is no fellowship for sportsmedicine after orthopaedics in India. In India you cannot call yourself as a sports medicine doctor and there is RTI which states that from NMC/ MCI.

@@santhrupth8197 Sports medicine abroad is not very easy to get as it is very much sought after field and getting into premier leagues is next to impossible unless you have contacts or you are really good and have impressed the doctor managing a premier league. You can start with a lower tier team and work your way up but it is a grind. In UK there is a Msc course which many indian doctors take thinking it is the stepping stone to sports medicine but it is not valid in India and in UK even its not accepted. To get through the regular channel you have to write the clearance exams like PLAB or USMLE and then get into the program but the competition is crazy. Haha if you have seen my video on Brandon williams, have been a Manchester United fan from a very very long time - been following since the mid of Ferguson era.

Hi Seimi. I wont recommend steroid intake as it is harmful to health and damages your body long term for short term gains. Kindly use natural methods to train your body. Those who advise steroids mainly do it for monetary benefit, kindly stay away from it.

Unfortunately there is no fellowship in sports medicine. There is an IOC diploma online programme but it is very costly.

No MD Sports medicine are MD courses. There is no surgical training but you will be exposed to surgery as Othopaedics is a portion of Sports medicine. You will be trained in invasive procedures like intraarticular injections, sclerotherapy etc but surgical repairs come under the domain of Orthopaedics ad i would recommend to take it up if you enjoy surgical field.

Hi Ranjith, Definitely there will be interaction with athletes. It is a 3-year program so you will be based in the hospital. You will have exposure to athletes. Certain colleges like SRMC even let you travel with the team for experience.

Hi Abinna. It's great that you love sports and want to become the team doctor for the Indian Cricket team. First, you have to take MBBS and become a doctor and then after that get MD sports medicine as your postgraduation degree. This will let you enter the sports field. From here you will have to work hard and who knows with the right connections you might be the next team doctor of the Indian cricket team.

Hi Priya, In india there is no fellowship in Sports medicine. Only ones are abroad which to get would be a bit difficult. But if you get, to come back and practice in india will be a bit difficult as it is not MCI recognised. But out of India there will be value.

Hi Sarmad. Currently, there is no DNB course in India. There is an FNB programme but I would recommend the MD programme which is an established programme.

Hi Wani. I understand the difficulty. There is always a tug between studies and sports. First, get to become an MBBS doctor and then once you have understood what you enjoy doing then choose a career. If your passion is still in sports medicine. Then I would recommend after UG taking MD sports medicine as PG which will get you closer to being a team doctor in IPL etc.

If you get MD that would be my first preference. Pg dip is an entry to sports medicine, the course is good but the qualifications cannot be compared, its similar to diploma in OBG and MS OBG, two cannot be compared but it gives an entrance to the field.

Hi Dr Vishnu this course unfortunately cannot be pursued by Dentist. For dentist there is sports dentistry which you can pursue after BDS. If you want to get into sports science there are MSc courses available but its not sports medicine please do understand.

Hi Pavan not necessarily. BCCI doesnt mean only the Indian team coverage. You will be working at the NCA where multiple players of the Indian team come for consultation. And I don't think to cover the whole of India only one doctor can do that. But to enter BCCI you need quite a lot of political connections.

Hi Mohammed unfortunately there is no fellowship in sports medicine online which is acknowledged by MCI. There is IOC sports medicine fellowship given by IOC which has olympic acceptance but is not accepted by MCI.

Well outside India, Sports medicine is a very sought after course and the pay is very high. In US a sports physician salary in average is 240000 US dollars annually. To enter teams the criteria is usually a sports medicine degree. For entering cricket teams, you need connections as well as good experience.
