Last night at US Nationals 2021 (Night 1), one of the biggest surprises for me was Leanne Wong’s (GAGE) floor routine! It was absolutely fantastic, and earned the second highest score of the night, only behind Simone Biles’s 14.650 on floor exercise. I loved how elegant this floor exercise was, not to mention her strong twisting form and very clean execution. If she can clean up that Silivas landing, she’ll earn an even higher E score, but as of now, an 8.5 is still huge! See how she earned her D score (difficulty score) and E score (execution score) in this video.
If Leanne can repeat her night 1 results on night 2, I think she’ll definitely be putting herself into Olympic consideration. Just as Jordan Chiles proved herself a worthy competitor at Winter Cup 2021 and US Classics 2021, this Nationals competition could potentially be a big breakthrough for her. If you have any Olympic team predictions, feel free to tell me in the comments! Right now, I’m imagining a team with Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, and the remaining spot going to one of many gymnasts, Grace McCallum and Leanne Wong notably in consideration. I guess we’ll have to see what goes on as the results pan out.
I’ve been out for a while due to school stuff and missed US Classics because of that, which was unfortunate, but I’m back now and am able to cover Nationals. If you have any specific requests, please feel free to let me know! I’m probably going to cover Sunisa Lee’s bars and Chellsie Memmel’s beam next.
Notes:
- I had her at a 5.8 (crediting the double L turn at first), but the judges awarded her a 5.7. This is only possible through downgrading the double L turn to a B skill, which I thought was quite strict! It does make sense; her leg drops below horizontal.
- The leg separation deduction on her whip (A) + triple twist (E) was actually on the whip; I didn’t see any deduction for leg separation on the triple twist. I couldn’t tell if she had flexed feet in the triple twist but it looked clean enough to me for the parts where one could see the feet.
- The body shape 0.1 deduction on her leap series was for the switch ring leap (C), where the back leg was a bit below where it had to be to avoid a deduction.
- The excessive preparation deduction before her back 2.5 twist (D) + front full (C) was due to the choreography becoming much slower right prior to the pause and then the pause in the corner. It seemed to interrupt the artistic flow, which is understandable given how important refocusing yourself is before a big tumbling pass.
- I did not see any complex choreography in her routine, so I deducted 0.1 as an artistic deduction. I thought that her choreography was superb in this routine! If she is looking to put some in, I think the bit of empty choreography prior to her third pass would be a good spot.
- I couldn’t use her music on the end of the video; it’s copyrighted! She performs to “Gramphon” by Eugen Doga.
Actual score: 14.200 = 5.7 + 8.5
I’m not an expert judge, and if you have an alternate perspective or a question, I would encourage you strongly to let me know in the comments! Judging is always subjective; judging in real time differs from judging on video. The purpose of this video is not to malign the gymnasts, but rather to highlight their accomplishments and explain why they earned the score that they did.

The deduction is a bit poorly named; it's more like a "pause" deduction. It's an artistry deduction, so it's definitely nitpicky, but it makes sense (at least to me) -- if a gymnast pauses so much that it interrupts their artistic flow, a deduction is justifiable.

@@ashleyrocke4144 It's subjective, but from about 1:00 when she turns to face the floor to 1:05 when she starts tumbling there's no "significant" choreography. Geez. Her artistry draws me in the minute she starts her routine! Watching this a year later makes me just kinda? Sad for her. Yeah she is thriving in college, but I just feel she could’ve been such a huge asset to the US Tokyo team, and (personally liking this attribute) she added a huge amount of artistry to the mix compared to Grace. Leanne’s floor at the Olympics could’ve won bronze with this !!!!!!! Grace so deserved going and she is beyond amazing, but I’m just such a fan of Leanne and her work, and 14.2 is INSANE. It definitely is strict, but I could see something was there at full speed. I imagine that judging live would actually be an advantage for seeing those little errors.
@copper0
@copper0 3 жыл бұрын
It’s super easy to see IF you’re looking in the right spot. The error on the Silivas started in the end of the back handspring when she twisted off the floor (initiating twist too soon), the second we as judges see this, it’s a simple cause and effect relationship, her legs will cross. Happens in every one of her passes. Go back and watch the end of the BHS leading into each back pass and you’ll see she initiates the twist too soon which will result in crossed legs. Hell nearly 100% of the time if you see a gymnast initiate too early, you might as well just notate crossed legs cause it’ll happen.
@sethescope
@sethescope 3 жыл бұрын
@@copper0 whoa you're blowing my mind here, friend. obviously, I am a layperson, so the fact I see some of the slightly less obvious deductions is massive, but the noticing how she twists too early and knowing what that will inevitably do to her posture for the rest of the skill is 200 IQ
@copper0
@copper0 3 жыл бұрын
@@sethescope honestly its nothing special. Most (not all but most) judges grew up in the sport first competing them selves, then usually coaching where you spend years saying the same dam thing over and over again (point your toes, legs together, straighten your arms) and then eventually judging where you see the same thing over and over again, it just becomes predictable.

One of my favourite floors of this year, I wish to see it at Tokyo. (I just guess should've been -0.1 for having more than one subsequent acro line, since the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th lines are made in sequence).
@GymAnalysis
@GymAnalysis 3 жыл бұрын
I love this exercise too! Regarding the back to back deductions, as long as you put choreography and/or elements between, I'm under the impression that there's no deduction. Leanne had a Popa between her first and second pass, so I didn't deduct there. The third and fourth ones are arguable depending on if one views the choreography as enough to dodge the deduction, but it was enough for me :)
@pedrojorge1912
@pedrojorge1912 3 жыл бұрын
@@GymAnalysis We're talking about different deductions. Yes, gymnast must have choreo or elements between subsequent lines (distribution of elements - item 2) but, additionally, they can do it only once (distribution of elements - item 3). Even with good corner choreo, she can't go back to back more than once. Most girls use back to back with 1st/2nd, Lara Mori (2019) used in 2nd/3rd, Biles (2013) in 3rd/4th, but only one time in the routine.

@@maxvillareal9654 Code of Points 2022-2024, Section 13 page - 4. "Distribution of elements (...) - More than 1 subsequent acro line (...)" When a gymnast lands an acro line, does some choreo, returns to the _same_ corner and does the next acro line, that's called subsequent acro line. That's what Leanne does at 0:26. That's perfectly fine, but can be done only once in the routine. Normally gymnasts do it between 1st and 2nd lines, then change corner between the others, with leaps or dance. Leanne doesn't change corner between 1st and 2nd _and_ between the 3rd and 4th as well (1:15), strictly applying the rules, that's a 0.1 deduction.

The goal of the deduction is to avoid routines like those in the 2009-2012 quad, when gymnasts would stand in the corner for a long time preparing mentally for their tumbling passes. FIG wanted to make the routines less interrupted by those pauses. Personally, I think it's fair, although it can be tough to determine what is choreography and what is preparation at times.

I didn't actually deduct for lack of expressiveness/engagement 😅 complex choreography does make sense though; I'd love to see her work a bit more on some unique moves to add to her routine. She picked quite a difficult piece of music (hard to clap along to, not super attention grabbing), but I think she's done super well with it!

@@GymAnalysis Its so weird that’s a factor because pieces of music like this are what used to be common and are what we consider artistic but now it causes a deduction? Stupid…

@@brodypenn Yeah, I think the artistry deductions' vagueness needs to be dealt with. I also don't think that someone could consider "failure to engage the audience" a deduction here just because of how small of an audience there was. She received great applause after she finished, and it seems that the crowd appreciated her routine, but the code could be clearer regarding what engagement is to avoid a deduction.

Wtf is "excessive preparation"?? Would they rather an athlete get injured from not preparing enough?

Hopefully she will ditch the Silivas and go back to the dos Santos I + stag when she returns to elite. Her landing is always low on it

“-.1 for Lack of complex choreography” WHAT.
@GymAnalysis

Complex choreography isn't a reflection of the entire routine (her choreography was quite sophisticated!) but rather a deduction for a lack of a specific piece of choreography that is difficult, original, and requires prior training. Complex choreography isn't as tricky as it sounds! Check out this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7OekqZ4y8i0n2w.html to see some examples. Excessive preparation is for a significant (2 seconds guideline) pause.

Nice but this lacks a tad bit of artistry. Doesn’t flow. US floor exercises are notorious of consisting of arms flaring, posing, and connecting the dots kinda programs. It really sucks that the tumbles seem more important than the artistry..
