When Bret Hart was in the WWF during the mid 90s and when Sting was on the opposing WCW side, many fans wanted to see who would win in a match. Not only did Hart and Sting have the same finishing move, but they were also once considered the very best "good guys" the WWF and WCW had during the 90s. Wrestling fans adored Bret Hart and Sting, and while people discussed dream matches like Undertaker vs Sting and Goldberg vs Steve Ausitn, many fans wanted to know who would win between the Hitman and the Stinger.
The history of WWF can't be discussed without mentioning Bret Hart, and the history of WCW can't be mentioned without Sting. At one point, it felt like both men wouldn't budge from their respective companies. But, the possibility of a Hart vs Sting match became a reality when Bret left the WWF together with other members of the Hart Foundation. Bret showed up in World Championship Wrestling as a babyface, and he helped Sting secure the WCW championship at Starrcade 1997. As 1998 went on though, both Bret and Sting's roles within WCW would drastically change. Sting would join the nWo Wolfpac, and Bret would align himself with nWo Hollywood. When Sting faced Bret at Halloween Havoc 98, Bret was now the heel while Sting remained a babyface. All subsequent meetings between Hart and Sting would see the roles again getting reversed, Sting worked as the "bad guy" while Hart was now portrayed as the "good guy".
This video looks at Bret and Sting's matches in WCW. Topics and matches covered include:
00:00 - WWF vs WCW dream matches
05:13 - The buildup towards Bret and Sting's first match
11:21 - Sting and Bret prepare for their Halloween Havoc match
13:56 - Hart vs Sting at Halloween Havoc 98
18:31 - Bret vs Sting in 1999
- Much More

@@RichSmithson I always loved how the announcers claimed these holds hurt the legs. I have three brothers (two older and one younger) and we practiced every hold imaginable on each other. The crab and death lock destroy the back fiercely . I had a friend that thought it was all b.s. I told him if he could last 10 seconds in my scorpion death lock I'd give him 20 bucks (Late 90's and I was 15ish). I took it easy on him for about 5 seconds. He wheezed in pain, but wouldn't give. He even gloated that it didn't really hurt. Then I raised that scorpion tail and dropped it in nice and deep. He cried like a little beech and never sniffed that 10 seconds. I laughed hard just typing that. Good memories. And yeah, Bret's was better.

I've been in the Boston Crab and handed it out on three occasions. I've personally seen the Scorpion Death Lock given to a guy out of genuine anger by a another guy. Anyone who thinks these two holds are B.S. has no idea what he's talking about. If applied properly, they are incredibly effective submission holds.

Yes, wrestling was the BOMB in the 1990s. Because I lived in a NYC suburb(still do), it was a RITUAL for my friends and I to go to Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum and the Meadowlands for "house shows." The wrestlers gave the fans "that little something extra" that made them WANT to return--they made efforts to acknowledge them. Bret said that "you never forget your fans. They are the ones who put food on your table and pay your bills." He always had/has a warm smile when he saw/sees me.

@@BC-bf2eq I agree with you that wrestling has become a joke--that was even before the pandemic. What's not a joke is that wrestlers have tested positive for COVID and whoever does temp checks only does it weekly, not more often than that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong--wrestling is a CONTACT sport. If distancing is needed to avoid getting sick, at the very least there should be more temp checks. Another joke is the "wellness policy" amid all this happening.

@@EVGriffinJr I agree to a point. It depended on who Sting was wrestling. If he was wrestling a younger wrestler later in his career, he'd sink it in deep. If he wrestled an older vet like a flair or hogan and such, he'd not sit out near as much, taking it easier on their damaged bodies.

Sting didn't have to apply much pressure when he used the scorpion deathlock. He had the strength and size to make it look painful. I remember Ron garvin using the hold earlier than sting, but to me it was sting that popularized the hold from 1987 to 1991. During this time Bret was a tag team wrestler never used the hold until mid 1991. He did it with the left leg. Look like he was hurt people for real. But sting was my favorite so I was pissed. To me sting's application looks more natural and easy to do. Bret technique is excellent but a little too technical. Sting use to apply it with one hand. That to me look more impressive. The stinger is the greatest of all time.

The matches weren't great but I get the mentality behind it; gotta protect both players. Right on the mark. These two had a far more intricate parallel than the much more cosmetic aspects of Sting and Taker. The problem was always about terrible WCW booking as this could’ve produced a legendary rivalry as well as ally character dynamics (when both would be face, as was the case in 1999) over the course of their respect careers. What kept Bret and Sting from having the 5-star "dream match" they should have had are the same factors that prevented countless WCW matches and angles from being great and/or making a lick of sense: clueless booking, incompetent match/feud build-ups, the nWo, unclean/screw-job/run-in/"Dusty" finishes, and egomaniacs "playing politics" backstage.

Great video! I never understood fans claiming that WCW didn’t use Bret properly. While he was a top star in WWF, WCW was a much bigger pool; plus he was not in the same league as Hollywood and the nWo. He was given a lot of glory in WCW by having the nWo welcome him to the company, being rivals with Sting, being involved in key nWo matters, plus winning the WCW belt himself. I found his WCW adventure to be great.

Always liked how it was always a struggle for Bret to lock in the Sharpshooter but when it was time to end the match and really lock it in, he wasted no time and made it look good from start to finish. In the end, legacy wise, the common wrestling fan will call it the Sharpshooter over the SDL. And I don't think it was a coincidence Sting opted to go with Death Drop DDT as his finisher later in his career to make it his own.

I remember, the day it was announced Bret Hart was coming to WCW, all I thought was that he and Sting would have a kickass feud because of the finisher move they both shared. Wasn't quite what was expected, however, much like the rest of Bret Hart's short-lived stint in WCW. :/ I don't remember if it was Bret himself who said it or if it was someone else from that era, but someone once said that "WCW had no idea what to do with Bret Hart". I think that quote sums up the whole situation pretty well. In my opinion, Bret added two things that made his sharpshooter stand out over the years: he executed it lower which made it look more painful and he would often hold it for a long period of time back during those years, which made it look more like torture than a pro wrestling submission move. As a matter of fact, I think the way Bret executed the sharpshooter on Stone Cold Steve Austin during their now famous match is one of the reasons why Austin became a fan favorite, because it looked damn painful and Austin just wouldn't give up. Sting however had the best turnbuckle splash ever. He usually didn't call for it beforehand and yet you could feel when he was about to do it.
