Scotland's Regiments: The Gordon Highlanders #1

This instalment in our series of Scottish regiments brings to life the prestigious Gordon highlanders. Even though the regiment is just over 200 years old, we have had to spread the video between two parts due to the impressive role it played within the British Army.

My Papa served with the Gordon Highlanders in WW1. HE listed right away and wasn't even 15 yet. I am so proud of him.

My Dads father served in WW1in the Gordon Highlanders, he too was under age as such. He died the year before I was born, wished I had known him. A historic and great regiment.

My grandfather too. He was wounded and only lived a short time after war ended. I am honored to be named Gordon.

My Uncle enlisted under age to join the Gordon's in 1914 by forging his fathers signature and my Grandfather could not get it annulled. He stated he was nineteen but was sixteen. I have a picture of two of my Uncles, one joined the Argyles and served in the regiment with my Grandfather from my Mothers side of the family, both Uncles had their photos taken locally at the same time prior to leaving for France. For some reason my Uncle Andrew did not have his kilt, he borrowed my Uncle David Argyle kilt. Uncle Andrew was invalided out due to shell shock after being buried by shell explosion in no mans land attacking the German lines. He returned to Glasgow for treatment but always had a stammer till his death in 1983. My Uncle David of the Argyles was not so lucky and died by sniper shot. I never was told why Uncle Andrew joined the Gordon's as my family are lowlanders and my Grandfather along with my Uncle were in the 2nd Battalion of the Argyles the local Regiment. @@WolfofAlba Excellent both my brothers were in the watch out of Montreal Canada and as my oldest brother was 12 years older anf an officer but had no family I was always at their family days and listening to their lore .

I'm a big fan of the Gordon Highlanders, but I have to comment on the part about Majuba Hill and the remark they were facing a superior number of Boer troops. At Majuba hill the numbers were about the same on both sides, the British lost to superior marksmanship and rifles, not numbers....

No direct translation. Its meaning is Stand and fight but comes from Scots word Bide meaning stand or stay as in these examples: abide with me or I am no awha to bide awha .
