Shaun Maloney came back to haunt the Irish as Scotland claimed a credible 1-1 draw in a feisty EURO qualifier in Dublin.
The Republic of Ireland took a first-half lead through Jon Walters but were come undone once again by some Maloney magic - who netted that famous winner in the reverse fixture - after the winger curled a shot off John O’Shea and into the net.
It’s a result that could prove crucial for Scotland’s EURO 2016 hopes and keeps us two-points ahead of Martin O’Neill’s team in the Group D standings.

The British must have stolen football from Ireland then when they owned the place for 300 years.

Irish fan here - McCarthy should have been sent off and the goal was offside, we didnt deserve that point.

Jim Lahey Yes we did deserve that point, you're clueless if you think otherwise. We dominated in that first half and had a very bad 10 minute spell in the second half. And to make it worse, we weren't even playing good, same with Poland, had we stepped up our game, we would have easily got the 3 points off both teams. Also go ahead don't mention anything about Brown or Naismith, that seems to be something we Irish people forget about after every game, instantly praise the opposition and then start talking about how we'll never have a team as good as the teams in the late 80's-early 00's

+Michael Beast You obviously don't know the offside rule.Firstly, none of the players body should be past the last defender.Secondly, In your first comment you said ''it came back off the keeper putting Walters onside'' when he was offside when the ball was first played, you do know that's the rule, don't you? come on you can't be that stupid. Anyway, in the end Ireland deserved to qualify, unfortunately we didn't.

Eoin Bishop You should probably take your own advice & research the rules yourself. When the header was was won by the Irish player, Walters was standing in an offside position. The fact it hit the goal keeper has absolutely no relevance what so ever, goalkeepers can't play you onside, he was offside.

Eoin Bishop The ball did not come directly from the corner, it came from a header, which then hit the goalkeeper, so again, he was offside. I know the rules, you don't, evidently.

have to say how pissed off i am, 3 of our best players left on the bench, why long and mcclean didnt start i dont know, naismith wouldnt shut up trying to get irish players sent off and spent half the game on the ground, yes it was an offside goal but apart from that the referee was so harsh on ireland and to concede after a minute into the second half is an absolute disgrace on our behalf, we really should have won that game

In all honesty, this group is far from over, We have Gibraltar and Georgia (home) in our next 2 games and Scotland have Georgia (away) and Germany, provided Germany actually show up against Scotland, we'll go back to third. Then we have Germany (home) and Poland (away) and Scotland have Poland (home) and Gibraltar. Now provided "we" show up and Germany don't we can get a point and hope Poland get a point or three against Scotland, then we have to win against Poland to get at least third. This is a tough ask but it is possible and if I was Scottish, I wouldn't exactly be thinking that you've already qualified because all it takes is one slip up from you and we're right back in it. Also we weren't playing good (and haven't been for a long time now), that was the first time we had ever started that team and them tactics that we have apparently "always played like" according to some of you, well we haven't played like that in the qualifiers at all this tournament....As for the offside goal, as "your" manager said, "If it was us that scored like that, we wouldn't care"...Unfortunately that's the way things go, I had to watch Henry handball it in the second half of extra-time and go on to pass it to Gallas who then scored which led to us being knocked out of the World Cup so there's no point blaming us for what happened, if there's anyone to blame it's the officials.

DazN-1997 Look at my comment again, I'm pretty sure me saying provided we show up means if we get our act together we won't slip up, I also said I'm hoping you slip up, didn't say you will, I said it's possible. That's the thing it's possible all 4 teams slip up somewhere in the last 4 games but I just don't think we'll lose to Poland or Germany with the way the group could shape up after the next 2 games.

Plus poland and Germany are our last 2 games so they will probably be already through and give fringe players a few caps giving ireland a slim advantage

At the end of the day it doesn't matter if you come 1st or 2nd you've already qualified it is likely that Poland and Germany will occupy these space and for the last games the play fringe players to give them a go and prove themselves as the don't need to play the big names as they don't need to win

DJA the corner taker was also in an offside position when the header went towards goal but he wasnt interfering with play. only walters who was clearly offside when the ball was headed (as seen in analysis footage )was interfering with play as he then put the ball in the net having been offside when the original attempt on goal was saved. all in the past now anyway in some ways its for the best as we would only have embarrassed ourselves in france instead of ireland doing it!

Nothing like an offside goal to give Germany and Poland a 2 point advantage over us! The least Ireland can do now is take points from Poland or Germany for us!

The fact we have went from drawing with Ireland to drawing with Austria and going to the euros is amazing tbh I would’ve loved. Rep of Ireland Wales and Northern Ireland to have been there so at least one of us could give the English a good beating No offence to English fans lol 😂

I thought Ireland played well in that game Scotland didn't get as many shots in. Ireland was mostly on the attack on the first half. But in the second half Ireland started to die down causing Ireland to walk off whit a point..

What happened to Scotland yesterday? They were shocking. This is the worst Ireland team for decades but the Scots froze on the day. They showed fear. Just glad to get out of there with a point. We cant allow ourselves to be this poor again or we can forget the Euros.

chunky monkeyjohn you can always get results even if u are not great ireland got an away draw in germany but they are still bad..strac seems to have scotland playing with a bit more confidence but they are no better than the irish.. all i saw yesterday in 90 mins was an offside goal from ireland and a jammy goal from the scots that was going yards wide until it hit o" shea..two bad teams..in fact on paper if you look at both sides the republic look like a stronger squad but dont have any confidence...for the life of me i cant understand why O"neill left long on the bench and took hoolahan off as he seemed to be the only playmaker on the pitch...at any rate when i think of the players both countries produced in the past and see what they have now its depressing ..something needs to change at youth level as its not working now

imedi Yes both teams dont have world class players anymore. It might get better for Scotland as there are various schools of excellence now. And young players getting a chance of first team football as Scottish clubs are skint. Ireland have better players than Scotland? I couldnt be sure. What i do know is that Ireland have taken 1 point out of 6 against Scotland in this group. And Scotland deservedly beat the Irish in Glasgow.

confidence was what won it and the fact that strac has scotland playing as a team...if you look at both squads i would say the irish are stronger ..take the back four all of the irish backs played their football in the english prem this year only one of the scottish backs do..midfield nobody in the scottish setup apart from morrison at west brom is a prem player...in fact your highest finishing player in the prem is naismith who is sits alot of his time in everton subs.. unlike coleman and macartey who are everton regulars...then you compare the front two fletcher unlike murphy is a prem player but for some strange reason O"neill left shane long (southampton) on the bench until the 80th minute..so on paper the irish look stronger however if as a team you are not playing with any confidence and cohesion then that team will always suffer
