Made this for a class project last year. Essentially, the reason for it was because I wanted to show what a good adaption looked like and couldn't find a similar video; making it myself was simply the only option. Spent about 7-8 hours editing?
I own nothing in this video, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life is by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Oni Press. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is directed by Edgar Wright and distributed by Universal Pictures.

That's because he's played by Michael Cera in the movie. Any character played by him immediately becomes like 3 times more awkward. It really wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad movie but to call it one of the best is a huge overstatement. A lot of backstory towards characters like Kim, Stills, Natalie(Envy), Knives and even the growth of characters like Scott and Ramona is ruined in this movie. Which isn’t the movies fault to an extent, they had to squeeze as much. They had to sacrifice a lot of character development, Scott doesn’t really grow in the movie. Comic Scott, gets a job, has a chance to cheat with Lisa but backs out, has closure with his previous 3 exes, spends months apart from Ramona in volume 6. Fights Gideon the first time without Ramona being there. He also confronts Nega Scott to finally accept his past mistakes and baggage. Ramona remains the quiet, stoic sarcastic girl she starts off as in book 1 in the movie. Comic Ramona, opens up to Scott and his friends, shows a insecure side of her with Lisa, gives a reason as to why her hair color changes and why she’s constantly changing her look. The treatment she inflicted on most of her exes (besides kinda Todd and Gideon) being put to light, showing her hypocritical side when the Twins call her out towards Scott of cheating and being no better than the evil exes. I like the movie but it’s far from perfect, if it gets made into a animated mini series then they’d be able to include everything the movie left out.
@RazB3rry1008
@RazB3rry1008 3 жыл бұрын
Joshua Foley yes, it’s not as good as the comics. The fact that everyone knows the movie and skips out on the comics is disappointing. Especially since Scott and Ramona barely grow as people in the movie. Characters like Stills, Wallace and Kim barely have roles. Wallace being Scott’s pep talk instead of Scott confronting Nega Scott.

It's a comic from the 00s about a bunch of people in their early 20s trying to get their lives together, except it's -actually- a video game styled story about a 23 year old having to defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes. It got a film adaptation in 2010 that's incredibly stylish and definitely worth the watch, but it compresses a LOT of detail from the comic. Unfortunately, that means that Scott doesn't get as much character development as he needs, and the rest of the cast get even less than that.

청춘 The reason Movie Ramona is so much colder than Book Ramona is because the original ending of the movie featured Scott picking Knives over her; making her apathetic made it easier for the audience to agree with Scott's choice. The reason why the film's original ending was different than the comics were because the film finished production by the time the 5th novel was released, so the Edgar Wright and the crew didn't know how the comics would've ended. After the final book was released, they reshot the ending to match the book. A lot of the differences with the two can be stemmed from the fact that they were being made at the same time as each other.

I wouldn't say every way. I think some things the movie did are way better (action scenes in the comics brought to life come across better in motion than in drawings, and some of the encounters with the exes are done better in the movie, like instead of Scott mentioning a deus ex machina he actually tricks Todd into breaking his veganism, the rock and roll kaiju fight with the twins, etc.)
@LeopoldLitchenstein
@LeopoldLitchenstein 3 жыл бұрын
@@birchtree6975 I made sure to avoid that by reading the comics and then watching the movie. This can sometimes benefit you but also detract, for example I decided to read about half the How to Train Your Dragon books before seeing the movie back when it was coming out 10 years ago and ended up disliking the movie as a result. Personally I think the 1:1 recreations of the comic panels and the references to it are great because they showed a great level of respect and passion for the source material, even down to recreating characters' costumes for each scene where appropriate and mostly casting actors who look about as close to the artstyle of the books as you can get. You don't really get that level of attention to detail in many adaptations, I think. And while not every change works there's some alterations that are handled pretty well. Seeing some of the panels in motion also made them a lot funnier and more entertaining than just the pictures were (which were already pretty funny at times) and the fact that a majority of the dialogue is ripped straight from the comic and still feels like it fits into the movie fine is nice. But I definitely get not liking the movie. I personally thought it was hilarious when I first watched it a couple weeks ago, loved the visuals, and thought the action was great, and it's honestly to the point that I'm thinking of watching it over again pretty soon due to just how much I love revisiting clips of it on YT and how much it blew me away visually, (something I honestly have never done with any other movie, even some I consider my all time favorites) but I will admit I was letdown in many areas. Like the time frame for the movie versus the books and just how much more shallow it ends up feeling due to this, and the omission of several characters and subplots due to time. Most of the female cast especially felt underused and underdeveloped in the film versus the books. But as is, I think it's probably one of the best comic book adaptations ever made in my opinion, up there with the 1990 TMNT movie.

The English Mentlegen why would a Netflix series be worse than the film? The film was great, but as films go, you know, being tops 2 and a half hours it has to cramp up a lot of shit. Most things that made me love the comics weren't even in the movie, and that's understandable, because it's a movie. But a TV show with at least six episodes could touch on a lot of stuff the movie didn't. So why would a Netflix show be worse in your opinion? I'm curious.

Well, Edgar Wright is extremely good at using visual comedy in Scott Pilgrim, and as a result it has become a cult classic of sorts. Its pretty unique as films go too, which makes me enjoy it a lot more. Netflix originals really haven't been consistent in terms of quality, I mean, sometime they are great like house of cards and stranger things, but they also have a lot of awful shit that gets cancelled after the first episode. As well as this, it is unlikely that Netflix would care enough about such a small franchise to give scott pilgrim as large of a budget as the film.

Maybe I'm just hella attracted to Mary but I know I not alone in that lol. Michael Cera is the perfect scott pilgrim in my eyes too. I honestly can't think of another actor who fits the comic mold, he's a little more confident in the comics and less anxious and like lowkey badass? but I kind of like the extreme anxiety of Scott in the movies and the way he was played, plus Michael Cera is Canadian like Scott unlike most of the people in the movie and that's a win in my books lol

I think graphic novels make for some of the most interesting film adaptations because the visuals are already there. It’s a matter of what the director makes of them, so there will always be the visual equivalent. Persepolis, for example, keeps the visual style, shortens many plot elements, and also gives certain characters more development and visual uniqueness. I consider it and the comic it’s based on to be of equal value, because each does something the other doesn’t while respecting the style of story being told.

As much as I love this movie, I can't help but feel it pales in comparison to the comic, mainly due to Michael Cera playing Scott as way more of an awkward loser than I feel he was in the comic - I mean he was still a loser, but he had this sort of snarky, sarcastic charm to him, and was more of a loser/slacker prick than the awkward geeky guy that Michael Cera plays. It's not a BAD performance at all, but compared to the Scott Pilgrim in the comic, who just has this sarcastic wit and almost pride in being a loser, I feel the movie doesn't give as great a character. Plus, Ramona Flowers is played to be emo, which isn't her character at all in the comics (in fact, since I saw the movie before reading the comic, I was super thrown off by how she was in the comics; more of a laid back skater chick whose more nonchalant and chill than emo or deadpan).

One thing to note about this comparison is that it glossed over this important detail: In the movie Scott tosses something at Matt, thereby taking him out himself. In the comics they make the power of friendship power pose, which IMO is one of the few faux pas the movie fixes. Afterall, Scott is oblivious to how dysfunctional his little circle is, and the comic actually kind of misdirects from that story detail by making them all have a "power of friendship" ability that they took out in the movie in favor of Scott doing it himself.

I think that Cera was 22 when the film was made, so they figured they'd just change it. I think he's good in the role! He's an awkward harmless nerd at first glance, so it's an amusing surprise when he starts air-juggling a pirate in the first fight scene. It's also a nice tie-in to the less pleasant parts of Scott's character: he's an awkward harmless nerd, who gets away with being an inconsiderate asshole to the people around him BECAUSE he's awkward and harmless. Most of the plot is the guy getting is shit together and actually taking responsibility for his actions, rather than just being "aww jeez I'm just a silly boy, I never meant to do anything wrong" as he cheats on his partners and repeatedly disappoints his friends and family.

I felt the same way after I watched it; it’s hard not to feel at times that Cera is in a different movie outright. His performance isn’t _bad_ either, it actually works pretty well in many respects - but coming off as an awkward dork changes the relationship dynamics between him and everyone in the story. I’ll bet that movie Ramona doesn’t come off quite as cold/mean if she’s playing off of a more abrasive and full-of-misplaced-confidence Scott, for example.
