How to Create and Edit Panel Borders in Clip Studio Paint

Since I'm getting a LOT of questions about it, the Page system on the left is part of EX and isn't available on the Pro version of Clip Studio Paint. If you have EX, just tick to Multiple Pages checkbox on the New Page dialogue box when you have Comic at the top (by Use of Work). I you don't have EX, you can just save a Preset for your pages, so they're all consistent. Hopefully that helps!

Hey guys! I've put together this pretty thorough overview of how to create comic panel borders and edit them in Clip Studio Paint. In this video, I go over how to set up your page to use borders, create the initial panel border, divide panel borders equally and on your own, as well as using your own brushes to make panel borders.
Hopefully this is helpful! If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. Thanks!

For those who have a newer version like me, the "work with other frame borders" under operation -> object doesn't exist. If you want to toggle the same thing, got to "keep gutters aligned" right above draw border.

A lot of people are asking about the Window with all the Pages on it on the left and "Work with Other Frame Borders"! The window is part of the Story Mode in the "EX" Version of Clip Studio Paint. You get it by selecting Multiple Pages. If you have the "Pro" version, you can't do this, but you can simply save your template and use that template when you're making a new page. Work with Other Frame Borders was changed to "Keep Gutters Aligned." Now you can change that to "None," "Horizontal and Adjacent" or "All." Gives you a few more options. Hope that helps!

I don't usually letter in CSP, but I usually letter in 6.5 pt font in Photoshop at this size, if that's helpful. I think it also depends on the font. You might want to print out a few different sizes and see what looks right on a page, or compare it to a comic page you're trying to emulate.

It always give me a slight angle no matter how careful I try to move it. Is there a way to lock the movement to horizontal/vertical angle only? like to make it move straight? Hi! Thanks for the helpful tutorial, I've been intimidated away from using the frame tool in CSP but this helped break it down well. I had a question I was curious if you could answer: I'm currently using CSP on a drawing tablet (ipad), so I don't have a shift key to use for snapping the frame divisions at those 90/45 degree angles. Is there any other way I could make those clean frame divisions?
@ScottD
@ScottD 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! You can check the "Step of Angle" box in the Tool Properties panel and set it to 45, so it'll snap to 45/90/etc. Also, if you swipe in from the side of the screen on the iPad, you get a secret CSP menu with the Shift/Alt/Ctrl buttons, plus some extra hot keys that are programmable.

Hey there, got any tips for if a character overlaps the panel border? Do you have to do it on a higher layer, or can you expand the panel mask (doesn't seem to work for me!)
@ScottD
@ScottD 5 жыл бұрын
I’ll usually put those layers above the panel border and then have a white layer in between the inks and panel border to mask off the border. There may be a way to mask the border, but this seems simplest for me, especially since I flatten all my inks before I color. I actually have a video posting tomorrow that shows exactly what you’re talking about, so sub or check back to check it out. :)

Yeah, since the panels are basically makes themselves, it doesn't look like it. You could put the panel border folder inside a group, then put a mask on that group, but that might be more trouble than it's worth.

You'll always lose a little definition when saving to a lossy format like JPG. You could try using the settings at the bottom of the export (comic vs illustration) and see if those make a difference. Hope that helps!

@ScottD

What I do is, for those areas, I ink on a layer above the panel, and then use a layer in between the border and the inks and white over the panel. Like in this video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aL2eo7Fns97cj5c.html If you want to color under this, you could put all the inks and borders into a folder and set that folder to multiply, and then have your colors below that folder, so that white layer won't mess with the colors. Hope that helps!

Great video! Do you know of a way to move a panel above/below other ones without having each panel on a separate layer/folder? I know I can make multiple panels on one folder and the order in which I place them determines what will be overlapped (the most recent one will overlap the previous ones). But maybe I want to go back and place a panel (already made) overlapping another. Only work around I've discovered is to select the panel, cut it, then paste. Just wondering if there was another/easier way. I hope that made sense.

Thanks! I think the way you described is, unfortunately, the only way to do it without having them on separate layers. I just do separate layers to avoid that. Makes things a little easier for me.

hey so i know this was quite a while ago but is there a way to partially erase panels? my comics tend to have eliments that break the borders of the panels and i dont really know how to do that

You can do this a couple different ways. If you're just inking, you can just have your line art on top of the Panel, and use white under the inks to block out the Panel. That's what I do in this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aL2eo7Fns97cj5c.html If you are coloring in CSP, too, I would put my Panels in a Folder, then put a Mask on the Folder to block out that part of the Panel. Then color on a Layer below the Folder containing the Panels. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the Tut man, verry helpful!! I Have a question though. I'm working in a more free hand kind of page, placing panels hère and there and moving them around . Is there a way to move around a panel with the content fixed in it? for them to be moved or scaled altogether??... Because when I try to move the borders, the inside doesn't follow I hope I make sense and you'll be able to answer. Thanks anyway

Glad it helped! And yes! If you select the layer with the border, then use the Move Layer tool (the black cursor with the up/down/left/right arrows next to it), it should move everything inside the layer. However, this will move ALL sides of the panel borders, not just one. I don't believe there's a way to move just one side of the border and have the content within move to match.

hey scott, i've been wondering do you know how to save the custom made panel? say that i create a weird looking panel, then i wanna use it again to the other page. Thanks in advance.

Okay, so custom panels are sort of weird. You basically have to delete everything else but the panel in your file and then go to Edit > Register Material... > Template to make the panel something that can be imported into other documents. Then go to the Materials panel in the file you want to import to, and find your Template that you just made. I wish there was a way to drag and drop panels from one file to another, but for now, this seems like the only way for me to get it to work. Let me know if you find an easier way or have any more questions! :)

I may have missed the explanation, but how do you open up ALL your pages on the leftside near the tools? And can you set a number to have there?

Sorry! That's an option in the EX version of the program that's not available in the Pro. You check the "Multiple Pages" box at the bottom, which creates a bunch of Page files all at once, plus another Story file that links them all together. It's sort of a handy feature, but isn't necessary. If you don't have that version, you can just save a Template when making your Page file.

Do you happen to know what the width of the edge of the panel line to the trim line using 11 x 17 BlueLine Art panel boards which will be reduced to standard comic size?

Check out this link to a template that Nate Piekos has set up for original comic art. I use this to set up dimensions when I want to make an 11x17 page. Good luck! :) blambot.com/pages/original-art-dimensions-for-american-standard-comics
