Has your laptop ever started to sound like a vacuum cleaner?
Cooling fans start spinning like crazy. If things get bad enough, your CPU can even overheat, halting the laptop and giving you a scary-looking error message.
To avoid such mayhem, you should dust inside your laptop twice a year.
It's pretty easy. Should your laptop be REALLY clogged up inside, you may need to get a little crazy and start opening things up.
But don't panic! KZfaq will save you...

Yea, I've done this on a few laptops. One time the vents were gunked up with grease from living above a fast food place, imagine black grease with a load of dust stuck to it all in the vents. I had to clean it with isopropanol and pipe cleaners. It worked a treat afterwards though, I put some good grade thermal paste on the CPU and GPU which improved performance and stability.

How to clean out dust inside your laptop: Frequency: -Twice Per Year Tools: - Compressed Air A) BASIC CLEANING Step 0: Completely turn off Computer Step 1: Identify Vents Identify where it sucks in cool air and where it pushes it out. Most suck air from the bottom and push it out the hot air from the side vents. *Some suck air from keyboards Step 2: Blow out Vents You want to spray the compressed air into the Output & Input vent. B) ADVANCED CLEANING: Declogging Cooling Fans Tools: - Screw Driver - Bravery - Optional: Tweezers Preface: Perform this when the laptop is still making noise after your basic cleaning. Basically we need to Get into the Cooling fans, wads of dust are clogging it. Step 0: Do a youtube search for the model number of your computer cleaning. Aka "Hp 69420 Dissassembly" Step 1: Remove the back of the laptop Step 2: Identify where the cooling fan is. Should look like a fan with blades and be near one of the the vents. Step 3: Remove the screws if neccessary Step 4: Blast

Those 'fins' are a heat exchanger/radiator, if you remove the fan assembly you will often see a 3 or 4 mm layer of fluff choking it. Since the fan shroud is in contact with the 'radiator' this fluff can not be seen until fan assy. is removed..

I likw this video. It doesn't have the same confidence as everyone else where it's like "hey it's so easy to just disassemble your entire computer." You actually give people the advice to just spray through the vents and the video is structured in a progression of escalating things to do. It also admits it can be hairy for a first timer and that while it's good to try doing it yourself, don't overdtep your boundaries. Having needing to do this for the first time myself, spraying air from the outside or taking the cover off is good and all but if I start needing to unscrew components that's where I'd stop.

The problem with spinning fans isn't really the bearings (larger fans are heavier/slower anyway), it's mainly the voltage created by them spinning (motors are turbines, turbines are motors)

Hey scottie, mine's making noise and I never cleaned my fan (I'm pretty certain this is the issue of my laptop), will using compressed air on the vents push the dust deeper in? Just wondering as a complete noob!
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 2 жыл бұрын
The air must have a way in and out in order to cool the system properly. So, compressed air should work pretty well. In some cases, the actual cooling fan might have "scummy dust" stuck to it, and that won't come off... I had to remove the panel on the bottom of the lappy to really clean the fan off... But I've only encountered that once!

What was the reason for doing the output first and the input second? Wouldn't you want to keep the direction of flow constant? i.e., input then output, assuming the output isn't blocked?
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 2 жыл бұрын
Dust usually accumulates at the input side of the thin heatsink fins. So, by blowing air in reverse (in the output), that tends to loosen the dust and fuzz and blast most of it out the input vents. Then you blast in the input to clear out any remaining smaller bits. At least that's how I do it, and it seems to work well!

Dunno if this will be seen but from what I've seen aren't you supposed to only go in short bursts for the compressed air since apparently long bursts can "damage" it?
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 4 жыл бұрын
If you blast air in long enough, you can possibly spin the cooling fans up faster than they are designed to be spun. That could potentially damage the bearings. That said, I've never managed to wreck a fan in this way. So, I'd say to be aware of it, but don't sweat it.

i didnt get it. If you are using compressed air, it is going to push the dust particle inside the system right?
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 4 жыл бұрын
The cooling system must suck air in at one place, absorb heat, and blow it out another place. So, if you blast the input and output vents, the majority of the dust will be removed. Think of it like forced air heating in a house. Cold air sucked in one place, heated, and blown out through different vents.

@@ScottiesTech So should I just give up on trying to fix my laptop and buy a new one or I can like the change the fan or something? Also the laptop isn't that old. @@RealElevenTimes You can probably replace it. I usually search YT for the laptop make/model + 'replace fan' and more often than not, somebody's made a video showing how to get it apart. Well, some laptops are a royal pain to take apart, but often it's not so difficult and just requires a bit of patience. And a small screwdriver or two!

The first thing I'd look it is Task Manager (right-click Start button, click Task Manager). See More Details and then sort by CPU usage. That'll show you what's eating all your processing power. If that doesn't reveal anything, check free disk space and free up space if necessary. If that's not it, usually it's some background task like antivirus protection/scanning, search indexing, etc. Last but not least, it might just be old and slow!

Helpful, thank you. Although, you might want to edit your video to say turn the laptop off before you spray the vents. So far, my laptop seems to be ok.

Super Walmart has them though you usually need to ask at the electronic department desk as they are usually not on the shelves themselves in my experience.

At room temperature, yes, compressed air is fine. Just don't do it outside in the middle of Siberia in the winter! ;)

You usually don't need to. Sometimes, there are air vents underneath the keys on the keyboard, but that's rare.

If you have a HDD, you could try to set up a custom pagefile. On a SSD, it's not recommended to go over 1 GB to avoid increased decay.
