Got me crying. Most of my family has served in the millitry and we have been extremely fortunate that everyone has made it home. But just because someone makes it home it doesn't mean they came home fine. There is a disconnect between the civilian population and the military population. There is this very real idea that if we honor them enough, thank them enough, they will just reintegrate into society and move on. I like how this song says" they taught me how to put their uniform on but not how to take it off." We expect them to stop being soldiers, sailors, airman, marines, once the uniform is put away but so much of their lives have been dedicated to being what we asked them to be.

I wish I had the words to fully convey the gratitude that I have for you. What you do across the ocean... Being from another country says what is difficult for us to say. I know you don't romanticize war but your admiration for the country and the sacrifices that many here have made is genuinely received and heart felt. Yes, America has made many mistakes but in all of her mistakes there has been a deep commitment to try and protect those who cannot protect themselves. The men in this video are living proof of that commitment. I am deeply touched by you. Thanks again.

Don Father, this strikes me to the heart, as you have a knack for doing. I've not had the honor of serving, but relatives have who now suffer with PTSD. I was married for 25 years to a lady who suffered all the years I knew her with PTSD and depression from childhood abuse. She died nearly 6 years ago from complications due to conditions that resulted from her medications and lack of good care by nursing home staff. Now I have depression, or at least that's what it feels like. So I really can identify with this video and your genuine reaction to it. Thanks from my heart, Don Father.

Having dealt with the immediate aftermath of 9-11 I had my own PTSD to deal with. I don't put myself even close to the same category as these heroes, but I do want to say something about PTSD. Recovery is possible. I know it's originally classified as a "disorder" but that's changing to PTSI, or Post Traumatic Stress Injury. It's not something that has to last forever and much like a broken leg, you can heal. For anyone out there feeling hopeless......please, find the help you need. I reached a point where I couldn't leave my apartment, I was having sleep terrors, screaming at people not to jump, waking my boyfriend up and telling him we had to evacuate the building (he would tell me the next day and I thought he was losing it!). I had multiple escape routes out of New York planned and I obsessed over them. Fortunately my boyfriend helped me find help that came to my home and that's where we started. Eventually I had a service dog that literally made it possible for me to venture out of the apartment and rebuild my life one day at a time until I was able to go back to school and now I'm a nurse and I work with people who are dealing with trauma of some sort every day. There's help.....and you can get better. Please tell someone you love or pick up the phone and call a therapist or a crisis counselor....they will help you. The path to healing isn't always direct, and it's not always easy, but it's definitely possible. God bless.

The National Guard often gets overlooked. Many National Guard troops served in Iraq and Afghanistan. My friend's son came back from his first tour seemingly just fine. The first time there was a thunderstorm, my friend heard a noise and went in to check on him and found this 6'3" big, ol' country boy, who learned to hunt and fish when he was a little kid and wasn't scared of anything.......found him hiding under the bed, shaking like a leaf and crying. He begged his dad not to tell his Mom. He went back for 2 more tours and thankfully came back. Hats off to the National Guard troops who served in the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts.

Immediate tears. I know too many that suffer from this after returning and it is seen almost immediately. I have picked up kids or had them run to my house for the night and I think it’s key to have some place for kids to be able to go for the night so the Veteran can be focused on without their children seeing it and getting scared . I have close family and my daughter that deal with this on a daily basis. Too many will not get help or if they do the meds don’t always help them . My son relives his time with the 101st Airborne in Iraq and Afghanistan every single day. Along with the PTSD and TBI, he has survivor's guilt. Unfortunately, he drinks to forget and to numb the pain. I'm afraid he will become one of the suicide statistics if he continues on the path of destruction he is on. I grew up an Army brat, married Army, my kids were Army brats. When I found out my son had enlisted, I cried. I knew that every momma who sees her son off to Basic Training is also seeing him off to War. There are no winners in war - EVER! The "victors" spend every day regretting every shot they made and every life they took. I will ALWAYS remember the ONLY thing my son said about his experience. He said, "Mom, you've NEVER had to look a little kid in the eyes and know you're the reason his dad is never coming home again." That statement broke my heart.

My Great Uncle was in the Great War in Europe. He came home with"shell shock" as PTSD was called then. In the hospital therapy was learning how to make latch hook rugs. The only job he could do was a third shift security work. He lived in my grandmother's ( his sister) basement. Besides rent he spent his money on cigarettes, alcohol and latch hook rugs. He never recovered. He rarely ate anything. He didn't socialize with people besides family. If I was at grandma's house, he would come out of the basement to sit by me. He would not speak much. As a young child under 5 years old I didn't understand it. I wish I could go back to tell him how much I loved him and give him a hug. I remember being afraid of him because of the silence. My parents tried explaining it to me but I didn't understand his sacrifice to our world and freedom. PTSD has been around for a long time but was never treated because it wasn't understood. Sorry for the long comment. I just needed to tell someone. Thank you for your vlogs and your service. All military need to be respected and appreciated.
