"Speak o' th' Devil" was a common expression where I grew up in the US back in the fifties, so I don't think it's particularly Scottish. We also used to call "running off at the mouth" having a case of "oral diarrhoea".

Yeah I didn't think that one was particularly Scottish but we use it SO MUCH here I wanted to include it just in case anyone didn't know what it meant! I don't think it will be used globally after all, probably only in English Speaking countries.

"Speak o' th' Devil" is also common in Texas, but Texas and Tennessee (as well as many other places in North America) have strong Scottish ancestry.

In Sweden we have our own version of 'speak of the Devil', which is 'när man talar om trollen', which literally means 'when you talk about the trolls'.

Exactly what I expected from the Swedish! ;) In German it's "Wenn man vom Teufel spricht" and has the same meaning as "speak of the Devil", only it's " _When_ you speak of the Devil " ... you know, we Germans love to put unnecessary words into our sentences. :)

Yup. I used to have a German friend who did a rather terrible job of trying to explain German to me. It's a very confusing (but still nice) language.

I always say, German is an engineers' language. It's not the best language in the world for expressing feelings and emotions, but it's usually pretty precise and detailed. :)

we use to say plum tuckered,and we say off your rocker for outta your head. there's lots for that one. touched in the head,or a brick shy of a load. love your videos subscribed about four months ago and haven't missed one yet. I really like these keep them coming.

"I'm fair puckled" - US has something similar, "plumb tuckered out". Pretty old slang though, not something you'd hear nowadays. "Speak o' th' Devil" - Yup, US has this one. "Yer aff yer heid" - Closest would be like, "you're out of your mind". "Dinnae cast a cloot until Mays oot" - This is a new one. "A nods as gud as ah wink tae ah blind horse" - I am almost sure that there's an equivalent in US slang, but it's not coming to me. Your Vauxhall Corsa example makes me think of the Baader-Meinhof effect, though. "Yer bums oot the windae" - or, in US English, "you're talking out your ass". "Dinnae be a wee clipe" - "Snitches get stitches".

Final Warrior "a nods....blind horse" sounds most like "You can lead a horse to water" or possibly "six one way, half a dozen the other" unless I am understanding it incorrectly.

Sometime ask your viewers how the phrase on your shirt should have ended. I had fun with your "All who wander" shirt in your Scottish Age Restrictions video. I was already thinking of new phrases when I noticed that the question was answered too quickly. Still enjoyed the video. You are such a charmer.

You are correct, Michael. Thanks for citing the whole poem. It has been a while since I read it. I was referring to her video where we could only see part of the message so I proposed some endings. (The "Scottish Age Restrictions" video about a year ago.) For the shirt in this video I was thinking along the lines of "...be with a Molotov cocktail and a lighter." Or "...a bottle of Macallan and a Speedo." Or "...rose petals, a Pinot blanc wine, lube and jumper cables."

Really enjoy your videos. I have a strong desire to visit Scotland since I found out that my 5th great grandfather was from Dunfermline, Scotland and moved to Kentucky, USA about 1750. I've traced that family line back to 1649 all of them from Dunfermline.

"Cast ne'er a clout till may be out" means don't go out without your coat until the may blossom is on the trees, not until the end of the month of May as most people think. I always thought it was a Lancashire saying, but I could be mistaken.

David R Bellairs That's always been my interpretation too. "Don't lose (cast) a layer of clothing until May is over coz it's bound to get cold again". I've also heard it used in a general sense of "don't count your chickens before they've hatched", i.e. Don't get ahead of yourself.

Nae cast a cloot used to mean 'Don't take off your vest until after May is finished. Nothing to do with hanging out your washing, because if you have to wait for a drying day in Scotland, you will wait forever!

in the U .S. we use two of those , the speak of the devil is very common over here. and much less used is the , the nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse, it's used when two people will use a signal around a third person ( blind horse ) who will be unaware of it's meaning. so signal me either way and I'll understand.

We in America say a more American version of "You're off your head" to mean crazy, along with "speaking of the devil". Great video!

Ne'er cast a cloot... I have always thought it meant do not remove your coat and put it away for the summer until the end of May (some sources state it has nothing to do with the month of May rather the May [plant] blossom).

We have, "speak of the devil" in USA and NZ. We have, " your off, you're head" in America. Definitely Americanized but same. I love your explanation of "yer bums in the windie" I like visualized it in my head and started giggling.

speak of the devil is common in America as well! I use it all the time. Another similar one is, "your ears must've been burning". When you're talking about someone and they walk over, even if they didn't hear that you were talking about them, you'd say this.

I tend to hear "Yer aff yer nut" rather than heid, and "Don't be a grass" instead of clipe. My mum says clipe though. Never heard of the cloot one.

we say your out of your head, or he/she is out of his or her head, we all so he/she is off their rocker, means the same thing

So here's what I think.. Scottish accent sound so different to EVEN Scottish people, that when they spoke this phrase: "You're Out of you Head??" a lot (fast paced).. it sounded like an encrypted phrase to the next generation: "Yer aff yer heid !?", and for the non-Scottish people, it's just as random as any other language, but interestingly, even for Scottish people, it's a unique phrase now !?! WOW
