Hey gang! The microtransactions tangent was definitely poorly worded and thought out. Since these videos are unscripted, I can sometimes have a hard time making a point, I think what I was trying to get at was how all the requirements for games on Amico would make it a tough sell for developers (No games rated above E10+, no direct ports, etc.) and one of the only requirements I could think of at the time was the microtransactions one, so I think I was trying to make it make sense coming out of my mouth and it did NOT. Sorry about that!

7:32 There is also an issue, especially with PC games, where testers can play a game fine for several times but as soon as it ships, there are bugs and stuff that people encountered that testers didn't, or the bugs only came up and are being worked on long after the game had gone gold and is about to be shipped, hence the frequent Day One patches.
@AbsolXGuardian

The day one audience of a game is miles bigger than an QA department and in much more varied circumstances. This is especially true for the PC ports of games, which will be played on a variety of systems. Jedi Survivor shipped to PC fine, unless you were running the newest and best hardware. Respawn probably never tested on systems like that because it would be a waste of budget to obtain a top tier brand new gaming PC. And besides, why would a computer being too good cause problems? Well guess what, it did.

If anyone is unfamiliar with Tommy Tallarico, or the Intelevision Amico, Pat The Nes Punk has a bunch of clips from his podcast talking about the console, their thoughts, Tommy's tall tales that he spun to dupe investors, the list of smaller youtubers that Tommy used to attack people who's coverage wasn't favorable, all of the lies and slander that Tommy publically said on an Atari forum where he spent most of his time the last few years, and all the other hilarious Amici related hijinks. This was a rabbit hole that I fell deep into, and it's one of the most hilarious and baffling things I've witnessed. Also, if you ever played Roblox, or know of the "OOF" sound, Tommy is the guy who threatened legal action to get it removed. Also, fun fact, they messed up the font for Biplanes, and then tried to say that it was a limited variant, rather than flat out saying they made a mistake

To explain the Day 1 update debacle; I work for a rather large game studio and simply put, the reason for day 1 updates are (mostly) because of physical releases. It takes time to print millions of CD’s for different consoles so the developers end up having to send a Version 1.0 to the publisher WEEKS ahead of launch. The developer in the meantime will keep working on the game and making bug fixes, all of which will be available to players as a Day 1 patch. As a side note, there will always be bugs in new video games too, since the amount of play time you’ll have on Day 1 is potentially millions of hours more than all the combined play testing you could’ve had during development. This means that a bug that occurs for every 1-in-100,000 play throughs, which could potentially never have been seen by the devs, will seem so common that people will scratch their heads and poke jokes. Again, this is why Day 1 updates are important as there would be so many more bugs and overall reception wouldn’t be as nice. And before you say “Just ship the game when it’s finished?”, there are massive marketing budgets put in to a game’s release and changing the dates because of a few bugs would increase those budgets dramatically. When you see marketing for a game, it means they have a set release date. When you see a set release date, that means the game isn’t finished yet BUT is in good enough shape that they will meet these deadlines
@MegaZeta

Scott, while I certainly agree with you on game updates (mostly*), but microtransactions on pay-to-play games are gross because often times these games are designed to manipulate players into buying them by making the games increasingly difficult to progress. It's much the same with free-to-play games, but at least with them the microtransactions are their only source of income so with them I'm more willing to accept them as a necessary evil. However, if the games industry needs microtransactions to remain profitable, then maybe the reason is because they utilize overly bloated budgets and for that maybe they should collapse. Because most of the companies utilizing microtransactions are Ubisoft, Activision (Blizzard), and EA. If you told me that removing microtransactions would lead to the collapse of those three companies I would tell you that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make! *It really depends on the game. If the game has a solid foundation, but is just rough around the edges and just needs some optimization (like Hogwarts Legacy), then I'm willing to allow it some updates to get good. But if it's more like Fallout 76 or Anthem, then the game can go die in a fire.

Even in the early 90's they made updates to games. Secret of Mana came out in Japan with a bug, where if you pressed buttons during the death animation of a boss, you would be stuck in the boss room afterwards / no door or passage would ever open for you to go out again. This was fixed for the North America version. I think that's a good thing?

I highly disagree with Scott about patches and DLCs. Games should be complete day one. Otherwise, you won't be able to play them correctly in the future. For example: when the PS3 closes its digital store, many games will become unplayable, since you won't be able to download patches that fixes the games, and you won't get the complete game, 'cause you can't download a DLC anymore.

It’ll be harder, but not impossible. You can easily buy a hacked console (depending on the game, not even that is necessary), download said patch from an internet archive, put it in the right folder on your console and ur set. While I really wish day one updates weren’t a thing, its just an unreasonable thing to ask for given the size of games nowadays. No amount of people can both develop and perfect a 100 GB+ collection of data within a few years, especially for PC games which would require vigorously testing thousands of different setups.
@alexbrezny6108
@alexbrezny6108 6 ай бұрын
This isn't even considering the fact that day one updates are largely also an inherent artifact of the fact that we still have physics media also the fact that game developers aren't unionized which is a bit of a political topic but it does affect the working conditions of developers especially with crunch being so prevalent. My point is that for a lot of games there's a week or two before launch where the game has gone gold where the game is going to be physically pressed onto Blu-ray discs. Typically developers keep on working on the game after it is pressed but before it comes out. Often this is the case for smaller teams who don't have so many games in the pipeline like IO interactive or Remedy or rockstar even. Studios where they focus on one or two games for every so many years. This argument also falls apart when talking about multiplayer games which rely on there being a certain number of servers being available for all of the players. The larger something is the more complicated the backend for their servers will be because the off-the-shelf solutions just fall apart. You know that the larger games are going to need custom solutions like the call of dutys and counter strikes of the world. What about games that explode in popularity after they are released like Among Us or Palworld. These were made by small teams that didn't design their online to be able to sustain 1 million concurrent players because not every indie game can do that because often they have limited resources and spending that much money on a feature when you don't know how popular something is going to be is risky.

In Atari's defense, the VCS was at the very least an actual product with some justification for its existence. On a hardware level it's basically just a mini PC, and Atari actually used to make PCs back in the day (IE the Atari 800) so it's not that outlandish; it's not bad for what it is, but Atari screwed the pooch by trying to market it as a full blown console that could only play decades-old games and the remakes they've been publishing, instead of as a mini PC that could theoretically boot up Steam games. As for the Amico, I've got nothing.
