I thought I would get old rusty the Tamiya King Hauler Rc Truck and show you wonderful people how to make real rust using some very simple techniques, no paint or weathering powders just real metal, real texture, real rust.
Its the most authentic looking rust you can find because its real..

BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!! Simple, very effective. I'm surprised that none of the Truckers have pointed out that Pete and Kenworth Fenders are FIBREGLASS! 😜😵 But that's not the point, is it? ... Ere in the Commie States of America, Craft Stores sell a two part Patina Kit, that also makes real Rust. One Bottle of Iron impregnated Acrylic Paint (probably the SAME Iron Dust you have!), and a Bottle of Saline Accelerator. (Also like you made!) But the paint does provide better adhesion. So, I'm guessing that if you used Clear Paint instead, you could achieve even better results, for far less than one of these Kits. 😉 Here in Arizona, we have to seriously FORCE things to Rust. You can actually see Cars driving around here with the Paint sandblasted off - and zero Rust! That IS a really clever idea though!! Artist's Rust Kits aren't available everywhere....

..... And you're right, Weathering Powders are good for Model Railroading (I've done it for years). But these are TOO big for that to look convincing.

I never knew that and that will come in handy for future builds should I weather anything, I know to leave the arches alone.. I only really did it on this for demonstration purposes so it can be easily removed and I can rust other areas 😊😊 I just presumed they did as the Pete in the movie duel looks to be rusty, however I'm colour blind believe it or not so things may not be as I see them at times 😊😊👍

I have tried my weathering powders in the past and as you say the scale doesn't quite suit it, but dotted around an n gauge or oo gauge railway you actually benefit the depth of the dust, everything is all trial and error and I'm always learning as I go and KZfaq is the perfect place to share with others looking for help, it's always good to get stuff wrong too to be corrected like with the fenders being fibreglass.. 😊😊👍

@@scotty555babe Yeah, that's Hollywood!! 😝 Up until the early 70's... rusting Fenders (Wings) was a big, expensive problem. Obviously Trucks cover many miles, especially here. Mack was actually the first to go Fibreglass. The others quickly followed. I did a lot of research before I started my Smokey and the Bandit W900A...... which ended up being a W900C, because the quad round Headlights were too much $$. By 1980, everything but the Hood, Doors, corner Panels and internal Framework of the Cab was Fibreglass! I only brought that up because of potential nit-pickers! They can be annoying !!🙄 I'm impressed by your creativity!

Have you ever tried iron oxide powder? I’m guessing you have access to these shavings? I use oxide for bigger stuff and the ole steel wool and vinegar for 1/25 and smaller. I like the fact it keeps rusting forever changing the look.

The change over time is amazing, quite therapeutic in a funny sort of way.. Ive done the steel wool and vinegar before, sometimes the steel wool for kitchen cleaning turns rusty as you clean, never used iron oxide but I could probably get some from the wrought iron works where I got my filings, I'm curious to try that now 👍
