I have watched and learned from many of Scotty's video but this one...PUMP THE BRAKES!! He starts off by saying NEVER clean the engine then ends with why it's best to keep a clean engine. I have been working on cars for YEARS and nothing is better than working on a clean engine. I always promote washing engines because like Scotty says as well as many others here, a clean engine helps with finding leaks especially small oil, and transmission leaks. Also oil and dirt build up creates a layer that causes the engine to not cool. Yes the radiator coolant keeps the car from over heating but also air passing over the outside of the engine and tranny does as well. I have been washing engines for years and NEVER had an issue. I use the engine degreaser then high pressure spray it off, even spraying the SEALED electrical parts. I do not wait until the engine has cooled because a warm engine also help evaporate the rinse water as I drive the car off from the car wash. Every mechanic that I have encountered has said they would rather work on a clean engine rather than a dirty oily engine because a lot of time the dirt contaminates the new parts and the oils makes the nuts and bolts slip on the tools! SO CLEAN THOSE ENGINES. They run cooler and are easier to maintenance.

I agree with everything you said except for "I do not wait until the engine has cooled." You make it seem like the engine is operating temp by saying you were at a car wash. Never rinse a hot or even operating temp engine you will destroy the metal by thermal shock.

There is a big difference between a car enthusiast and a mechanic: cleanliness. Most mechanics snap on parts and never clean the surrounding areas, and a car enthusiast will spot clean with a toothbrush everything. The car is the reflection of who you are.
@kcguti86
@kcguti86 Жыл бұрын
There's also a big difference in knowledge of cars between mechanic and enthusiasts. Also big difference between a Car detailer and a mechanic. Enthusiasts know about looks, the features, they put a premium on aesthetics, ride and technology, needless to say a mechanics knowledge is more comprehensive and definitive, they know each brands weakness and strengths, the engineering pros and cons, because they're the ones who actually deal with the issues. This is why I don't listen to KZfaq "car enthusiasts" featuring cars for buyers, I ask seasoned mechanics. Most "enthusiasts" don't even know how a combustion engines works, they do cosmetic work but can't do maintenance work. Also, cannot fault mechanics for not having the time to clean their engine bay and its so time consuming as it is detail work, my uncle was a mechanic and sometimes they're so dead tired they would fall asleep with some grease still on them. If you don't know how a garage runs, you wouldn't know why mechanics are the way they are. They put cosmetics behind practicality and function.

@@for.w.07.20 no, it won't....I worked for an access a ride fleet, and we pressure washed every SINGLE car like clockworks, including the engine bays. Same with the forklifts. Unless your literally pointing a pressure washer directly at a sensor trying to break it, you won't run into any issues. Everything important is pretty much covered. Just don't do it with super high pressure. Pretty much every fleet vehicle has their engine cleaned as part of routine maintenance and they run for 200,000 miles plus like nothing....you have to really be trying to stall your car after an engine wash

After cleaning my engine at my next oil change they pointed out three oil leaks and two CV joint leaks. Currently dealing with these problems now at a total cost of about $1,300. All I can figure is my gaskets and seals were old and brittle and broke down from the degreaser or that the dirt and grime were what was holding it all together, lol. We live and we learn.

I have used water hoses/carwash pressure washers to clean my cars engine bays for years and have never had a single issue, granted I take most of my cars to car shows and events but all I do is not directly spray the electronics and intake, if I have to get close to electronic I always disconnect the negative battery terminal or if close to the intake (cold air or pod filter) I cover it with a plastic bag. Then wait for it to dry decently and remove any pooled water with microfiber cloths. Never failed me or caused me a single issue and a clean engine is MUCH more pleasant to work on than a dirty, greasy one.

The way I was thought by a professional car detailer is this: Disconnect the negative off the battery. Brush all that you can before you apply water or degreaser. Brush all the dust and grime that you can get, then blow it off with an air compressor. Next is to apply the degreaser of choice and scrub all you can using a variety of brushes from small to big, plastic and copper wire. Then carefully rinse it off avoiding all the electronics like alternator and fuse box. Next is to blow all the water off with an air compressor and let everything dry completely.

When people see that you keep your stuff clean (house, car, etc..) they will typically treat your stuff better. If you need to drop off your car at the mechanic and it is clean on the inside, they will take care not to leave a grease stain in it. If there is grease and grime build-up in the engine bay, it will make it easier for your mechanic to find the issue. They will be more happy to work on it vs. having to find a leak or damaged component in an engine bay covered in grease and grime. It's just a good habit. Cleaning the engine bay does not have to require taking a pressure washer to it, you can simply use some different size brushes and shop towels. I have been complimented by my mechanic on my 19-year old truck, when he saw how clean it is, it almost sounded like he wanted to buy it from me. Of course, I'm not selling it. I just want to keep it running.

@Just ME Onlyme haha you guys think your experience is the only experience. Salty said his reason for pressure washing is to clean old gunk off, how can you tell him its wrong application? Lol Anyway when pressure washing engines or anything really your tip is generally 1-2 feet away from surface, psi is greatly reduced down to a fraction of what pressure washer puts out. If that is enough to hurt gaskets, they were already failing, sure it can get in a fresh crack and cause issues. I detailed cars for 4 years, pressure washed 8-12 engines a day. Never once had anyone come back with an issue of any sort (gasket or electrical)

I work in a professional detail shop and we’ve never washed engine bays until recently. Kind of Ironic that the 1st engine we washed ended up breaking down on a test drive for water in the cylinders.... haven’t done it since.

Haha haha, what did you use a fire hose, common sense is not required anymore that's why the problem. Don't stick the hose in the exhaust pipe next time.

And some poeple suggests just because they did it for 20 whatever years it truly doesn't mean nothing happens. It does at least the integrity of the car is impacted some how and the car probably too old doesn't have the modern sensors today's car do. So that's why it is affected is just no sensors to tell it.

Goodness this video would've been helpful a couple days ago. I was washing my car and decided to wash my engine bay too... I took it out later that night and it went into limp mode and wouldn't go over 3kRPM. I let it sit over night and it did go away so i might've gotten lucky but damn lesson learned!

I also like a clean engine, too! So much more pleasant to work on, even if I'm just doing an oil change. That being said, I would never clean the engine bay myself. Too risky, since I don't know what to cover up. I leave that to my detailer. He knows how to clean the engine bay without harming the electronics.

There are only two reasons to clean your engine . 1. As you said Oil Leaks. 2. If your using your car as a show car in which case most people take their show car to professionals to get cleaned properly.

I love you Scottie but I’m a professional detailer and I’ll have to disagree with this one .A lot of my customers like to have there hot rods and classic cars engines detailed for car shoes like my most recent customer the other day had a 57 bel air .Its avtuakly good to clean your engine bay every 20k miles or so you can see if there’s any oil or drips or anything leaking .You don’t rinse or clean a engine when it’s warm you wait until the engine is cool to the hand .Things that don’t get wet like electrics and alternator get covered.Just my thoughts .

I clean every car and truck engine I own, and OMG I use a 4000 psi hot water pressure washer! You would have thought I would have totaled one out by now? This includes a new Z06 Vette and a new A6 Audi along with all the other before and never a problem. I keep them as clean as possible because it makes it so much easier to find and problems if you ever have one and even though the radiator takes care of the majority of the cooling there is still some cooling based on the surface area of the engine and trans itself! I have been washing all my engines in everything for 45 years now and NOT 1 PROBLEM EVER!!!!
