Hey Scotty, I was looking into this Honda Civic that looked super clean, so I asked if I can see the car and check it out. I also asked to see what work been done on the car and if it needs work. It’s $800 bucks, but I wanted to ask if it’s even worth it to get. Also the guy never replied back

Basically he had to remove the motor mounts so the engine could be low enough so he reach up inside. Honda is notoriously bad with that. The older Honda's are a bit better space wise and a bit easier to work with. As much as he'd say not to I had a 1994 accord with 275k on the engine that ran beautifully

That's modern cars for you. They want you at the garage to pay their mechanics fees. My wife's uncle used to have an Alfa Romeo, needed an alternator, engine out job. Ouch

You know it’s amazing, I’m a nurse and I assisted in many surgeries and when I watch a mechanic work the way this man does it blows me away it’s like watching a surgeon do an operation, you have to know where every part is and goes after you move all those parts around. Scotty you’re one amazing dude! Mechanics don’t get the appreciation they deserve.

I have the same car. I did this whole job without jacking it up or taking the mount off. You just need to take the alternator off to get the rest of the stuff off.

I give you credit Scotty. I’m in my mid 40’s and working on my cars takes a huge toll on my body. Sometimes a simple control arm change takes me 2 hours to complete because frequent breaks are needed to alleviate pain in my back and arms. You on the other hand make it look like child’s play even at your age. Thanks for another diy video. Those types of videos is why I watch your channel.

You mean the torque? I've noticed too. But yes, you can safely tighten bolts with an impact if you have the experience. I can't, but I know it can be done no problem.

Top tip, Never take off a wheel and rest it on the car. Garage did it to me once, we didn't know rear brake wheel cylinder had started to leak, brake fluid was on the tyre so took paint off car body 😯

I know a guy that took the wheel off and had it resting on the bumper while he was putting the spare tyre on. He let the jack down but the wheel was part jammed under it, put a hole through bumper and cracked the headlight lens. Ouch

I had this problem on my 2012 Civic at 165,000 km. I can confirm that my after market replacement part has already started making a sound after only 25,000 km. Honda parts are the way to go, I guess.

I have a 2015 Civic Sedan with 5 speed manual. I bought it at two years old with 9,000 miles on it, been a very reliable car, good gas mileage and I enjoy driving it.

Think you can do this more easy. First remove the plastic fender liner in the wheel arch. Then you can directly unbolt the tensioner.

I have a 03 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 and it has 120,000 miles on it. Never had a problem and I'm still driving it. Only changed the lower oil pan gasket and valve cover gaskets. Runs great!

my stepdad has a 2001 Ford Sport Trac with 215k miles. It has the 4.0L V6 and the rear timing chain rattles at times.

8:35 for me It was the windshield wipers that were vibrating, I thought it was the dash board too until one of the mechanics told me it was the loose black trim the wipers were attached too. They tried to make me pay $200 for a new one but I just bought a $20 windshield black sealant and put it under and sealed it. 90% the noise is gone. Only does it when on a bumpy road.

I just did one on an 04 element. Below the intake manifold. I decided to go from underneath...in all honesty I have no idea if it saved time or not, just a horrible job...

yeah real nice.. 2015 and already needed a new tensioner assembly.. but what's that.. had to literally dismount the engine and jack it up 8 inches, then drop it down 6 inches below where it would be mounted, rinse and repeat a few times... are you kidding me? First gen mazda 3 far superior to that piece of junk.. super easy to work on just take off a front wheel and the splash guard.. wow job done.. but a 2004 mazda 3 with 300,000km still doesn't need the tensioner replaced on the belts or timing chain... why is the 2015 civic such a piece of junk?/

I wouldn't try that repair job myself. The potential for disaster seems high, like oops, the engine fell out! I'm actually amazed that you can move the engine around like that with the tranny attached.

It's amazing what you can see when you take the tires off... really helped with the fuel filter on my Dodge 2500 Cummins. Cursing is an essential part of any repair... When engineers go to hell, they have to work on the cars they designed!

All you need to do to get the tensioner out is remove the alternator. Removing the Motor mount , water pump pulley, tire and jacking the engine up is not necessary

look this man is the best. I learned from him and other sources online to fix my car. I just installed new brackets on it. He has a since of humor about something very serious well all feat. Broken transmission engine mounts. Its not a bug deal. Be good to your car service it when needed and listen to him.Ive used public transportation 4 times! fixed and bought new cars. Its not a big deal .

thanks for the video. i had same issue with a 2009 honda civic. the engine mount failed a long time ago and didnt notice it. once i started hearing a similar noise to this one, did i figure out the belt tensioner had failed because of the engine mounts having failed a long time ago.

Did that on my sisters 06 Toyota Camry. Took me 12 hours because I broke the nut on the tensioner pulley and had to go run around for 3 hours to try and get one. Those tensioners are hydraulically actuated and aren’t like the ones I was used to working on which use spring tension. So if you ever do this job be aware that when you go to release tension on the tensioner don’t jerk it with all your strength, instead apply a good amount of force (not too much though) on your wrench and let the tensioner slowly retract. Leverage is going to be your best friend so break out the cheater bar if you need to, but be careful don’t apply all your strength at once, slowly apply it. Good luck

That jacking up the engine didn't look right. Imagine the stress you are putting on the transmission by wedging the gear that connects to it. Scotty, this was so sloppy! I watched others on KZfaq and they do it without all the extra jacking up the car, wheel removal, mount removal, jacking up the engine, etc. You still had almost same problems getting stuff out and you didn't even tighten any of the bolts to the torque specifications. Not good!

I find it's easier just to pull the alternator then the tensioner assembly. EASY PEASY ...One bolt holds the tensioner...two bolts hold the alternator.

Exactly. New OEM alternators aren’t cheap, and I’d rather have an old OEM than a new aftermarket. Besides, it’s right there on top and easy to swap later.

You dont need the whole tensioner assembly, just the pulley. Or even just a new bearing $7 on ebay. The bolt is reverse threaded so clockwise to loosen

Same. I had a ‘14 EXL that I traded with 82K miles on it and it was perfect. The AC wasn’t the greatest, but I loved that car. I was extremely regular on the maintenance and avoided all potholes.

Those 5.0 litre explorers are awesome! I had a 1998 and eventually regreted selling it. It had 318000 miles and ran awesome and no major work had been done. No rust and sold it for 2200 bucks 😄

@@TTime685 Well he changed the alternator & that's easy to change & doesn't require loosening the motor mounts. On these Civic's,usually the tensioner & water pump's are changed at the same time since it's accessible.

I have 138k on my 14' Civic ex. Have had to replace a torque mount. Just had a evap emissions issue fixed. Other than those issues, motor is strong and the one thing I was unsure of, the CVT is still buttery smooth. I'd change the transmission fluid earlier than what Honda says. Reason being, you just never know. End of the year I'll trade it for something a little bigger. Maybe a 16' or 17' accord. Been driving a compact last 11 years. Ready to go midsize again.

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer and this vehicle have given me great service over the years and I got it when it was one year old and had low mileage on it (less than 29,000 miles). It has had some minor work done on it and no engine or transmission work at all. The regular work like ball joints and tie rod ends have been replace, and the lubrication of the vehicle changed as required..

Hey Scotty, I see you use an pneumatic impact gun to tighten bolts and wheel nuts. Do you use or recommend using a torque wrench to tighten to specs?

Nah just a normal tool and then stand on it medium pressure with your foot and its good to go Edit: this is for wheel nuts for other bolts obviously take it easy

@@stephenarling1667 Really??? I’ve been a Maintenance Supervisor of heavy machinery and industrial equipment for over 40 years. I have never seen anyone tighten to spec with a pneumatic impact gun. To think you can or to claim you can is irresponsible. They make torque wrenches for a reason. Maybe backyard mechanic wannabes don’t, but career professionals do.

I had two Civics: 1.8 2012 and 2.0 2014. Both presented the same problem which was solved by changing the piece (tensor) showed by Scotty.

Honda isnt so good, i have honda civic 1992 when it says good at US and Europe, it didnt good enough in Tropical asean country, some of their stuff like pulleys, clutch and radiators is not build as good as corolla in same era. After tired repairing many things i sold my civic and never look back again

Definitely truthful about the 98 explorer that V8 will virtually run forever as long as you take care of it as it should. Only issue is rust takes out the trucks before it’s their time if you live in the north or near the ocean. My family has had our 99 mountaineer V8 since it was brand new I just hit 191k miles and it’s still going strong. Only issue is now it’s starting to show its age my dad used it for a bit and it sat outside. Rust is appearing, but major fixes were only needed no later than 4 years ago.

@@golferpro1241 these things truly last, granted the 5.0L is the engine you want the 4.0 with its trans was hit and miss like Scotty said but if you take care of it well it’ll truly go the length. The 4.6 was alright for the SUV but better for the sedans they got put into. Ours was garage kept for the longest until my dad started to use it for work. I’m truly tempted to get some body work done as it isn’t a lot of rust but it’s creeping out to view. Still got a lot of life left good for at least 300-500k miles

i wanted to buy a civic, but this is changing my mind. mustangs are easier to work on, i got a mustang 2008 and never had a problem with it since i got it in 2009, and changing the belt was a 10 minute job because its easy to get in and changing the spark plugs was also easy. but this video shows how hard it is to get in the honda engines, so i might just stay with the mustang, rather pay a little more GT gas money.

I just remove and change the pulley with an Allen key . Not the tensioner . The bearings bad not the tensioner. Make sure you use the old bolt . Not the new one ..a little blue locktite...done ..

BRILLIANT SCOTTY...I was always a shade tree mechanic...did it as a hobby and I loved to help people!!! Now I'm 71...don't move too fast anymore(Snail with arthritus...fast huh??!!!)
