The first generation Focus was a good car. I only ever had 3 problems with them. The alternator is one of the worst things I've ever had to replace in a vehicle. It's buried behind the engine and is a pain to replace. The battery cables, especially on the earlier years were very bad. They would melt and could actually short and possibly catch fire. The automatic transmissions start to have problems at 120k miles usually, however, I have had them go over 200k with no problems. One with a manual will last forever though.

From my experience, what usually kills a 2000-2011 Focus is rust in the rocker panels. Mechanically, they are pretty solid. Pre-2005 they had a timing belt, so you have to keep an eye on that. Otherwise, cheap and cheerful, especially with a manual transmission. And a good wagon is GOLD.

@@ScottyGMusic yeah, Ford sealed up the drain holes in the rockers, right at the factory. are German cars that bad? I mean Japanese ones are known to be reliable, but mostly because of the old, dated stuff they have, while German auto makers always come up with fancy new tech to improve driving experience. I mean why people keep buying German brands if they keep breaking?
@patrickwalton8110
@patrickwalton8110 2 жыл бұрын
@@tuan.hoang_ reasons why people buy German cars 1. performance they handle really nice and have very good acceleration 2. brand name people like prestigious brands 3. most people get rid of their car every after five years before the warranty is up and don’t do regular maintenance so when you buy one used that wasn’t maintained you are in for a bad time and Europeans drive way less each year on average than Americans so they aren’t used as much or abused as much as they are here in the states so unless you work on your own cars do regular maintenance and it has a good service record don’t buy a used German car just get one new and get rid of it before the warranty is up or just lease one

My trick with the 2004 Ford focus that I have is that I use a vacuum pump and suck out the transmission fluid every year or two and replace it. I guess the first time around I replaced the transmission filter too. Replaced the motor mounts which was easy. Replaced the alternator which was a pain and the $100 replacement isn't so great. All in all though I like this car it reminds me of my Mazda protege. Anyway I've had the car for 10 years with no major repairs and it runs fine. Oh I forgot to mention the circuit board in the dash panel had some sort of rust. I took it out and scrubbed it and cleaned it up and it didn't give me any problems after that.

My daily driver is a 2005 FX4 ST with 235,000 miles on it. The alternator went out at about 175,000 miles, the slave cylinder went out at about 210,000. Clutch was still good but having to pull the transmission to change it, I replaced the flywheel and clutch too. Replaced a wheel bearing, electric fans, 1 wheel cylinder and it still runs great!! Good A/C, sunroof, etc. I love my little silver bullet! Wrenching on these cars however takes some special knowledge or you can get in trouble. Took me and my brother hours to get the transmission back in. The subframe prevented an easy reinstall because there is very little clearance and getting it at the precise orientation to line up was a MFer!! I saved about $1,500 as the clutch, slave cylinder, and flywheel, were only $285 but labor charges are insane because it’s FWD. All in all though, it’s been a great little car!

I just sold my old '07 Focus with 245,000K miles on it. The '07 had the L-Engine from Mazda and Ford Auto Transmission. I put a transmission pan drain plug in during the early days and would drain and refill the fluid just like the oil and other fluids. Expensive issues started to pop-up that were more expensive than what the car was worth (emergency cable broke ($400 to replace), front main seal seeped ($800 repair), worn out front sway bar bushings behind subframe ($400 repair), a little rust here and there. Even after 15 years, it still ran and drove pretty darn good, looked pretty good too. I let it go because I wanted something different. I earned it. But I kid you not, that little Focus was 1 heck of a good little car.

I’ll repeat myself. I had a 2002 Ford Focus wagon 4speed automatic And bought used at 100k miles It had a slight shake in park and at stops. After I did spark plugs it stopped and had power like never before..then at 160k I did the alternator and rear struts and drove it to and from NH&CT for 7 years Washed it every once in a while and surprisingly no rust or rot and I lived in the rust belt states.. That car drove til I sold it at 280k miles that car NEVER died or left me stranded! I only had 1 problem When I got it..it would start to overheat but only while idled (thermostat and cooling fan relay) And went away! And that was IT Only reason I sold it was cuz it had 280k and my past experience with fords the auto transmissions never lasted that long! Now it shifted fine but the miles made me nervous.. 2 years after I sold it I saw it driving on the highway in Massachusetts I knew it was my car cuz my custom bumper sticker was still on it Lmao

The wiring was replaced in a Ford Fusion that was a 2014, it turned after numerous attempts at troubleshooting it was not only the wiring but the alternator had been replaced and they actually pair their alternators by computer so you need the original, not just an OEM but the original alternator that comes with the car. If you rebuild that you can go again but if you don't it's a nightmare of little ghost problems in the electrical. Some of the Escapes from then also had the problem.

My daughter's Focus 1st gen was behaving strangly. Electrical problems. Strange lights, radio that would fade in and out. Took it down to local autoparts store and had them run a charging system check. The results showed a weak diode bridge. That alternator was buried on the bottom of the engine facing the firewall. Had to unbolt the engine mounts and remove right tire to get serpentine belt off and tilt the engine in order to drop the alternator. I was not impressed with the build quality. It struck me as a disposable car. Road noise was terrible. Really had to crank the volume.

Hey Scotty, got an interesting one for you. I drove from Boston to Quebec a few weeks ago, and on the way back I filled up in Canada with some kind of premium gas. The check engine light turned on about one hour into the trip and stayed on throughout. When I got to Boston ,the tank was empty, so I filled up with regular 87 octane as I always do, and the check engine light turned off. Was it just the gas octane difference? 2012 Ford Focus manual.

I had an '08 SES. Fantastic running handling no issues except one. By the time I let it go it was on the third transmission. The first at 44k was in warranty. Dealer kept for a long time. Second was about 74k and I ate the cost, the delaer kept it a long time. I sold it with not alot more miles on it. The engine was fine. Just the tranny was the weak point. And it was tough for me on long trips but OK around local.

Scotty I've just finished chemo and purchased a little focus. I've paid too much as is. But now it's been thru 5 mechanics. It's driving it's self. Everything else is fine haha. It's rpms went all wild after a winter freeze jump. Got a new batt. Still screaming. Played with throttle. Have it driving 40 mph on level ground not hitting the gas. Seems to want to stay in 3rd and not drop back down into gear. 109.900 miles.

Yep. It's the L-Engine from Mazda. It's the previous engine to the now Sky-Active engine. Mazda and Ford collaborated back in the 2000's. The L-Engine was put in the Mazda 3 which people bought like crazy. Remember Zoom, Zoom? Mazda didn't rust proof very well and those cars would fall apart. Ford did rust proof their under-carriage and body parts better, so for a savvy buyer, you would buy the Focus and get the Mazda L-Engine with a better rust-proof body and save a few a dollars. With normal maintenance, the Focus was a good little Econo-Car. I still see some on the road, but never seen the Mazda 3 from that time period. I believe it's because the wheels fell off from rust.
