The Toyota Champ is going to be my next utility truck. I'll have to buy the sides to the bed to keep my feed where it belongs, but being able to fold down the sides as well as the tail gate is an awesome feature for a rancher. Being able to forklift a pallet of feed onto the truck from three directions is a great idea.

I have a 2014 SRX4. The 2 wheel version is probably faster but I have accidentally laid a 4 wheel patch. The only thing that has gone wrong is that the sunroof drain clogged and flooded the trunk, shorting the tailgate module and pump. Parking facing downhill worked until it could be fixed. Fixing this car is pretty easy and I'm not a mechanic but I have fixed everything that has gone wrong so far. Thanks Scotty great video.

I know a guy who took a Cadillac SRX to 250,000 miles, it took 3 differentials, 1 set of timing chains, 1 transmission, 2 water pumps, 1 radiator, 2 starters, 1 ignition switch and routine maintenance. Still ran okay but he had removed all unnecessary fuses because of a battery drain.

Scotty, sorry but I need to correct you (rare). The replacement XT5 sells so well that GM has tried to discontinue it since 2021 but can't because there's so much demand, they just extended it to 2025. I think you're thinking of the XT4 which is a smaller vehicle. I'm a 50 year Cadillac owner had great ones and no so great (70's were not so well made) and can tell you my 2020 XT5 is my favorite. Better than any BMW or MBZ I've owned.

I have 2 Buick LaCrosses with the same engine. 200k on one and still going strong. GM recommends a Dexos approved oil (synthetic oil) on these and they are right. I change the oil every 5,000 miles regardless of percentage oil life left with Dexos approved full synthetic and both cars have treated me well without any major issues. I bought a Cadillac XT5 as well with an updated version of this engine. The Buicks have 305hp and the Cadillac has 325hp. All are “zippy” and fun to drive!

I have a 2009 CTS AWD V6, still going at 160k plus. It does have that weird oil consumption issue Scotty described in a previous video. Requires a valve cover gasket replacement my understanding. Still has great power, original engine and transmission. It is kind of small though and not a good vehicle for tall people in my opinion. Wife drives it. One thing I don't like about it, is that it has a lot of blind spots due to large corner posts and due to the sports car design, feels like you are sitting on the ground. So many vans, SUV's, and trucks on the road now, when you park in a parking lot, you can't see over other vehicles to pull out of a parking space safely. Not a bad car over all though. We bought used for $6000 with 100k miles.

I have a 2009 CTS 3.6 DI. I was the only sale at that dealer in that month (this was when GM was going through bankruptcy) The dealer changed my extended warranty from 100K Mi to 75K Mi and I did not pay attention when I purchased the car (in 2009). At 99.7K Mi I got the recall for the timing issue. $7.8 K warranty work. However, the recall only covered the timing, it DID NOT cover the damage the timing issue did to the engine. Nor the fact that the breather tube on the Passenger side was replaced with a sensor causing the oil to coke in that area. Long story short, it cost me an additional $5.6K to rebuild the engine. Valve train, Cams, Bearings, 2 pistons, all of the rings, the works. That shyster Dealer cost me that $5.6K by pulling that switch and me not catching it. I will not ever, ever purchase another GM vehicle, for any reason, due to that experience.

I have essentially the same car, 2010 Equinox with the 3.0V6. The ONLY thing I wish I had done as part of the maintenance was regular (40K) transmission fluid exchanges. I didn't do that and the trans failed at 149K miles. I've used either Mobil 1, Penz Plat, Amsoil for oil and have changed it every 4-7K miles. It just turned 176K miles. I took it to Orlando and back in a day, probably a couple hundred miles at least and was getting around 26mpg.

If you fix a couple defects, they aren't bad engines. As long as you don't kill any computer modules. And as long as you dont mind taking the entire engine apart and making sure to put all new gaskets on everything that needs to be removed like when replacing the starter. I got the intake manifold off (,the starter is under it), then i noticed the valve covers leaking and had to get a special pulley remover for the water pump pulley (which needs to be removed to get the valve cover off), and don't forget you have to take, basically, the entire front end and radiator off, just to replace the alternator. Stuff like that. Lol

I've never seen this show from Scotty, but I wonder: Would a high end scan tool be worth it to help maintain and ward off problems for an iffy old used car? For models with known issues, would routine scanning let you catch and remedy an issue before it became big problem? Or are models with repair issues just going to fall apart because the parts are bad?

@dcsteve7869
@dcsteve7869 4 ай бұрын
Later model GM V6's don't have the same issues with the timing chains as the earlier GM HF V6s. The problem was traced down to consumption of oil through the pcv system due to design flaw in the valve cover gasket and ventilation system. The revised system uses a different gasket with an integrated baffle to prevent as much oil from being ingested and the newer engines use improved hydraulic tensioners. An older engine can be easily retrofitted with the new valve cover gasket. However timing chain stretch and wear could be avoided in ANY of these engines by simply checking your oil level regularly as it was oil starvation that causes the excess heat leading to chain stretch and the damage to the tensioners. FYI the replacement to the SRX is the XT5 and it's actually a little bigger, comparable in size to the Honda Pilot/MDX and they've actually been selling well. Still think they are around $8-12k over priced in my opinion

I'm happy to hear that hopefully GM has upgraded the 3.6L. I've been considering a Cadillac and both the timing chain stretch and cylinder deactivation had me thinking that I'd buy a new one and either dump it before the drivetrain warranty ends or buy the factory extended warranty. For the moment, I'm sticking with my Subaru Legacy.

@@lkjh00on89 right around when they came out of with LFX series engines. In some models this was as early as 2010 but mostly this was resolved by 2012 mid way through the 3rd generation runs. These problems were pretty much remedied by the 4th generations that came out in 2016, but as stated there can be issues in vehicles where oil changes were neglected. for the record I had an ATS-V with the LF4 V6. Fantastic car, it was a monster on the track and felt much more responsive than the M3/M4. I have one of these at 121K miles (2012 MY)- engine is fine, so long as you change the oil regularly- timing chain stretch comes from prolonged oil changes- I was doing them every 5K, now at 4K and no oil consumed between changes. Lifetime tranny fluid? Nope- changed that at 60K and I just drained and filled that at 116K miles. Runs perfectly. The key as usual is proper oil/fluid changes. I recently had the O2 sensors changed (all 4) and it’s FWD- AWD is a pain as the subframe needs to be removed to get to the rear O2 sensors on the cat.

Had it flushed like they mandated and 7000 miles later it returned worst then before. Il n3ver own a gm ever again pure junk. The cue screen would freeze with whatever was on, and I would have to stop restart it to reset it. I'm much happier with my 2018 4 runner after 40 years I Finally learned my lesson

Minor interior things still broke after the babying but it’s not the highest quality auto out there. gas hog but drives smooth as can be. Fingers crossed on the timing chains...

Cars are built to please their first owners. Who cares what people think of them when they're ten years old and worn out? The person who purchased this car new is probably enjoying a factory fresh 2024 and probably has no regret about the price paid. Whining about how they perform when old is wasted noisel

Scotty says to stay away from the 6 cylinder Subaru, only buy the 4 cylinder. I have a 2004 Dodge Caravan, although Scotty isn’t fond of it, it has been trouble free (no fancy electronics like the new stuff out there)! I do the basic maintenance myself, brakes, fluids, plugs. I would tend to go with a Honda 4 cylinder non-turbo after listening to Scotty.
