Marco Femto At one time if you had a family you couldn’t get better it was the perfect family Vehicle but with all the suv now you can get pretty much the same thing and look good while driving them. Yeah at one time for family’s it was king of the road. And am not saying they don’t serve their purpose because they do it all depends on what you want out of it. Maybe in longer trips it would still be a better way to go.

Muzzling the VCM is key to increasing the longevity of this engine. The van is way nicer to drive after installing the VCM tuner. I ran the original and just upgraded to the solid state version. Do your regular transmission maintenance and the transmission should go 250,000 miles. We’re at 150,000. Plan on selling it when it hits 200,000. Going hybrid for our next mini van.

My 2007 Odyssey had 216k when i traded it in. I changed the oil as scheduled, changed the timing belt once, had to replace the power steering rack under warranty and drivers window motor also under warranty. I changed the power steering o rings on the pump myself, costs were under $20, and also the a/c relay, cost was $7. Drove to Florida and back, Texas and back and finally South Dakota and back, never had any issues. I never had the transmission serviced and it shifted just fine when i traded it in. Now that said, i would not buy another one. It did use oil between changes, and for a minivan, it was uncomfortable for long road trips. I drove my mom's Sienna, and would buy it first over the Odyssey.

I'm on my third Odyssey. The 2004 model I drove to 349,500 miles when a head gasket went out. Other than that it never burnt any oil and the transmission had no problems. The second one was a 2006 model that I drove trouble free to 305,000 miles when I thought the transmission went out. But it turned out to be a corroded Steel line between the transmission and the cooler. I replaced it with a rubber hose and the transmission was fine. Now I have a 2011 Odyssey, that went trouble free from 142,000 to 180,000 in one year. I always used Mobil 1 extended, that I changed every 12- to 15,000 miles.

I still like my 2005 Odyssey. The engine and AT are still great, humming among just like when they are new. Still the best vehicle in my family fleet even after 15 years. My in-law had their 2002 Odyssey’s (known AT problem) running to 200k miles before trading them in for another Odyssey and CRV. Do not like Sienna sloppy handling and transmission shifting. It felt unsafe for me in emergency situations. With proper maintenance, I got the rattle trap 1997 GM van running for 21 years before giving it away. My neighbor’s kid is still driving it. Every design has problems. But one needs to take care of the vehicles to make sure they last a long time

Scott, you are damn right about every thing about honda odyssey. i have a 2014 honda odyssey, it engine blew out around 3 years normal drive and was repaired under warranty. From day 1, the engine leaks slowly and ruined 2 alternators already(the alternator got heavy grease all over it and worked over hot ish all the time and it gave up every two year). Last weekend, my husband put the 3rd alternator into it and I am praying this thing last little bit longer before I get enough money to buy another car.

So Scotty, I am so happy you stated that the Sienna crushes the Odyssey for reliability. I was responsible for picking out of a vehicle for someone who only had $6000 cash, which included the money for the taxes etc. She also had a family with children. At first I was leaning towards the Corolla since I knew I had to buy a high mileage vehicles and those last a long time. They had a 2006 Corolla for the same price as the Sienna, but it had rust on the rims and the engine seemed to make a little of a rattle noise. I also used the screwdriver to check the bottom of the vehicles for rust as well. :) Then I decided on the Sienna. Found one, a 2006 Toyota Sienna for $5300 with 155K miles. That dealership also had the Odyssey for the same amount, but I remembered what you said about the Honda Odyssey, so I decided not to even look at the Odyssey and go with the Sienna.

We've had an '08 Pilot since 2010. Bought it with 30,000 miles on it and it's been great. It has almost 200,000 miles on it and other than replacing the alternator and radiator we've just done routine maintenance to it. It still runs and shifts very smoothly. I do change the Transmission fluid every 60,000 miles though so that might be part of it. It was starting to use oil but I replaced the PCV valve at 187,000 miles and now it's not using any oil between changes anymore.

The secret - buy LX version without VCM (no oil consumption) and electronic scrap, flush tranny, replace ATF filter and install additional ATF radiator. Also I replaced timing belt, crank seal, water pomp, radiator (was small leak) and thermostat. Serviced myself, so bought only parts, usually aftermarket but not the cheapest ones. In total ~$1000 in parts. And I love it - so much room, its perfect for long trips. Also you can carry a lot of luggage, plenty of power, smooth ride, perfect vehicle.

I'm with you on the older Honda transmissions, but your wrong on that J-Series engine your looking at. If you keep the oil changed, they're bullet proof. I agree 100 percent. I have a VCM accord j series, use high quality oil keep the oil levels where it should be, the engine will be fine. I'm willing to bet that around 90 percent of the population open their hoods for two reasons: one when they about to go on a long trip or two when it dont start overheating or making loud noises. We can talk about reliability all day but let's be honest people dont look after their vehicles. Yes I know Toyota can take neglect better but some vehicles needs a little more attention. I agree the j series is solid they can go 300 to 400 thousand miles when maintained properly. After around 2005 the transmissions in the honda Acura line up has gotten way better.

I think the original 3rd gen vans, the 05 and 06 could have problems. I kept my oil changed WAY more than the oil life indicator wanted, and my engine suffered VTEC failure at 150,000 miles. It got noisier as it aged. Finally, the van got stuck in cylinder deactivation mode, stuck running on 3 cylinders. The cost to fix it was too much, so I junked the van. Later Odysseys I noticed added a 2nd VTEC solenoid I believe to help with the problem. I did not have transmission issues myself, but I converted it to Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic ATF with Lubegard Red added to it also. The plug/magnet was gnarly the first drain I did to get the Z1 fluid out. I did a couple drain and fills with the Maxlife and the trans loved it. The next time I changed it, it did not have that crap on the magnet. I do know people who's transmissions went out early, but mine held. I credit the Maxlife with that.

@@MrRangerZr1 It would be impossible to tell that the cam was the source without removing the cam and measuring the caps and camshaft itself to verify. At that point you wouldn't put a worn cam back in, you'd need to fix it on the spot. I'd be weary because there are a lot of pulleys and pumps nearby that can resonate noise into the engine on the J series. There have been times when a pulley was making an odd sound and the stethoscope was loudest on the front bank of the engine.

My parents used to have a 2004 Honda Odyssey from 2004 to 2018. And I drive it form 2015 to 2018. In 2015, they traded it in for a used 2015 Toyota Camry. That van didn’t have any major issues, as it aged it had some minor electrical problems, the steering wheel audio controls stopped working, the back vent windows didn’t open anymore, and the driver’s side sliding door like don’t work, also because of its age, the track for the doors need some lubrication, but that’s was when it was 14 years old and had nearly 120,000 miles on it. I don’t recall our minivan had any transmission or engine issues. I still see a ton of older Odysseys still on the road. I actually didn’t mind driving it, I kinda liked it. The used 2015 Camry I drive has more features, and I like that car too. Both the 2004 Honda Odyssey being handed down to me and the 2015 Toyota Camry that I drive are not perfect, technically Borge were used when I started driving them but they weren’t terrible either, I like both vehicles. Also if I remember correctly, the Toyota dealership sold that van like a week after they bought that used 2015 Camry.

Well, that's answered a question! I'm planning a cross-country trip taking a few months and was deciding between a Sienna and an Odyssey. So, Sienna it is..

Not to mention how many alternators I see go out and where they positioned makes it a pain to get too.

Dixie Normous don’t worry it’s tough. Takes about two hours. You have to pull the radiator fan. Mine went out right at 100k. And you have to buy the Honda one for 500 the aftermarket ones don’t hold up. Ask me how I know.

13 years ago, my family invested in a 6 year-old Mazda MPV LX that was ACTUALLY made in Japan for $5,000. It has worn struts, and we had to replace the starter/alternator, but it's all due to normal wear. However, it has never had problems with the transmission or the engine. I drive it now, and I absolutely love it! It has great handling, great gas mileage, lots of space, and it just doesn't know when to quit! Best $5,000 ever spent!😁

Worked at a Nissan dealer when they came out with the van. Nissan ended up giving the customer the option to buy them all back, then they scrapped them. All us techs had first shot at the tires, radio, whatever we could get off them, as long as they could drive them on to the car hauler to send em to the scrap yard.

Bought a used '08 EXL Ody in 2014 because we thought the Hondas were reliable after our '96 Villager (a great little van) died. Recently read about oil consumption due to the VCM. Plan to muzzle it soon. Not happy to hear about Scotty's verdict but so far it has run very well.

I'm a mechanic for major ambulance company out of Ohio, all the wheelchair vans (47) are sienna's. They are truly bulletproof. Most of the work I do is on the ambulances (sprinters). The company uses Amsoil for the fleet. I rarely see them.

Scotty, I like your channel and your videos are usually very good and what you say about car Manufacturers is generally true.... BUT YOU HAVE TO BE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT THE YEAR OF THE HONDA ODYSSEYS' you are talking about!... There were only a few years that were defective.. NOT ALL MODEL YEARS of the older Honda Odyssey Vans were bad. They resolved problems (in later years) ... I wish you would be more specific instead of generalizing so much.

@@jgfergus my van is not a fiat Chrysler rather a Daimler/Chrysler. I agree with you on certain models but the Caravan is a good van and to date the Chrysler pacifica's the number one rated van currently and has been since it came out. Reliability is subjective. Keep that in mind.
