In what will certainly be remembered as a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has overruled a 40-year-old precedent that gave federal agencies, rather than judges, the power to interpret ambiguous laws passed by Congress. Administrative experts say the decision will dramatically change the way key health agencies do business. Also, the court decided not to decide whether a federal law requiring hospitals to provide emergency care overrides Idaho’s near-total ban on abortion.
Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Victoria Knight of Axios, and Joanne Kenen of Johns Hopkins University and Politico Magazine join KFF Health News chief Washington correspondent Julie Rovner to discuss these stories and more. Plus, for “extra credit,” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week they think you should read, too.
Julie Rovner: The Washington Post’s “Masks Are Going From Mandated to Criminalized in Some States,” by Fenit Nirappil.
Victoria Knight: The New York Times’ “The Opaque Industry Secretly Inflating Prices for Prescription Drugs,” by Rebecca Robbins and Reed Abelson.
Joanne Kenen: The Washington Post’s “Social Security To Drop Obsolete Jobs Used To Deny Disability Benefits,” by Lisa Rein.
Alice Miranda Ollstein: Politico’s “Opioid Deaths Rose 50 Percent During the Pandemic. in These Places, They Fell,” by Ruth Reader.

The burden on legislative committees will be increased tremendously, but an emphasis on expertise, rather than incumbency, might be welcome.

@backcountyrpilot Actually, they assigned to their unelected and ignorant selves, other ignorant judges and a dysfunctional and coin operated Congress, the jobs of thousands of experts in their fields. This will have catastrophic consequences that they, in their hubris, never even considered, or perhaps don't care about. Congrats. We've just moved one step closer to the Idiocracy the right has always wanted.

Unless Texas has figured out how to unilaterally amend the US Constitution, no court has the authority to allow the Texas law to override the supreme law of the land! ARTICLE 6. Supremacy of the National Government SECTION 1. VALID DEBTS All debts contracted and engagements entered into, before the adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation. SECTION 2. SUPREME LAW This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding. SECTION 3. LOYALTY TO CONSTITUTION The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Note: Most people only need information to make their own decisions. Forget making laws to rule us. We are a free people. A woman who doesn't want a child should do something before needing an abortion. That is a person she is carrying and should have the same rights as any other person in this world.

So now we have the Conservative billionaires to makes decisions on environment, energy, and worker's rights? They say it's going to be congress and the supreme court doing it but, let's be real, congress are bought by corporations and at least half the supreme court are being bought off by conservative billionaires. This is the thing that OFFICIALLY turns the US into an oligarchy. Rules and common sense are about to be dictated by people with money and not by actual common sense.

Yeah, now it is only nine people with dictatorial law making power, and no knowledge or training that are regulating your medicine, your food, your guns, your water, your electrical wiring, nuclear power plants, aircraft maintenance, your medical care, your dental care, the construction of your house, air traffic, bridge construction, fisheries, hunting, water management, tractor trailer rigs, dams, etc. Which injustice will you trust to pilot the next flight you take, or perform the brain surgery you need, or issue the permit when someone wants to put a landfill in your neighborhood? Will you get real medicine or snake oil?

Kurt -- Please list at least five (5) of these "many" experts who are motivated by power and $, giving us their names, and which departments they work for. And then also tell us exactly what each of them did that was corrupt and based on personal gain rather than science. * Bonus points if the list doesn't contain anybody whose last name begins with "F" who specializes in infectious disease. Please list five OTHER people, across at least three different agencies. Because if there are "too many" corrupt experts, it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to generate the list of names and departments. Thanks!

Too many people were hurt during the Pandemic because all the "Health Agencies" were giving conflicting information about protocol. People got tired of the constant "come here and do this, go there and do that" attitude. When you're being told multiple conflicting messages, you get tired of it real quick. So yeah those agencies are not cohesive in their messaging and if they can't get it together then why have them?

Health Agencies? Depleted National Stockpile three years into the presidency. No pandemic response plan. Medical guidance provided by politicians who had absolutely no medical knowledge or training. One of these politicians suggested, on national television, to shine bright lights inside the body and inject bleach. And a mass campaign on social media to spread misinformation! Which "agencies" provided conflicting information!
