This time of year we’re able to get out and take a look at our fields right as the crops are emerging. From here, we can already tell if there are going to be factors that will limit our yields at the end of the year.
We look for uniform emergence, check plant populations, depth, weed pressure, and drowned out spots. We even get into planter offsets and row shutoffs to make sure the planter was doing its job correctly and make adjustments if we still can.
This early season scouting helps us determine what the potential of our crop is. We check our fields often throughout the season and make input decisions along the way. It’s one of my favorite things to do as a family.
What’s your fav thing to do as a family this time of year? On or off the farm?
