The main reason that the soda popper gets overlooked is because they see a bar and conclude that it’s a gimmick weapon. It’s the king of burst damage, and I often ignore the bar entirely-due to how quickly I get myself killed-and it still dominates.

The underlying reason behind most of those criticisms is pretty subtle: the stock Scattergun better encourages the in-and-out gameplay that Scout does best. An inexperienced Scout with the Scattergun can whiff 6 shots and know to leave. An inexperienced Scout with the Soda Popper whiffs 6 shots and keeps fighting, because it just reloads so fast, so they overcommit and die. On average, players do better with the Scattergun, but it isn't because the Soda Popper is a worse gun: it just has a subtly higher skill floor (even ignoring the Hype mechanic) based purely on knowing when you should leave a fight.
@ComparativelyRegular
@ComparativelyRegular 4 ай бұрын
Yeah that's what I thought too. Basically, the stock Scattergun is easier to use while still being just as good as the Soda Popper, which makes it more forgiving for the less experienced players even though it's technically not the strongest Scout primary weapon for those who are more experienced.
@typicalgentleman

I see a lot of people saying that the soda popper is a worse force-a-nature because it has no knockback, but in my opinion, it's better for that reason. You can't get the most damage out of the FaN in the majority cases because the knockback causes damage falloff and bullet spread, when the soda popper doesn't have that problem.

Its mostly based on your playstyle, if you are mostly airborne jumping around an enemies head like an annoying fly, then the soda popper would be better to use, BUT, if you play grounded and take "IM RUNNIN' CIRCLES AROUND YA" to heart, then the force of nature would be better because the knockback would A) give you more vertical movement so you can reach higher points to ambush from and B) the knockback makes enemies an easy target to double tap since they move in a straight direction. You would only need to position yourself a little better so you knock enemies into walls/cliffs, which isnt a big price to pay for free doubletaps and enviormental kills

I think another point about the soda-popper that was sort of covered but not fully, maybe because it is implied or known, is the huge difference between air movement from other forms of movement. Unlike rocket, sticky, or sentry jumping, the double jumps allows the ability instantly change direction mid-air multiple times. With the regular double jump already being annoying to deal with, there is a chance it can be predicted correctly. Having to predict 5 times in all the directions scout can jump towards is, in my opinion, truly completely unpredictable.

Not even minding the jump boost, what makes the Soda Popper so good is the fact that it's functionally the same as the Scattergun if you play perfect. What the Soda Popper doesn't have in its clipsize, it makes up for in the firing rate and reload speed. By the time a Scout has shot his third Scattergun shot, the Soda Popper has likely already reloaded and is ready to fire the third and fourth shot. Now as for why the Scattergun is just funnier to use to most? It's less stressful. The Soda Popper is extremely powerful but requires a near constant lock-on on your target thanks to how quickly you fire. Imagine Sniper's Rifle versus his SMG, that kind of stress.

Holy mother of god people who know how to use the soda popper. You have no idea how many people wait the exact firing interval of a stock scattergun to shoot people every time. Why is the 50% faster firing speed even there if you're just going to ignore it? Every time they unban this thing in a competitive league they regret it, and that's because it's the best.

If the Soda Popper DIDN'T have a hype bar, people would complain that it's a strictly better scattergun. Because for what scout wants to do, burst damage on literally any class that isn't exactly heavy or an overhealed soldier, it's just better. But because it does, and because it's easy for people new to scout to get lost in the sauce with all the jumps, the clearly superior weapon is seen as a gimmicky sidegrade at best.

the soda popper hype baiting giant soldier rockets is useful because in non-two cities tours its pretty common for there to be no soldiers or medics due to them costing too much in comparison to Heavy and Sniper who are both very cheap high dps classes. The scout generally is the most important class in Gear Grinder because he distributes a ton of the health with mad milk + refill canteens (more than even a medic or conch could), and can also effectively disable projectile-based giants by holding their Agro thanks to the soda popper jumps, allowing the 3 heavies and sniper to easily shoot them down especially in combination with the fan of wars mark. This is also pretty useful in Steel Trap and Mecha Engine since they tend to have a lot of dumb projectile giants but those tours are a joke and you can win by doing basically anything

as a 150+ hour soda popper scout main, i can confidently say that the soda popper was and is underrated. If you want a newer perspective from someone who started playing tf2 in 2022. I fell in love with the soda popper when it first dropped into my inventory and that's why i main scout. Funnily enough, i use the soda popper for its burst damage more then its hype meter shenanigans. In fact, i rarely use it because the other upsides are just very good imo, and the hype (for me) is just a nice bonus. Killing people in swift 2 shots or even 4 if you missed the first 2 is simply incredible and supports my main loadout of clever + soda popper with a random melee that doesn't suck. I could actually manage at times kill scouts that are better then me who are using stock. As someone who only plays casual, it's just perfect as it is, not overpowered and not worst then the stock scattergun. I do understand that it doesn't comply with many play styles and that's ok, but it doesn't derivate from scout's role (but enhances it like you said) nor feel gimmiky to use. You get what you are going to expect and arguably; the soda popper is the definition of a side grade. I give my appreciations to my favorite item in tf2. And also that jazzy guy gets it :) And yeah, sadly warpaints suck on the soda popper but i got an unusual one so that's a W.

The Soda Popper has always been my favorite Scout primary. It'd be good even without the Hype meter but the addition of noclip tips it into insane territory. Also I feel personally called out by the "Reading stats" section lol. I mainly do it because it sets a good baseline for the weapon discussion but it goes without saying that probably every person watching TF2 videos knows what each weapon does. Either way, great video! Keep up the good work.

the regular ol force of nature absolutely shreds too, when you get good with it it's knockback basically becomes a really jarring airblast that both throws off enemies and can pin them in place making the follow up shot easy to line up. Heck, even if you miss half the time the knockback happening to you throws enemies aim up a lot too, and the extra jump you can do gets way more height way quicker than regular double jumps, without needing to wait for a meter (and again can be used as an absurdly good movement mixup). You kind of end up dancing around inbetween shots being untouchable

both the stock and soda popper have their own pros and cons. the stock is consistent because of its extra amount of ammo and damage, but lacks in the burst damage the soda popper has. the soda popper in the other hand is a high risk, high reward weapon that requires you to have good aim in order to reap the benefits of its burst damage. the multi-jump to me is more of an extra reward for your good aim but not the main reason why the soda popper is good. overall, it really depends on if you prefer low risk consistent damage, or high risk burst damage with a side of extra mobility.
@krypt1ccc739
@krypt1ccc739 Ай бұрын
I enjoy using it with the crit-o-cola because it has some synergies. Firstly the soda popper is all about burst damage so amplifying that makes some sense, it deletes anything but a heavy, it can deal up to 140 damage per shot so 280 which is just short of killing a full health heavy :( its still pretty good though. Secondly, the severity of the crit-o-cola's weaknesses are reduced when using the soda popper, being able to shoot 50% faster means that you give your opponent less time to react; With stock you might shoot your first shot then the soldier turns around and mini-crits you before you get the second shot in but the soda popper's faster firing speed might've ended the engagement in time. Then ofc you can't ignore the hype mechanic that can let you dance in the air, avoiding projectiles which is obviously even more useful when you're marked for death. There are some scenarios where the first 6 shots of sustained fire from the stock would be better but I think the synergy is pretty good and most importantly, it's fun!

Soda Popper, it's like the force a nature, but with NO KNOCKBACK, so it's like, a little worse. but It makes up for it, with it's awesome jump ability. Imagine Scout, with 5 double jumps. That's how many jumps soda popper hype scout has. Can you IMAGINE? Those COOL FRAG AIRSHOTS are NAUGHT with the ULTIMATE POWER of your 5 JUMPS. Too bad you have to DEAL DAMAGE to get that HYPE POWER up. Running around and dealing damage with that pathetic little gun with no knockback is like trying to catch a stray cat- EVERYTHING KEEPS RUNNING AWAY! How are you supposed to kill everything in sight to get that SWEET SWEET purple glow if everything sees you and TURNS TAIL?! I suggest the following improvement to make Soda Popper gameplay more entertaining: "Everything stands still, so I can shoot at it." The game is easier that way. To any of you QUACKS who suggest I dare use SCOUT'S MOVEMENT to get myself CLOSER to the ENEMY, I daresay that they could DAMAGE ME IN RETURN, KILLING ME, and ENDING MY QUEST FOR SWEET SWEET PURPLE. The best way for entertainment is if EVERYONE ELSE IN THE SERVER SUDDENLY GOES AFK- PERHAPS FROM THE RAPTURE, WHERE MY SINFUL, CHARRED HIDE WILL REMAIN TO SODA POP TO MY WILDEST WISHES.

No knockback makes it better for damage tho? Since you want to be close to people in order to maximize damage. Knockback on the FaN is bad for damage, good for movement, but with the soda popper you get better movement anyways.
@feminine_desires
@feminine_desires 4 ай бұрын
Knockback is actually the entire reason why the FaN is the worst primary for scout. It fucks with your movement and fucks with the enemy's movement. This means that you are constantly thrown off kilter everytime you try to shoot and remember, as a scout you want to be airborne while you are shooting your target to dodge. So every shot you take with the FaN knocks you out of your air strafe and makes you incredibly predictable to airshot. You are no longer moving with confidence, which is the most important aspect of scout. Further, because the target gets knockbacked, you are effectively giving them a free escape tool. One of scout's most important roles in comp is the ability to chase and giving enemies a boost in retreating is always bad. Oh let's not forget that the second shot might as well as have a 50% damage penalty because of damage fall off reducing your damage to that target that you just knocked away. What this means is that the Soda Popper is the FaN with none of the downsides and even more upsides.

If you want to really wreck a tank in MvM with a soda popper, if you have a medic willing to kritz you, max out your soda popper's damage, and clip, and buy reload canteens. When you unload 6 shots, you can use the canteen while critted to immediately get 6 more. You'll not be able to reuse the canteen right away, so reload, unload another 6 into the tank, reload again, and then use the canteen after you unload another fill clip, and keep repeating until dead tank. If you don't have a medic, your own krit canteens will be helpful. There are better ways to do it, but that's one of the best with scout. Especially if you enable the firing speed ghost upgrade with the upgrade station bug.

I personally prefere the FaN to the soda popper, and yes I know that technically, pushing people away from you means less damage, and that scouts that use it tend to come too close to their target. But the reason why I prefere the FaN over it is that : A) The force jump is really useful. Not that the popper's jumps are bad, but they can't be pulled all the time. On this side, I view each as a personnal preference. Oh and, casuals already suck at shooting a scout that jumps over them, the force jump, if done in between double jumps lets you change directions a lot. B) Pushing people away is sometimes what you want to do, you can force a pseudo 1v1 scenario on someone by getting the target or helper away from the teammates. Or even lets you escape at times. People in your way? Yeet them away! C) You can also just push enemies into props and walls, making them sitting ducks for your second shot that will then still deal good damage since they are still close to you.

I think Bad Weapon Rehabilitation is the best rework of the soda popper, you can use 20% of the hype meter at any time instead of being like a banner charge and more like the BFB. But it lost the reload speed boost, and its main penalty is *removing* the passive double jump on Scout. This still gives it the niche of boosting scout's mobility and having a strong burst damage niche, but at the same time its movement is less consistent like the BFB.

In terms of consistency, the soda popper is actually consistent. Think of it less as "oh you have to reload every second" and instead as "oh, a two-shot burst with a 1 second fire rate." You never truly need to reload because the reload is so fast, it is practically just a fire rate in disguise. Now, with that said, only shooting twice every second may feel slow when people are constantly attacking you. This is when your mobility comes in. While inbetween shots, you can focus on strafing, shoot again, come up with a gameplan, shoot again, spot the medic in an awkward spot, use hype and take them down. Theres more examples but I need to spend less time typing long comments :d Just please explain "why" more directly, instead of saying they are wrong.

tbh, i think soda popper is the most forgiving scout primary (excluding shortstop. it doesnt exist, 'kay?). while if you miss 6 shots (or spent them on other dudes, and get into another fight without time to reload) with stock it really drops off in terms of DPS, but with soda popper miss fucking 20 shots and you still have the same dps as with first 4 and the additional movement of hype gives that absurd levels of survivability to further give scout room for error

@feminine_desires
@feminine_desires 4 ай бұрын
So after getting B4nny's feedback on the item and playing with it myself the one big drawback this has which makes it significantly worse than stock is this: Sustain. It only having 2 shots means you cannot stay in fights, and you especially cannot stay in close with fights. You are forced to only ever chip shot from a distance because if you try and get in close the most you can do is slightly more than 200 damage before the enemy will turn around and gib you because you cannot close out that kill. And you are never going to be able to deal that max 200 damage. The scattergun's third shot is frequently what kills just as the enemy is turning around and taking their one shot at you and if it isn't notice how it IS faster at all six shots than the Soda Popper. This means that you are better at fighting targets that have more than 200 hp. Which is most targets because of overheal and because you do not have perfect aim. In fact the Soda Popper's only two shots means you can't flank with it to reliably get kills on a target that aren't damaged like you can on with stock. Because of the needing to keep your distance you are going to struggle to close out kills, especially on targets that really require you to get close, Demo and Heavy. An interesting drawback of the Soda Popper is that you become weaker to a lot of classes and only stronger against one class. Your strength will be against Soldiers that aren't suddenly in your face or suddenly on your med because someone on your team didn't call their positioning, as Soldiers these days don't run shotgun so they can't contest you while you are jumping about. But anything with a hitscan you are weaker to because they are going to have greater sustain than you do and you jumping about is no different from a soldier bombing at the higher skill levels. Heavies in particular are going to be better because they are going to have a larger window to kill you and you are no longer at your best directly in their face where you want to be against a heavy. A similar situation arises with demo in that they are given a much larger opportunity to counter you because you simply aren't as strong in their face as a stock scattergun, and you are more inclined to play at a distance where they have the advantage. And sure yes Hype does make you better against demos but seriously, the amount of times that is *actually* going to come up at the right times when you need to take advantage of the situations that your bombing soldiers provided, particularly at the mid fight the most important fight in the game, just means that you are constantly playing at a disadvantage against them. No change against pyros or engineers. One thing to keep in mind is that the faster firing speed *rarely* matters. As a scout you need to make your shots count and one of the most important advices any scout main gives is to slow down and time your shots. This effectively means that a faster firing speed might as well as not exist on scout because he needs to make sure he's aiming properly, which takes time. Even if it is short it's going to be longer than the amount of time allotted to you to fire the next shot. And this doesn't just apply to the Soda Popper. Force a Nature and Shortstop both have this issue as well. Sure it means you can output faster DPS than the Scattergun eventually, but if dps was a calculator of how strong a class/item was, then why isn't every 6s team running 2 snipers and 2 direct hit soldiers? An interesting tidbit: You reloading your full 2 shots on the Soda Popper takes about the same amount of time as reloading two shots on stock. So the downtime from an unloaded scattergun with an unloaded Soda Popper if you were to reload two shots is about the same. But guess what, Stock lets you *choose* to fire that one shot instead, so it's reload speed is effectively a lot faster than the Soda Popper as you are given the opportunity to have damage now than later. And that brings me to the second drawback that I discovered that B4nny didn't as he didn't spend as much time with it as I did. Opportunity. One of the biggest differences a clip of 2 versus a clip of 6 means is that you do not have the capacity to capitalize on opportunities or situations that demand your attention *NOW*. The stock scatter gun lets you choose at any given moment to fire a shot or to reload a shot. You can reload at any point in the clip at your leisure and, this is the biggest point, you can choose to cancel your reload to fire a shot. You can't do this on the Soda Popper, because you only have two shots. If your medic suddenly calls "soldier on me" you have a split second to react to one shot that soldier and save your medic. With the Scattergun you can actively prepare yourself for this by shooting 4 shots and reloading them while keeping 2 in the reserve, but you cannot do this with the Soda Popper. If that soldier just happens to appear when you are reloading, woops there goes your medic. One final point: Bans in 6s aren't made because they are over powered. They are made because the people making the banning decisions have never been the ones actually playing competitive. They are made because current existing admins are too scared about the vitriol they'll get from ef2tl and reddit forums. They are made because people who were at one point in invite but don't play competitive anymore are too vocally active in their conservative mindset about the game. They are made because people just want to keep the status quo from a ban list made nearly 10 years ago when people weren't experienced with the game and can't be bothered to learn a game that requires them to adapt to multiple situations. Even when we have so much data pointing to all these banned items sucking from no restriction 6s, they still don't get banned. Because people don't want to play against them. One thing you'll notice in 6s is that if people try and legitimately try and deviate from the status quo, no one will want to play them. Teams that ran a full time engie will never scrim them (Uncle Dane had reported that is what he experienced). Teams that ran a full time heavy and pyro also never get scrims. People in 6s want to play one type of game. And that's 2 stock scouts, 2 stock soldiers with gunboats, medic with crossbow and stock demo. Anything else that might deviate from this too much they'll bring up their pitchforks to ban or refuse to play against. Bans in 6s competitive have no meaning and bear no weight about the strength of the weapon. They are a sign of the conservative streak of players in the history of invite.

They banned it because it made it much harder for soldier and demo to kill the scout. Doubting the viability of a weapon that is banned for a gameplay balance reason is unfair. If people don't practice with the weapon, how can they compare these weapons fairly? Your argument is basically "bad because: not stock". Bans having little to do with weapon power is just wrong with weapons like the diamondback, machina, mad milk, rescue ranger, etc.

@@adriangutierrez441 Why don't you take that comment straight to B4nny, the person who's won far more invite grandchampionships than anyone else in the world. There is no one who's fingerprint is more in the scene than B4nny's and a lot of this information, especially the how bans are actually decided on and maintained in RGL, and historically in ESEA which is important to note as the RGL banlist for traditional 6s was inherited from ESEA, comes straight from him. If you really want to make an argument against this I suggest you prove your worth by at the very least, being just as engaged with the competitive scene as the literal greatest player in the world. You can watch his streams and get a sense of what the competitive scene is like and ask him questions if you are unsure, when he's not in a match or scrimming or having a match that is. At the present moment however he is doing a large move so expect to have to wait a few months before being able to ask him on stream.

@@feminine_desires If b4nny thinks the gun is bad, and he apparently has so much influence. Then why is it still banned? Your argument has little substance. The weapon is banned along with a bunch of other weapons that would influence the way the game is played.
@feminine_desires
@feminine_desires 3 ай бұрын
@@adriangutierrez441 It's still banned for the I mentioned in my initial post. And at the present moment one can even make the argument that the RGL admins are too scared to make the proper changes that are necessary. We know in no restrictions at the invite level that this weapon isn't good as it simply doesn't have the sustain to keep up with the pace of the game, but this decision is on the RGL admins, and have been for a while. Invite players advocating for change have largely been ignored for many years. And if you seriously doubt the validity of the literal greatest player in the world, who's influence and communication with Valve has shaped a lot of the balance changes around weapons we've had in the past, then I can't help you. It's up to you to do the research on your own to get a better understanding of how the competitive scene actually works. Ask long time invite players past and present like Habib, Arekk, Slemnish, Paddie, B4nny; to be able to get a sense of how comp works at this level. Talk with the rgl admins about their decision making and why things are unbanned. Ask them why things haven't changed even after we have so much evidence in no-restriction 6s. Hell I was actively listening in to the live streams of the RGL admins and invite players debating on the ban list changes back during the early days when RGL was still sending data from their no restriction 6s tournaments about what items should be changed to get them unbanned in comp. After valve rebalanced a lot of these items, NONE of those items got unbanned to even be considered for testing in traditional 6s. The fucking BASE JUMPER is still banned for crying out loud.

It makes sense why people dont use it much. The main reason is that most scout players arent that good to the point when they hit their shots most of the time. Scattergun is just more forgiving, and that just make people lean more to stock since its "safer". Now, if you have a top level scout player and equipped him with the soda popper, he would do better than woth stock. The stats make the soda popper statistically better than stock, and thats a fact. And the main argument i see is "consistency", which I think most people by it is that stock is more forgiving. Bost weapons are as consistent as their users, so consistency isnt a valod argument whatsoever. I mainly use stock, since im just not at the level of where i can hit most of my shots, but if i was, i would use the soda popper most of the time.

You say that it’s the best people are just bad at aiming, but wouldn’t that technically make a weapon like the loose cannon on demoman his best primary? Since you’d consistently be doing 130 damage?

The Soda Popper is to the Scattergun what The Widowmaker and Dragon's Fury are to the Stock Shotgun and Flamethrower respectively, objectively better weapons combat wise with virtually infinite uptime, but you gotta hit your shots for it to matter, a big difference tho is that unlike those two examples, the popper doesn't negatively mess with any of the mechanics of the class, it instead ENHANCES them, so the only real "tradeoff" is a slightly more bursty and unwieldy combat structure, that gets neutered as soon as the user becomes competent with it, that's how ridiculous this weapon is (it's also fun as hell).

The soda popper would still be competitive with the scattergun if it had no passives at all. Its fast damage and fast sustain, those alone make it incredible. I think the main reason people don't fall in love with the weapon is because the time between scattegun shots is so ingrained into muscle memory that firing faster just feels incorrect and screws with your ability to aim sequential shots since its so easy to tape down M1, whiff, and be caught reloading. For similar reasons I believe the shortstop also gets neglected. Both it and the first version of baby face's blaster let scout be more exceptional at midrange harass but people tried to use them as if they were the scattergun (and still do) like sure you get damage rampup if you go in but they forget that a midrange scout can just pester people forever without getting hit too hard. Meanwhile the soda popper is directly comparable to stock in where you are meant to be engaging people, but with plain better burst potential and a dedicated middle finger button for projectiles and single shot weapons like a competent scout had a hard time with them in the first place

I think part of the issue might be the preconceived notion that its only good up close, with people focusing on the close up meatshots. While those are always excellent, dont get me wrong, the reload speed probably makes this gun workable/great at ranges where youd only get 30/40 damage. Which is the scatterguns real upside from the 4 clip guns, since its both good at high damage meatshots and lower damage shots at a distance.

I was gonna compare burst damage and say i think the soda popper has an edge, since TF2 is more about burst damage (if your not named heavy). Something i think people have overlooked is that the soda popper reloads its shots all at once, which the scatter gun does not. Obviously there is the trade off of the smaller clip, but i would presume the scatter gun has way more downtime and a lack to burst damage as effectively. That being said, as someome who can't aim, 6 shots is nice to have :3
