Around here the corn is cut anywhere from a couple weeks before to a week after bow season opens. When it's fresh cut, it can be a gold mine in the right spot, but of course the whole dynamics of the area changes without that wall of standing corn.

Ok, I have something about corn fields that appears to be more and more likely to be happening, and you all touched on it.. not only are the deer less like to bed in the corn now due to the spacing of the rows and each stalk, they have lost any type of ground cover that serves as bedding, such as grass, weeds etc that used to grow between the stalks. Now with all of the spraying that happens there is nothing left but the corn. You used to be able to do spot and stalks in corn fields...that is not possible anymore due the rows being too tight and the deer just aren't laid up in the corn anymore. I own a small farm and lease some of the land for AG, specifically corn and soy bean so I have seen this first-hand. Which brings up another topic... Spraying the crops and food plots... What is sprayed on the crops and plots are eaten by the deer, that deer ends up on your dinner table...what are you eating? Not to pull out the picket signs because I am guilty also...just something to think about. I also believe that the sprays are starting to effect the deer physiologically due to changes in behavior of the deer, vulnerability to disease, rut patterns....all of it seems to be all over the place. I would be interested in any of your thoughts.

Awesome! Thank you for such a quick setup after the request for scouting standing corn. I didn't realize the deer were more likely to bed in the small islands than they were in the corn. That was one nugget I took away. At the end of the video, you guys said that you expected the deer to bed under that one tree and spoke about another patch of trees having a possible stand tree. Why would the deer bed in that one area under the tree but not in the 2nd area where you thought about putting a stand? That area looked like it had water to one side meaning deer would not have to worry about approach from that side. Love what you guys are doing. Hunting the midwest is so much more fun than the southeast! Oh, one thing to keep in mind if you go to Alabama to hunt this year.... if you bump a buck out of his bed in the deep woods, you won't see him in that area again for a very long time.

Once the corn is down, how long do they hit the fields for leftovers after they cut it, and do you think they would feed during the day on this or more likely night due to the lack of cover? We all enjoy what you all do, please keep this up!
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 6 жыл бұрын
It really depends. With farm equipment as good as it is nowadays they don't leave nearly as much waste grain out on the field. Also depends on the deer density (more deer likely= less time it will take them to clean up a field). As far as them using it during daylight that will most likely depend on the amount of pressure that area gets. We aren't counting on hunting over the field after it is harvested, we will probably move into the river bottom more then.

Are you scouting for the season or just kind of taking inventory. Do you find they do different movement as soon as season starts?
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 6 жыл бұрын
We are scouting to make a plan to hunt the deer in this area while the corn is still standing. If the corn is still standing by the opener we will hunt them in the areas where there is the highest concentration of deer. They will make some small movement changes as food sources change but they will likely be bedding in the same areas. Corn is great cover for deer.

question: I was looking at an Iowa farm yesterday. It had a draw running through it with fingers coming out. The fingers didn't have trees in them. There was CRP all around the draw and a three ponds. Deer were everywhere. But without trees in the fingers, the deer were bedded in the CRP. There was agg around most of the CRP. Deer were bedded on both sides of the draw in the CRP, regardless of the wind direction. That made it difficult to know where they would be. How would you guys approach such a place? It seems like no matter how I hunt it, I may risk jumping the deer on the way in.
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 6 жыл бұрын
Might be able to observe them from a distance and try to move in from there. Ground attack might be a good option. Or setup at a distance with a decoy. We see big bucks bed in tall CRP grass all the time. You might be able to sneak closer than you think while they are bedded in that grass, especially if it's fairly flat. While their bedded it could be tough for them to see you.

I have a new, similar spot in Ohio as the one you talked about with corn on one side, thin strip of hardwoods, and then a tall meadow on the other. I’m not sure if it is a morning or evening spot, because I’m not sure which section the deer are mostly bedding in. Beds appear to be in all three. Would you hunt that fence opening spot in the morning or evening? Access through the corn, hardwood or meadow? Thanks for the info. Cool dog.

Is it just me, or is the hunting community transitioning from the hunting blind in a huge food plot type hunting to targeting buck bedding, setting up with favorable winds and thermals leaving the scent kill spray on the shelf at Wal-Mart? I don't know guys but it sure seems like it.

I do the buck bedding, favorable winds and thermals but still use the scent spray to be safe, most winds swirl and change to much to predict. Food plots are pretty pointless where I hunt due to all the corn and soy beans.

we actually seem to spook LESS deer with the headlamps. They help us be more quiet in the woods and often the deer aren't alarmed by them.

Usually the corn comes out between mid October to mid November, depending on when it was planted and the weather conditions in the fall. Some locations it's nice having the corn left for pre-rut, other spots you'd prefer it picked as quickly as possible to get the deer moving into the timber.

I really think Florida is desperate for real woods/swamp scouting vids. From Central Flo South there's not a Ag. Angle to exploit. You have got to do real tru Indian scouting of sum nasty gritty woods and cypress domes a lot of planted pines and Palmetto Flats. Gotta know hog trails and tracks from deer. It's a whole lot of challenges that I just think the hunting film market is leaving untapped. And Florida is probably one of the most hunter friendly places to come go wild and have a blast we make it easy and cheap. C'mon THP hit the Green Swamp slay sum pigs or goats in January heck if nothin else come bust sum Turkeys come spring. I'll personally show ya around.

Would you be using a ground blind to set up on the non-tree side of the corn if there isnt a good tree to hang in? Great stuff keep it up.
@TheHuntingPublic
@TheHuntingPublic 6 жыл бұрын
We would not be using a ground blind. That would likely be too much intrusion. We will just use the cover of corn and tall grass to stay hidden from the deer. If bucks start seeing a ground blind they are just going to stop using that area.

We are against them on public land. On private land a bale blind that was put out early in the summer could work really well. But not worth the risk on public.

The outdoor industry on tv is out of touch with the average hunter. Most hunters can't afford outfitters and even if they could, don't want a "guide". I would rather hunt public land and do it myself than pay thousands for a big buck that someone else did all the work for.
