A series of firsts at #SCPorts​ Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal! The first container, which is for BMW Group, arrived this morning at #HLT​ from Inland Port Greer.
Corinthian Brown of C&K Trucking picked the container up at the Norfolk Southern Corporation rail yard. After the truck was processed at the gate, rubber-tired gantry (RTG) operator Michael Blas placed it in the container yard.
“The arrival of the first container at the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal today is a momentous occasion, signifying that we are ready to begin operations and welcome ships in April. It gives our entire team and project partners tremendous pride to open the first container terminal in the U.S. since 2009. Phase One of the Leatherman Terminal will add 700,000 TEUs of throughput capacity and an additional berth to the Port of Charleston, providing capacity and fluidity at a time it is sorely needed on the East Coast amid global shipping disruptions.” - SC Ports President and CEO Jim Newsome
Phase One of #HLT​ has 5 ship-to-shore cranes that offer 169 feet of lift height and a reach of 228 feet. There are 25 hybrid RTG cranes in the container yard.
The Leatherman Terminal will have the capability to work a 20,000 TEU vessel.
