Shark Scrapper is scrapping a ceiling fan motor to determine if it makes more sense to sell as an electric motor OR take the time to get the #2 copper and sell as shred plus #2 copper.

I break down just about everything. But it's a piggy bank for me as I'm hoarding the more precious metals. GREAT VIDEO MY FRIEND!! This is a passionate subject for me. Peoples time/space play a HUGE factor in how an educated scrapper breaks down their metals. What works for one, may not work for another. :)

I’m not a scraper but was fascinated by this. That was a great idea to break it down to see if it is worth your time. I would just sell it as a copper motor and move on to the next. Thank you again for your service and for saving the earth every day!

Well.... there's another category of part-time scrappers who simply love copper and other metals and see stock-piling them as "money in the bank" like a bank account they can see and liquidate anytime they want. They also have the bonus of knowing someday it might sky-rocket in price. So it's kind of like a lower-version of people hoarding gold as a form of security and eliminating stress. While copper is not a precious metal I personally think it's stunningly more beautiful than gold, silver, platinum and bronze and of course it's way, way more accessible at a price of zero. Just another take - Great video.

No arguments. I also find copper very attractive. There are also artists and casters who go for the copper to have material to make things. Many reasons to scrap.

I have a 50 gallon drum full of CRT yokes I've collected over the past 2 years. I plan to harvest the copper this fall and will probably keep it until price goes up. Will let you know how many pounds of copper and shred I get when processed. Thanks for the great vids. My father was in the navy in wwii.

Clarke - CRT yokes are a great source. I have a bin full of them waiting for me to break them down. Waiting is a good call, prices aren't very good right now. But like all commodities, it will recover.

I have a pile of fans ready to break down. However, i scrap because I enjoy it AND the money gets put to work in the garden and beekeeping, thereby growing returns, literally. For that little per hour extra, right now it wouldn't be worth it for me to break the down. Good to know. You saved me hours of work and feelings of guilt for being 'lazy'. I greatly appreciate it.

I’m still going to break mine down, I only get 10 cents a pound for motors and that’s the best price within 3 hours of me. Versus breaking them up and getting over 3.00 per pound for copper and 7 cents a pound for shred. Even if i get a pound of copper out of each i’m getting give or take 3.50 for the the whole unit broken down versus 60 cents. That’s my take. Appreciate the video shark. Very informative and helpful.

The decision is very dependent on local prices and at $0.10/lbs for motors your decision makes sense. I find it very interesting that scrap prices can vary so much. Sometimes even within the same city. It pays to shop around and do the math. Keep scrapp'n!

I believe I got those at The Home Depot. The brand name is Irwin. But plenty of other brands out there make compound edge cutters.

It just depends on the person, if they have the space and the patience, me I use to stock pile them and slow days tore them down and then stockpiled the copper. Good little video, enjoyed 👍👍

Nice Way of getting the Copper out and Your Great Explanation as always ! Stripping most Scraps for its Non Ferrous Metals will in the long Run make You more Money as we have seen just Recently with Copper and Alu Prices ! As this was a year ago, something to add here in 2023, with the price of zinc rising, the metal parts that hold the blades, usually zinc, are worth saving in a bucket until you get it full.

It's definitely worth keeping if you're going to break down fans. My latest prices are $.045/lbs for cast Al (my yard doesn't separate Al and zinc) vs $0.35/lbs for motors. You also bring up an important issue - the need to keep an eye on prices.

I own an e-waste company and boy I have some tips. But when it comes to the copper, we hold it and eventually make bars/ingots and it substantially increases the value of your copper. Just an idea for you...

Thanks - I'm looking into this. So you're essentially a mint or foundry. Most yards will not buy, or pay lower prices, for bars because they don't know the composition. But clearly mints and foundries are treated differently.

@@sharkscrapper No we are not a foundry. We just do it and sell to locals and/or online IF we sell it. We have been holding on to them lately. The yards are going to pay you the same price regardless of what shape it's in. You are correct on they will pay lower prices because they feel it may be contaminated. Building relationships is important when you go to sell. You must be genuine when you are melting it down and don't throw some random piece of metal in there. Experts will find out. I feel you are a genuine person for sure especially given your military service. I can across your channel by listening to Nickk Nimmin over the weekend. When he said "scrapper" I went and looked you up. This channel is just geared towards sports cards which is a passion of mine. I don't put my business on social media so that I evade the people that try to ruin you because you said something they didn't like. I have put up how-to videos about it though. We only started doing this about 3 years ago. I got the idea from "bigstackD Casting" on youtube.

Prices vary. Copper here for #2 is 4.30 a pound. Motors 25 cents a pound. Irony aluminum is 20 cents a pound which U threw in shred bucket. Yes it does vary where U r !! As U know I do take apart!! Copper is copper L O L !!! Nicely done !!

Yeah, I should have done a better job discussing the irony/ali or "breakage" part. My yard won't take it as breakage, too much ferrous. But many yards do. I'm so used to putting it in shred I failed to mention that.

I'm stockpiling.I have a 55 gallon barrel nearly full of windings. Not sure what it weighs but I can't move it. I probably have another 3000 pounds of #2, a few hundred #1, a thousand pounds of wire, 1000 pounds of ACR, 500 pounds of brass, and a ton of compressors. Not even thinking of selling until #2 hits at least $5. I read industry analysis and I'm not going to sell until I start to see projections begin to meet future demand. I made my pickups today, sold 2200 pounds of shred at $155 a ton besides a couple hundred pounds of rotors and a few saleables and had time to burn so I broke down motors for an hour. It's that odd hour or 2 a day where this kind of work is profitable. Nothing else going on, I can enjoy a beer or 4 while working my copper mine. Scrapping slows way down here in the winter so I fill my time by adding value. Still have about 20 pool heaters to break down each good for 20 pounds of #2.

It's not always about "needing the money". It's also about time. Today I made my scheduled pickups and had time to spare. When it comes down to doing nothing or mining copper during those free couple of hours I'm going to make a few bucks. I have enough money to sit on my ass this winter while scrapping is slow but I'm not going to do it. I have tons of break down items to keep me busy this winter and my copper stash just gets bigger and bigger. It's like a savings account.

@@tinknal6449 I'd say you made Martha's point quite well and I hope folks read this thread. You're a great example of someone that has thought this through long term. You make enough during "the season" to meet your needs for the year. You continue to earn in the "off season" by mining some of what you accumulated before. This is a good model to follow if one's scrapping is seasonally/weather impacted.

I was surprised the difference was greater. Now some folks are getting very different pricing that changes the math. And of course, if you goal is to stack copper, well that's an entirely different calculus.

I haven't even been breaking my fans down at all - I think the motor route sounds best. I also understand that you should check the blade attachments to see if they are cast aluminum. Learn something new everyday. What other things have electric motors that makes sense to harvest before you dump it with the shred?

Hey Nacho - yes, I recommend you get the cast Al or pot metal arms that old the blades. I've shown that in other videos and can give you a link if desired. There are several common scrap items that have motors: washers, dryers, Razor scooters (battery operated ones), microwaves, and - of course - other types of fans. Dishwashers will have small motors BUT be careful as many yard will deduct weight because of all the plastic in the body of most dishwashers. Some have stainless steel bodies and make great scrap value.

I think copper is going to go up, but not significantly enough to justify the time spent on these. That being said, I still tear them down when time allows because both of my local yards have quit taking them as motors and only take them as shred. Not sure if that is because my local yards suck, or if that is an industry trend. my yards won't take aluminum motors/transformers except as shred. :-( Another great tutorial and looking forward to Shark Bytes on Wed.

I'd say that is NOT an industry trend. I have a few yards I work with and they all take copper bearing motors as motors and the aluminum motors as "breakage". I'm guessing your yard doesn't have a buyer for motors OR where they're located makes it not cost effective for them.

A good question. I had been breaking down the fans for the copper but decided I'd better do the analysis just to be sure. Now that I've done the analysis I am rethinking my strategy. While I want to stock pile copper for the future, I must be mindful of current cash flow and my time. With most of my time devoted to scrapping computers, I will start selling more motors as motors.

@@sharkscrapper I thought it would be something like that! I was a bit dissapointed with how little value increase there was, but I guess processing machines like the hammer mills of MBMM are very efficient, so the scrapyard can offer you pretty close to the actual value that's in the motor. I understand you need the time for other scrapping, I hope you find a different way to keep stockpiling copper.

That's a very good point that I should have addressed Lens Cap. My yard doesn't, saying it's mostly steel. But I'm sure there must be some that do which changes the math. Thank you

I use a vice on a steel plate inside old plastic tote and hit it with air hammer cut off one side flip over change to fork bit. I brake them down for the copper and save it for trips planning on going to Japan , Korea , Australia next year

Could you do a video what is the difference in ceiling fans, like a cheep one from Walmart and an expensive heavy ceiling fan? Are their guts the same?

Interesting - since I find the ceiling fans on the street I have no idea where they were sold or how much they cost. I can make educated guesses based on how fancy and sometimes the brand name. That said, I can't remember ever finding a ceiling fan with an aluminum motor, always copper wire. I'll keep an eye out for fans with obvious quality differences and see if it's worth a video.

in my land the Sweden ;) its better to take ALL kind the more you can work the better pay, becaus the law, we have company that are goverment rule to pick up, an redom scrapper as me if i dont have an company, i do get more for my job than dont, and i have my seller word on it, steel/shreed dont give much if you dont have than an ton, so for me Micro scrapping are the best great video

@@sharkscrapper But if i had to make the choice of moving fast at my age i would go for ease of selling on if I was looking at a pile of stuff each day. so sell as is and if i can sell it to someone messing around play generators had ask a fiver for it

I liked this video but it's going to cost me seeing it. I will need that hammer then those cutters and the gas to go get them and time as well but I can see the end result will make it easier on me 😆

Break down my yard 20 cents lb motor and they have to see the copper wire so I have to half break down any way.

Plus I believe copper is going to sky rocket in the next 5 years so if you don’t need to live I say stack it as high as the hills 👊🏻

Motors for $0.10/lbs?! That's terrible. What is #2 copper there? Hopefully much better. I agree that there's a LOT of head space for copper in the future and if you don't need the cash - stack it.

Prep them for scrapping. Stockpile and get them ready to be scrapped or if the motor price goes up be ready to cash in. I think fan motors are too small to justify the effort put in. Especially wear and tear on the hands . Bigger motors that are copper should be stripped. It's all about efficiency and gaining profit. The amount of copper yielded in the fan motors isn't big enough. My 2 cents.

For a lousy 15 minutes u can get an extra 1 to 2 dollars per fan .

Well, as I showed - in my case it's 10 mins to get $0.38, not a dollar or two. But it is so dependent on your local prices.

Trust me, I've been there. Take a look at some of my older videos when I was working out of my garage. OMG, there were times when I had a veritable wall of scrap waiting to fall on me.

It's very useful - look for Estwing rock pick or geologic hammers. No I'm not an affiliate, but now that I've said it - that might be an interesting idea?

I break stuff down for stress relief. Better to make $2.28/hr than scream at kids for no reason or get an aneurysm.

When you cut the end of the shaft you cheated yourself the ability to remove the cast aluminum bracket. I have done over fifty of these motors fyi

I've lost track of how many of these I've done over the years. I've just gotten tired of wrestling with that bolt and just cut them off now. Not enough hours in the day for me to go after every little piece. But back when I was a hobbyist, boy howdy the lengths I'd go through cleaning scrap.
