Several of you are excited to sew some string blocks with me. Here is the introductory video that gives you a bit of information of some of the supplies you may need in order to make string blocks. As we sew our blocks some of us might come up with some new little tips and tricks to streamline our sewing. Grab your scraps and get them pressed and ready to sew and we'll start making blocks next week!!

Very good idea to set a timer when on Pinterest. I too get lost on there. Sometimes when I am lost for an idea for what ever craft I may be working on I will bring up Pinterest. Then the day is used up looking at the food, gardening, multiple crafting ideas, etc. Great video as always.

Thanks for the tips. I use phone books as well....I love making string blocks from my scraps, in fact, I spent the month of Feb sewing close to 300 10" string blocks... Please comment below if your or any of your viewers know of a charity that could use some of my blocks...Time stamp 18:29 looks like sashing...Love it!

Awesome!! That’s a ton of blocks. I think your phone books are much larger than mine. I know many Project Linus groups will accept blocks. You can check the Project Linus website to see if there is a group near you. Then you can contact them to see if they accept the blocks. If they don’t please let me know and I’ll check with a couple of my Talk To Me Tuesday Ladies and see if they would like them. 300 blocks can keep several kids warm. When I was editing the video I was thinking the same thing. That would be fun sashing.

Fun! I'm working on a string quilt now using all my green scraps with a central blue strip. I am using phone book pages and am not having any problem with the ink rubbing off on fabric or my hands. Good idea to use old gift wrap. I probably have more than I can ever use. Thanks for the inspiration, Robin. 😃

That’s great to hear. Thanks! My phone book just looks cheaply printed and I was a bit worried. I did receive a tip that if you iron your newspaper It sets the ink and It won’t run. I thought that was smart. I hope you can share your quilt when it’s all stitched together. Sounds beautiful. I like seeing all the different greens.

I use old phone books for scrap quilting. The ink does not bleed like newspapers (probably because they are meant to be used for longer periods of time than daily newspapers. I take mine to Staples or Home Depot and for a dollar or two they will make two cuts - one to cut off the spine and one to cut off the bottom to square it up, I've found that the small phone books that are being used now can make up to an 8 1/2" square. I've also used sales catalogs the same way.

Great information! I’ve never used phone books before so those are helpful tips. Having someone cut the spine off would be so helpful.

Susan Pepper Nice idea. I open phone books to about middle-ish and run an Xacto or rotary cutter down the center. Effective. I always square up after sewing so I let my papers be “approximate. Lol.

Good to see you using fabric foundations; I used an 'as new' sheet from the charity shop. I'm just about ready to trim my 30 blocks to 9.5" and then start sewing them all together tomorrow. I used my design wall/floor to sort them into some sort of 'pattern'. Hope you have a nice weekend :)

Alright, now you've gone and done it Robin! I was going thru my crumb block basket and discovered I had small pile of wof strips left over from some cmas quilts. ( and why they're in w the crumb blocks? I have a mischevious leprechan!) And then you start your string block series less than 12hrs later..... now I'm going to have to make a baby quilt w string blocks! See how you just use up all my scraps for me? 😉🤣 Thanks for the tips on what types of paper to use for foundation!! I have been using computer paper and sometimes even with small stitches, it stretches my blocks as I remove it. I have TONS of wrapping paper!

Wonderful!! I like string quilts made from Christmas fabric. I have one that needs quilting. Many of us have rolls of wrapping paper that we no longer like or It was for a random occasion. May as well use them up. Since we are sewing with scraps/leftovers It fits in perfectly.

Bonnie Hunter recommends letting the phone books age for 3 years. I found the large sheets of paper they use in grocery stores near the doughnuts for you to get your own bakery goods. Sams and probably Costco carries them. They are called something like sandwhich wrap and come in 2 sizes. I get the bigger ones which were 12 x10 I think. They tear easily off your completed block. I even use them for paper piecing of simple designs by stitching the design lines with a large, unthreaded needle. You can stack multiple sheets together for this. I will then use tv time to pencil mark any numbers or color names on the sheets. YOU can also buy scrap lots of quilting fabric on eBay. As far as Pinterest goes - I ended up making separate boards for different kinds of quilts - baby, scrappy, applique, paper pieced etc. Otherwise, you would never be able to find the ones you are just sure you pinned. My name on Pinterest in Rosmunda Carter. Knitting note - I am doing I-cord bind off on a shawl as I watched your video. Have you tried that yet? It gives a nice rolled edge look and no uneven tension on your bind off stitches. Like that you are doing this series. It's a great way to use all your fabrics. Nothing is ugly if it's cut small enough - wisdom from Bonnie Hunter.

I love Bonnie Hunter. Can you imagine trying to explain to someone that you are letting your phone book age?? Using the sandwich paper is really smart. I sub boards on pinterest now too. When I first started pinning things I went too broad and like you said I couldn't easily find what I needed. I have done an i-cord bind off a time or two. Thanks!!

If you dry iron newspapers with a very hot iron, it will fix the ink to the paper. I am guessing that would work for the telephone book pages.

Paper piecing can you use clothing patterns
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts Жыл бұрын
Do you mean use old clothing patterns to sew your scraps onto? Yes you can. The tissue paper patterns might be a bit difficult. Only because they tear so easily. I have seen some quilters sew on tissue paper so It can be done. When you sew fabric onto paper you want to use a thin paper. While I have used printer paper in the past it’s actually better if your paper is thinner than printer paper. Thicker paper is harder to remove and It can leave loose stitches behind.

Is there a reason you don’t sew these blocks vertically?
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 жыл бұрын
You totally can but they look cool vertical. 😉. I’ve seen them sewn both ways but if you were to sew a 6.5” block vertically you could easily do that without the foundation paper. Now if you wanted them to be a bit wonky and vertically then I would use foundation paper. That way you have a general idea of the finished square that you are going for.

@@rsislandcrafts I am in the process of making a king size string quilt but I am using old white sheeting, I am lazy I do not want to pull all that paper off. Yes I know to really shorten my stitch length to make that easier but still not into the extra works
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 жыл бұрын
Jim Morgan I totally get that. No matter how easy the paper is to remove you still need to take the time to remove all those pieces of paper. I’ve made a couple quilts using fabric foundations but I don’t like the feel or weight of the extra fabric. Best part about quilting is that we can each make It our own. Thanks!
@jimmorgan6819
@jimmorgan6819 5 жыл бұрын
@@rsislandcrafts so very true, I was given a whole load of scraps and strips, the fabric is very light weight and some very nice but sheer so that is also one reason I use the OLD thin sheeting. Though, as you said to each his own in how we do the foundation piecing and for that I am thankfull

Hey Robin, is there a good size foundation to start with? Bigger vs smaller? This is going to feel weird for me I just know it!
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you’re making and you’re personal choice. I tend to make 6.5” blocks. I don’t need long strings of fabric and it’s a nice size for tote bags or small quilts. It’s also the size I can get out of a piece of 8.5” x 11” lined school paper. If you’re making a king size quilt than I recommend 12.5” blocks. Of course you’ll need longer strings. They also feel like they take longer to make but you need less so It balances out. I have a 9.5” square ruler so sometimes I’ll make that size. I know that’s not a real answer but I hope It helps. Did you make crumb blocks with me last year? If so, what size did you make? Or, what size quilt block do you tend to make? Maybe go with that size. I like to mix and match blocks so a 6.5” block can get mixed in with 12.5” blocks. Some things just take a little bit to get used to. You may find out that you love string blocks or you might not like them at all. At least you’ll have stepped out of your comfort zone at least for a few blocks.
@clairepereira8592
@clairepereira8592 5 жыл бұрын
@@rsislandcrafts yeahh... out of my comfort zone is right! But I want to try. I did one crumb block last year, took one look at it and went, yuck!! Then I pitched it.😆😆 maybe I will stick with a bit smaller .. I can make a sewing machine cover. I have a phone book can cut 7 1/2 inch square paper.. then square up after. It's sort of a plan.😂
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 5 жыл бұрын
I think a string block sewing machine cover is a great idea. You can narrow it down to just a couple of colors and It will look amazing and if you don’t like them you can make them the inside of the cover or toss them with the crumb block 😉
