Wrap em up! Come with us as we pickup my new Northwest 25D shovels and haul them to the antique show and National Pike Steam Gas and Horse Association. I get to learn the ropes of Northwest ownership and everything that is backwards!

Those are awesome - I imagine the gentleman that looked after them for the last 50 years is sad to see them go. You can tell he took great pride in them. Glad you were able to give them good homes and they aren't rotting away in a bush somewhere.

Amazing that the shovels were still being used and had been so well cared for throughout their lives by a dedicated mechanic/engineer. I bet you couldn't believe it when you found them, straight start - no jump pack action certainly didn't have Matt's name on them! Did they, Thanks Sam & Big John

Just think about it, at one time, each piece of ALL that equipment was the newest, upgrade of its time ! Cables then hydraulics !! They needed both hands AND both feet to operate alot of that stuff... compared to now(two hands, legs crossed[relaxed]) oh, and they added heat(not just how warm the motor got inside the body with operator ) and A.C !!

Those machines with the Murphy diesel were fairly comfortable to run in the summer, as the fan drew air from the house and pushed it out through the side, and by opening or closing the doors for airflow, kept a good breeze going by you.
@russellsmith3825

I had a 1952 model 25 dragline crane, still had the Murphy diesel, biggest 4 cylinder I've ever seen, 4 inches longer than an 855 Cummins, but very easy on diesel. Folks think those old machines are made of iron, the truth is they are really made out of grease, the iron is just there to hold it all in place. For the open gears for the swing and travel, i was told by the old timer at the Northwest factory so had been there since the 50s to use "gear shield extra heavy" by lubriplate, it comes in caulking tubes, and it is extra sticky to stay in place.

I guess I’m truly old, because I remember shovels like those actually working on construction jobs. I’d stand there forever watching them. I didn’t realize you could buy one in the 70’s. Seems everything went to hydraulics overnight, about the late 60’s. The only cable machine I ever ran was a Bucyrus Erie dragline. It was on a barge and used for dredging and setting pilings for a marina.

I find it so refreshing to see young guys like you actually get into saving these old machines, and have the interest in them and can run them as well. God bless you both, and Matt as well for saving and repairing the old machines and equiptment and using them, givening them more and new life..Nohting like watching two guys playing in the dirt!! Awesome!

You guys probably already know this, but having run a couple Unit magnet cranes and an American 4120, we always kept the drive sprockets to the rear when traveling. If the tracks are even slightly to loose, they will come off easily with the drive sprockets forward. Keeping the drive tension to the bottom of the tracks makes all the difference. Awesome vid, glad I found it. Brought back memories

Years ago I watched an old guy (everyone was old I was 8 or 9) dig out the side of a hill with one. That ground was as smooth as if it had been graded. He also dug a trench for a gas main that was smooth as glass. His name was Hubert and had been a Sea Bee during WWII. That man could make any machine he operated an extension of his hands. Thanks for saving these old machines. Marion Power Shovel was another manufacturer. Cheers Terry

Fun video, Sam. Loved it. Thanks for sharing. It was good to see you, Big John, Geno, and Matt working together again, sort of like a "super-collab" video. 🙂 And now for something completely different. . . 😏 The structure of the video was unusual for a Scrappy Industries video, though. It reminded me of watching an episode of the Twilight Zone as a kid. . . a bit surreal. 😵‍💫 In this video, you introduced the topic, went somewhere, loaded up some equipment, took it somewhere, and demonstrated it working. • There was no need to clear trees, or dig and pull the equipment out of the mud. In fact I didn't see any mud around the equipment. The cable shovels were sitting on a large, mud-free, crushed brick surface. Weird. • I didn't see any cans of ether or jump packs being used, since the engines started up easily. And there was no need to troubleshoot why an engine was losing prime, or how "all that diesel fuel" got into the oil pan. Between yours and Diesel Creek's videos, I didn't realize that 50-year old diesels could be started without ether and a jump pack. • No onsite maintenance needed to be done to get the running gear unlocked and functioning so that the equipment could move. But that was probably just a side effect of having NOT sunk into the mud over the last 20 years. • And, except for Geno's cable shovel slipping sideways a few inches while loading after the equipment demonstration - a minor issue addressed by the judicious application of bulldozer (thanks Matt) - there appeared to be no significant struggles or mishaps during the entire video. This was very odd indeed. Everything just. . .worked. Many thanks to Mr. Dan for maintaining and taking care of the cable shovels all these years. Well done. 👍

Great find on those two machines. I love how you guys are finding this stuff and preserving it . Would love to come down to see your club grounds sometime . Not as much of that type of thing on the other side of the lake from you guys up in Canada . But we still have some . I’ve always wanted to to find an old cable machine for show . My dad had a Borthwest 25 D dragline and a Bucyrus Erie 30B draglines ne when I was a kid . I want to find something like that maybe eventually . I still have my 89 Mack Superliner E9 powered of coarse. I only use it for my vintage truck shows that we are starting to get into pretty heavy up here . A nice crane or shovel project would be a nice addition to my collection . Maybe someday . I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.
