This is the first episode of a new series in which I show how I use the open source application, Inkscape, to design all of the scratch built buildings on Chandwell. I design in Inkscape and build from card in N Scale. This episode introduces Inkscape and shows how I built the foundation of an up-hill road that goes under the skew arch on the card built curved N Gauge viaduct.

At last a tutorial that doesn’t assume any prior knowledge. I’ve encountered so many ‘beginner’ tutorials which get so far and then suddenly tell you ‘now do x,y,z’ without explaining how to do x,y,z. Thank you so much.

Hi Michael. I revisited this vidoe because I need to start using InkScape and I am so pleased with your attention to detail. I made notes (I'm old... ) and I was able to follow everything you said. You packed an awful lot of information into a short space of time. I'm going to run through your other InkScape Tutorials. They are superb and thanks again for taking the trouble to produce them. I know you are always asking if they are welcome and for me they are spot on, being linked as they are to railway modelling... Muchos Michael. Its a pity we can't like a video more than once... 🤣😂🤣

Thank you so much Peter. The timing is good. I have a bit of Inkscape in tomorrow's video. I am still trying to decide the best approach for a series of (very) short Inkscape videos that will help as a learning path for newbies interested in the very basics up to the completion of a simple building. Maybe with downloadable files as we go. If you have any suggestions/ideas, or anything along those lines, please drop me a line at hello@chandwell.uk

Since you asked! :) I find the snapping can 'feel' buggy, especially when dragging the resize handles of rectangles... they can suddenly jump to bizarre locations and be impossible to resize without turning snapping off. I've never worked out if it's my misunderstanding of how it's meant to work, or if it is buggy. And sometimes, definitely clicking on one thing will select the thing beside it. I assume it's when you're zoomed out, it's making the best guess as to what you are probably clicking on, but when it gets it wrong it can be a pain. But still.. these are definitely not gripes... I love the software!

Got here having after downloading Inkscape. What a great way to learn a programme - watching a master craftsman at work (I've now seen a few of your videos along with my wife). I'll use it for designing cabinets that I'll make from mdf, and heavy-duty planters from 50mm by 200mm - considerably less precision than you work to as you deal in tenths of a millimetre while a whole millimetre is good enough for my cabinets

Very interesting Michael and you are very good at it. But I have to say it makes a old man feel a lot older lol. Not in a month of Sundays would I be able to operate that system as you do, totally different generation. Please bear in mind computers, mobile phones did not exist in my time, tv's were black and white with two channels. Now I am not saying I could not learn, but life is too short at my age so I will leave it to you youngsters. Totally amazed how you take it in your stride and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Thank you Chris - and not only for calling me a "youngster" at almost 45! Inkscape is not fr everyone, of course, but I am pleased you found it interesting. I've worked with IT for my whole life - the BBC Basic computers were just coming into schools when I was there. One computer shared amongst the whole school, wheeled about on a trolley. I already see my children learning to code at the age of 7, and marvel at the speed they pick it up. I already do feel the twinge of being left behind in my own time, as we all do, I expect.

Hi Alan, like you I am 64 but to be honest I am finding it difficult to spend any time up in the loft on the layout let alone do a computer course, maybe when I retire, that's if the government let me. I have just found your very impressive videos of your equally impressive constructions. I am toying with the idea of making some dioramas in 1/72nd scale, but being familiar with Sketchup, I intend to use that for designing and texturing my buildings as it has the advantage of virtually constructing in 3d, then flattening out planes and adding tabs. I think you might have found your roof constructions simpler using this method. Your level of detail is exquisite.
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tim. I have used Sketchup from time to time. It’s a wonderful app and so easy to use. I tend to think in 2D rather than 3D believe it or not, and find Inkscape preferable most of the time. Can Sketchup “unroll” a curved piece of roof into what would need to be a flat shape when printed? Michael
@timhole5354
@timhole5354 2 жыл бұрын
@@Chandwell Hi Michael, the big advantage of Sketchup, in my view, is the ability to work in full size, using real world dimensions if reproducing an actual structure. This can then be textured and scaled down to your desired scale. There is not the ability to "unroll" a curved structure in the free version of Sketchup but I am positive that this is possible using one of the many extensions available through Sketchucation, mostly free of charge. As a retired joiner, I have used Sketchup for many years, in particular for staircases, enabling an accurate 3 dimensional model to be constructed, allowing precise dimensions to be ascertained in 3d space. My first project is to make a card model of my own home, to test methods of construction, which your videos have helped with enormously. One other huge advantage, especially at smaller scales, is to be able to project textures (photos) of real life buildings onto your model, or even construct from photos using the Match Photo feature. Keep up the good work. Tim

Thank you so much for this - I do believe you are the only person to post a video on using Inkscape for model making and I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the series, since the potential of this program for scratchbuilding is huge. I personally have a problem with importing textures into outlines like building walls and having them import at the correct scale without enlarging - perhaps a topic for later in the series. A nice idea to use the Bezier Tool for the compound shape, too. A good start all round and with your help, I might finally get to grips with this program and put it to a useful purpose Thanks again.
@Chandwell

Thank you Paul. I certainly can show some approaches to getting the textures assigned to outlines in such a way that they maintain their position and scale within the object and without leeching out - I will add this to my list of future episode ideas.

One thing, and this may be that I was working on a Mac and not a PC, but when I first opened the software it didn't have all the dialogues on the right of the screen (the tool bar with icons was there). I found the align dialogue by the tried and tested method of click every icon and hope what you want appears. If you have done something to optimise your workspace it would interesting to know what that is. Thanks again. Stephen

I was using version 0.9.something and only just upgraded to version 1 just before the video, and it opened like that, which was a bit different from the previous version. Your “click everything till it works” approach qualifies you as a professional right off the bat though! I’ll add something to the next vid about screen setup. I’m thinking the next tutorial will be about constructing arches. I’ve had a LOT of practice with that!

Just going through your Inkscape tutorials now and you explain most things very clearly. Like Stephen before, I needed to click a few icons to get the righthand menu to show (though on my Mac the items weren't written out, just icons themselves). Also, at the end of the video when you showed the road mockup in place, there were a lot of extra cardboard bits sandwiched in between the ones that were printed out. Just so I understand fully, those bits were added just to bulk up the road, correct? Their actual dimensions aren't important except that they be below the level of the roadway? Thank you for a very clear presentation on using this software.

Thank you for your comment and I am please that you found it useful. You have interpreted the thing at the end correctly - I just packed the slices of curved road bed with some rectangles of card to pad out the width. 👍

Have just downloaded Inkscape after watching your tutorial and wonder if it could be used to draw the control panel layout for my new build. I model in oo gauge but I have watched many of your videos and find them very interesting and informative, keep up the good work.

Enjoyed this video on Inkscape, never heard of it before. Would have liked to have seen you printing it out and assembling the cutouts into the finished product. Do you have any problems printing on card? Which printer do you use? Thanks for sharing.

I'm starting to think this is the future of custom miniatures for model railroading. I've been searching for specific size, shape, and style buildings and never find what I need and I might just start doing this as it seems easier. Though how is it cost wise?
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely have so many choices when you make the buildings yourself. There are many examples on my channel. I just finished a five-month build of an enormous hotel and it cost very little. The software is free and you can get free textures. Printer ink is the biggest outlay. Thanks for watching! Michael

Thanks for this. I'm computer illiterate. "If you had a million monkeys typing on a million typewriters, eventually you would end up with the complete works of William Shakespeare". I am one of those monkeys. This was very straight forward and very well explained, that even a monkey like me understands. I'm going to download inkscape and... you guessed it... "monkey around" with it a bit. Thanks for the explanations and no, not a waste of your time. Greatly appreciated :DWould I be correct in assuming that instead of doing this on a blank screen, you would do it on a cobble stone for instance to get the cobble stone effect?

This made me chuckle Ken! Thank you for your comment. I have done some other videos about adding textures (eg cobblestones) to buildings, so have a look out for those. All the best and thanks for watching! -Michael

Fantastic video.....just what i needed to help decide if i am going to give it go!!! 2 questions.. Do you stick the whole page to the card then cut out or do you cut round each one leaving a gap and stick to the card? and What thickness of card do you use? and where do you get it from? I purchased some 300GSM from hobbycraft but not sure its thick enough Thanks Dave
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. Yes, I stick the whole page to card, or if I;m only printing a few components, I stick a rectangular slice to card, i.e. just one horizontal cut across the portrait-orientation A4 sheet. This is because if you cut around parts, especially skinny ones, then you risk the part bending in the process. I use a wallpaper seam roller to really make sure it's all stuck down. I use cereal packet, 0.5mm greyboard, 1mm greyboard, and sometimes, 2mm greyboard. Cereal packet is great for mock-ups and small detail, but its thickness varies by brand so you can't do work that requires fine exact measurements. The greyboard I buy in bulk from eBay and works out at 6 pence a sheet for 0.5mm and 13 pence a sheet for the 1mm. If you watch the Hotel build series, I think Episode 3 or 4 shows details of this. Happy building! Let me know how you get on! :) Michael

On the Fill palette just under the colour and next to the opacity and blue sliders is a drop down with all the different blend modes. You have similar on the Layer palette if you want to affect everything on the layer. Hope this helps! Michael

very nice viaduct reminded me of the one leaving sheffield heading to meadowhall as its built on a viaduct over roads and the canal and river -- www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.39017,-1.4494661,3a,90y,111.78h,97.62t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sUovnG5dycd_B_BTHYNMZsQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Thanks for your kind words, Paul. Funny you should mention that viaduct as I spent an afternoon walking all around that part of Sheffield whilst researching bridges and the river. The iron arch bridge, although based on one in Dewsbury, is very similar to that exact one you mention. I took a lot of photos of the underside of that bridge. The Chandwell river is going to be heavily influenced by the river that runs beside that viaduct in Sheffield, and which curves around between big industrial buildings, with the path on one side. There's also a weir there, and I am in two minds whether to model it or not.
